Each time I visited the Luxembourg Garden in Paris, I saw elderly people throwing metal balls on hard dirt. It’s called “Pétanque”— a game originated from Provence in the early 20 century. Players or teams play their balls towards a target ball. The closest get the highest points. In Beijing, one of the most popular games is Xiangqi(象棋), also known as "Chinese chess". Similar to western chess, Xiangqi is a traditional Chinese strategy board game designed for two players, but it has different rules. It's one of the most popular games among elderly men. In public parks, it’s common to see two players surrounded by a curious crowd who watches and discusses the game as it goes. Interestingly, in both games we only see men playing. When tourists ask for directions in Beijing, sometimes they get even more confused afterwards, because many Beijingers use “Easy”, “West”, “South” and “North” instead of “left” and “right” to describe locations. But how is one supposed to know which way is North?! In old Beijing where streets are designed to align with the four directions like a chessboard, people have picked up the habit of using four directions as their basic reference. They observed the sun and use monuments to locate “North”. There’s even an expression “找不着北”— “cannot tell which way is North” meaning that someone is confused or clueless.
