The pressure of countless exams, unavoidable late nights studying, working at the hospital and everything that seemed to be happening in Athos and to the people around her had Aurora reeling. The overwhelming pressure to be and do her best was starting to get to her and it didn’t help that the day had been particularly hard with her mentor unexplainably being frustrated with her all afternoon and evening.
As she walked home and heard the ruffling of leaves near her, Aurora turned and hoped to God it wasn’t trouble. Her restraint and patience was at it’s minimum and any possible assailant seemed was likely to be knifed by the small Saint. Fortunately, it was just a small dog that Aurora recognized. Curious and in no hurry to get home, she followed Darius’ little friend down the path to the destroyed observatory.
“Flipper,” she called out softly, hoping to get the dog’s attention but it scurried away into the building so she had no choice but to follow. When Flipper stopped in the middle of the telescope room and turned to wag his tail at her, Aurora couldn’t help but smile lightly and bend down. It ran over to be pet as soon as she did. The healer scratched behind the little dog’s ear and ruffled the fur on his head. “... It’s good to see you too, buddy,” she whispered with a sad smile.
Just as soon as she did, Aurora heard footsteps from another one of the empty rooms and turned. Tired and in no mood to get up and be wary of any strangers roaming the observatory at this hour, Aurora just kept herself down and squinted a little as she watched the shadow approach.

Aurora was studying in a quiet household, burying her face in an enormous textbook only a last year medical student would be torturing themselves with. It was only when Minos started squawking and flapping excitedly in the other room that she looked up in time to hear a knock on her door.
Grateful for the distraction, the Saint quickly tried to fix her hair that she’d messed up by continuously running her hands through it in frustration and got up from her desk. Minos quieted down when he saw her walking into the living room and rushing to the door.
But caution was a habit for the daughter of a mob boss. So, first, Aurora looked through the peephole to see who it was. She hadn’t expected the visit. But it was both surprising and weirdly exciting to see Darius’ familiar frame on the other side of the door. She huffed in amusement and opened it all the way to smile lightly at him. “Darius?” Her head tilted inquisitively. “What’s up?”

Unlike bars in Omerta, Athosian bars had a bit more... calm. Of course, that was all relative. Aurora entered the Holy Spirit Bar and knew that if it had been later in the night the place would start getting packed with drunk partiers letting loose. Athosians could be crazy if they wanted to be. Yet, since it was still relatively early for a bar, Aurora was content to stay for a little while to meet Darius somewhere she knew he’d feel comfortable - an environment familiar to the two of them.
Despite how much she’d convinced herself this was a good test of how far she’d come, the prospect of seeing Darius was still making her a little nervous. This was especially true since part of her wondered if she’d seen him where Emilia had been hurt in Inferno. So Aurora found herself dreading catching his eye as she looked around. Though, that was until she actually did. Despite herself, a small smile curled at her lips when she saw her old friend and she made her way over with a show of confidence that she didn’t completely feel. “Darius... Glad you made it.”

Aurora had a way with being quiet and stealthy, it was something she’d perfected over the years as she tried to avoid her brother or listen in on her dad’s meetings and phone calls. That morning, she’d been passing her Giacomo’s office to overheard her father using his stressed voice on the phone, meaning something was worrying him. Interesting. She’d stopped by his door to listen in, hearing about an important drug deal with some people from Zair. It was one of the biggest deals that month but apparently a rival mob was intent on interrupting it. So, of course, Giacomo seemed to have appointed his favorite dealer to work it just in case things went south.
But he had no idea his daughter had immediately made the decision to crash the party as soon as she heard Darius was going to be involved in the deal. There was no way Aurora was letting him go on something potentially dangerous without her, especially since it sounded potentially fun. And Darius would definitely need her to have his back. The Banshee didn’t even consider the fact she’d already made plans to meet with her new boyfriend, Silas - a good looking son of one of Giacomo’s employees who had finally convinced her to go on a date with him 2 weeks ago. They’d been on a couple dates since then. Now, she was trying to actually be a girlfriend for once. Obviously that wasn’t working out.
So, after gathering all the necessary information she needed on the deal, Aurora showed up to the meeting point a minute before they had to leave and flashed the group a smirk. “Hey boys,” she said in a sing-song voice, looking around at them, her eyes pausing on Darius. Then she waved and winked over at the only other woman present. “Elena.” The woman took the cigarette out of her mouth and winked back. One of Giacomo’s men groaned. “What the fuck. What’s the boss’ little princess doing here?” Aurora walked over to him, stepping on his foot with her high heel and making him yelp in sudden pain. “Shut the fuck up, Ross.” She said happily before making her way over to Darius. “Room for one more?”
Nosemaphobia: Your muse is ill, and mine is taking care of them.
A bad chemical mix was bound to get him one day. Darius experimented far too much for Aurora’s liking and she wasn’t surprised the day he came to see her and he looked half dead with a fever. Taking the day off from work, she saw to it that he’d be taken care of despite his complaints. He could hardly walk so it was easier than usual to get him to obey her.
The high fever was starting to worry her. Aurora ended up skipping lunch to try and bring it down with a cold cloth to Darius forehead, some medication and an herbal remedy her mother would make her as a child. But no matter how bad his condition got, Darius still seemed to keep up that cocky nature of his. She smiled softly as he teased her for looking more tired than him. “… Shut up,” Aurora said in a low voice, smile ever present. “You’re the one who looks like a zombie.”
Amnesiphobia: Your muse has forgotten mine, and mine is trying to make yours remember.
Aurora didn’t know how long the amnesia would last… or if it would go away. Head traumas were a tricky thing. But she couldn’t lose hope. She spent every minute she could helping Darius at the hospital before he’d be discharged and go back outside to a harsh, confusing world. He was a blank slate now, so vulnerable and lost. While it broke her heart to see Darius like this and know he didn’t recognize her, there was something different in his eyes she could appreciate.
She saw no reluctance to express himself. She saw genuine reactions and a man who didn’t remember all he’d done in his life. All the violence and agony was wiped away too. God, how she wondered what was best for him at this point. That he begin anew? Or that he get himself back. Trying not to be selfish, she still had no idea what would be the best for him. And yet she still tried to get him to remember.
“… You, um…” Aurora smiled wistfully across the table from him. “You used to call me blackbird. Back in Omerta, we were-” Smile turned into a bit of a grin. “We were getting high in the forest and there was a red-winged blackbird singing that I loved. And he came down from his branch just absolutely amazing me because I was so high. You thought it was really funny at the time so the name for me stuck.” She explained, smile fading as she continued. Aurora knew he had no idea what she was talking about. Eventually, her gaze fell and she couldn’t hide the turmoil in her mind.

It was a quiet moment; it was a rare and precious moment where the two had just come out of something they might not have made out of alive. But they did. And even bloody and bruised, Darius looked more stunning than ever before. And it wasn’t just his face - it was something in the way he looked at her now. It was something she’d never seen from him - something she’d never seen from anyone. No one had ever looked at her the way he did then, faces close and foreheads having touched just a moment ago.
Her heart beat like a stampede of horses. Nothing existed except the two of them there, in the quiet and calm from the aftermath of a storm. In that moment, she was drowning in the ocean blue of his eyes and lost in the soft feeling of his hand intertwined with hers. It was in that moment, Aurora loved him more than anyone.

The girls were laughing about something Zara had said but Aurora had long since left the conversation when Darius whispered something to her from the seat beside her. She smiled at him and answered, beginning a quiet conversation between the two despite the fact they were all eating dinner together.
It was something he said that made her laugh almost breathlessly, looking away and inclining her head to try and control herself. One of the Banshees in front of her snapped a photo of the two with their phone camera, finally making Aurora’s laughter lessen to chuckling. She complained to her friend and asked to see the photo. But her complaints died away as softly as her laughter had when Aurora felt Darius’ leg brush up against hers and stay there. It was a tender gesture, one that made her looked up at him again and smile. But then she tried to look away quickly before her friends noticed. Nonetheless, her heel quietly came up beside his to mimic the affection gesture of closeness.

They were staring at each other in silence for far too long to pretend the coming moment wasn’t something they both wanted. So Aurora didn’t stop Darius as he leaned closer. Her eyes closed, letting the moment come - letting the tension break. She held her breath, feeling Darius’ lips brush against her neck and his hand come up to rest against her waist.
Her body tingled with excitement as his gentle lips became teeth, soft and teasing. As his lips trailed down her skin, she let go of the breath she was holding in with a shaky sigh. Aurora gave in completely. Her hands cupped his face and brought Darius’ lips to hers, desperate and eager for them to meet the way they had so often so many years ago. And when she kissed him, it felt like coming home.

Relaxing in the bathtub was soothing after a long day of dealing with her busy father and vexing brother. And it was especially soothing after a very energetic hour with Darius in her bed. Now, Aurora sunk into the hot water and closed her eyes, ignoring the sound of the door open. “Darius… I need a break,” she murmured, a small grin curling at her lips.
But she heard him walk over anyway and looked up in time to see him come anyway. But thankfully Darius didn’t look hungry for more… He looked just as tired and lazy as she did. So Aurora moved a bit in the tub and let him sit behind her. She moved to lean back and relax against him but he stopped the impulse as soon as she felt his hand trail slowly down her wet back with a small towel. She closed her eyes, letting him stroke her more in affection then to help clean her. Nonetheless, she felt more at ease now than she had a moment before.
They still weren’t back. Oh my God, they still weren’t back. Aurora paced the length of the Manor’s garden, trying to calm herself down but nothing could slow down the wild thumping of her heart as her mind ran through every scenario of what could have happened. What if they’d all been captured? Killed? Tortured? She’d left her father dialing a bunch of numbers on his phone as he attempted to contact anyone who might know what happened to the group of men that had gone out for that job.
Darius had been one of them. And the last thing she said to him before he left on that dangerous job was how infuriating he could be after he’d upset her. Now all she could think was that was probably the last impression Darius have of her if he never came back. She’d never told him how she really felt. But she couldn’t think about that- she had to remain strong and composed. It wasn’t over yet. Darius was alive, he had to be. If he was dead, she would know. She just would. Aurora was too on edge to cry and just paced, trying not to run back inside and scream at her dad in frustration and worry for not getting any news.
But a minute or two afterwards, she saw a figure approach from the southside entrance to the gardens. In complete shock, she just stood there as he approached and she took in his features. Her shoulders slowly slumped in relief as Darius stopped right in front of her. He said something - but she didn’t register it. Aurora just ran and threw herself at him, embracing him and taking in the familiar scent of smoke and leather. He was okay. Oh my God, he was okay.
I’m not mad. I love you and, oh my God, I was so afraid you weren’t going to come back. I’m so sorry. Those were the words that echoed in her mind, but she couldn’t bring herself to say them. Aurora just let her actions express them for her as she buried her face in the crook of his neck and held him tighter.
10. things you said that i wasn’t meant to hear (past)
Aurora was storm out after arguing with her brother, turning to make her way to the door before she paused. The words she hadn’t said were screaming inside her head so loudly she spun back around to face Vittorio. Little did she know Darius had arrived early. He had been prepared to knock on the door before he heard her yelling and stopped to listen.
“You know what? You can complain alllll the fuck you want, Tori, because guess what? … I get it.” The last sentence was breathed out in a tone of dangerous calm. It slowly escalated once more. “You’re fucking jealous. You’ve ALWAYS been jealous.” Aurora was seething in rage now, shouting at her older brother thinking they were the only two besides staff in the house. “You just can’t fucking stand it- that your sister is seeing someone SO much better than you. And you know it. Someone who can actually get shit done that dad wants without messing up because of stupid, reckless mistakes. Someone who can fight his way out of anything and be still be charming and gentle towards the people he cares about when you can’t even do EITHER. You’re a failure I’m DONE paying the price for it.” Tears threatened to spill from her eyes in her fit of rage.
“You don’t own me. I’m your SISTER, not your little punching bag for when you’re upset you’re still not the king of the fucking world. You never will be. So go take out your anger on someone else or SUCK IT UP you fucking ASS. I’m going to go see Darius to remind myself there are actually competent men in this shithole of a world.” She practically growled out the last sentence, turning to finally storm out the door.
30. things you said under the stars
It was a cloudless night, the kind with so many stars it illuminated the sky in a way that made everything feel clearer. It made her think. She thought about the way beauty could be right there in front of her, just hidden from view, like the clouds covering the stars. And Aurora wondered how many times she’d failed to realize that truth in her own life.
Deep in her thoughts, she didn’t hear as Darius approached and sat down beside her on the log. But when she caught sight of him from her peripherals, she was quiet to admire the way the small glow of the bonfire made his blue eyes so eerie and stunning.
“… You know,” she began, offering a soft smile and keeping her gaze on him. “I never actually forgot about you. I need you to know that… I regretted my decision but I couldn’t heal in the same place that hurt me. I couldn’t go back and I couldn’t ask you to come with me. So, I know this sounds a bit strange but… it was a actually a little comforting to look up and know you weren’t actually that far away. We were still looking up at the same sky. The same way we used to as kids camping out. Everything felt closer to me that way.”
41. things you said when you thought i was asleep (past)
“Hey…,” she whispered softly, turning her head to look at Darius laying beside her. His eyes were closed and his breathing slow, so Aurora wondered if he had already fallen asleep. “Are you asleep?” When her finger trailed gently over his arm that was still draped over her and he didn’t stir, the young woman allowed herself a small smile. Her eyes lingered on her lover’s sleeping features. Darius really looked so peaceful and innocent without the strain of consciousness.
“I wish I could tell you,” she said in a quiet breath, pausing to check if he was waking up. But it seemed Darius must have really been fast asleep. So, Aurora turned her head to stare up at the dark ceiling above her and continued musing. “… How much you really mean. I know you’d be weird about it though.” A tiny, slightly sad grin curled at her lips. She sighed quietly. “I don’t even think the girls realize… I can’t really see my life without these moments anymore. These moments with you.” She looked back to him, smiling as hazel eyes gazed over his tranquil features in the dark. “Maybe sometime I’ll tell you… for real next time.” She exhaled slowly, curling closer to him and closing her eyes. Aurora didn’t know his lips had curled up slightly after she was done speaking.
