Ideally, nothing should be embraced by a consumer firmly, nothing should command a commitment forever, no needs should ever be seen as fully satisfied, no desires considered ultimate … It is the volatility, the in-built temporariness of all engagement that counts; it counts more than the engagement itself, which should not outlast the time necessary for consuming the object of desire… To increase their capacity for consumption, consumers must never be given rest. They need to be constantly exposed to new temptations in order to be kept in a state of constantly seething, never wilting expectation and, indeed, in a state of suspicion and disaffection. The baits commanding them to shift attention need to confirm such suspicion while offering a way out of disaffection: ‘You reckon you’ve seen it all? You ain’t seen nothing yet!
