Years ago I was bullied at primary school.
Dressed in clothes I didn't like but was forced to wear I walked from classroom to classroom, collecting books nobody wanted, taking care of them, reading them. I tried to tell everyone what they're missing, Aztec gods, Irish fairies, spirits and practices of First Nations and Inuits, Slavic dragons. They don't know that with thunder and storm, Thor is working hard with his dwarf-made hammer, they didn't know, you should leave pieces of bread or a cake in a corner of your home for Domovoj and his wife Kikimora. They didn't know and didn't even want to know about the past that made nations, that created and still creates reality for many. I was bullied for believing in things, practices and faith they didn't dare to read about.
Years ago I was bullied at secondary grammar school.
Dressed in clothes I love, as dark as night, I walked from classroom to classroom, sharing knowledge about history, culture, art, deities and practices, herbs and magic. I was called delusional, filthy and crazy heathen, lunatic.
Years later I am walking from classroom to classroom, teaching about everything I was bullied for and so much more. I am bullied no more. I am drawn next to dragons, or being in the forest with animals, I am hanging Mabon wreaths and talking about Odin.
I am singing old songs about those who Christians and those in power wanted us to forget, erase and leave for ever. And I am keeping them alive along with many others.
Emeraldine
Cobblestone leads the way; rustic browns, polished stone and a variety of bricks coming together to form a winding path. Morning light filters through tall evergreen trees and casts shadows, the frigid breeze of Winter carrying a reminder that the touch of warmth from Spring is still far off. You tug the scarf a bit tighter around your stinging cheeks and begin traversing the path, but urgency is far behind you. The scent of burning oak is heavy in the air, coupled with the fresh pine needles that scattered the ground from further off into the forest. Breathing deeply of the cold, comforting scents, your gaze lingers up towards the sky. Above, the Moon hangs high and crests in the sky; a sign of clear atmosphere, but easily forgotten as the streaks of day break take over.
It's solemn, but beautiful. A quiet majesty that is often overlooked by the rampant chatter of modern civilization.
As your path progresses, a building finally comes into view. It is built of grey stone—some white washed here and there from time—and stain glass windows made of a rich array of green stand out amongst it. The entryway is a set of double doors with not a handle in sight, but none are needed here. Force is unnecessary, as they are hung on the hinges of welcome. Entering, the rush of warmth is unmistakable from the roaring hearth at the head of the room, but it is overshadowed by the twinkling shades of green that seem to cover every corner of the room. The Sun's light filtering inside has cast emerald, olive, chartreuse and even seafoam; patterning the walls and your skin.
It is then that you take in more of the room. It is reminiscent of a church in structure, but in place of the rows of seats, there are two pools of water set in the floor; knee deep, from where you could guess. Wine Red carpeting covered the wooden floor and towards the hearth, there were two raised steps to form a stage, of sorts. Matching pillows sat a few feet in front of the fireplace, large and plush in size with gold stitching; inviting. Stepping closer, you begin to shed some of your extra clothing, the long forgotten exhaustion seeping into your mind again.
You have been tired for a very long time.
This place was a respite, built of your own unconscious and crafted to ease the tension that had strung deeply into your muscles; into your mind. Kneeling onto the pillows, you immediately borrow into them and feel a smile come to your face; there is a simultaneous peace that twines within your soul. An eagerness to rest and feel that familiar sense of self reassurance that has evaded you once again. A restful sleep with no worries of when you must wake or what you must do, as time does not go beyond the sunrise and the sunset. You are brought here when it is necessary and you leave when you are ready; a sanctuary of your own design.
As the depths of slumber tug at your eyelids—the crackle of fire and whipping of wind cradling the haze of your mind—you hum softly and watch as the same clusters of green dance across the room.
