ok, this Top 5 albums of the Year
1. If You're Reading this...... - Alpha Drake
People forget but this project kicked the beginning of the year off in a special way. Drake had been hinting at something since last year and in perfect timing around Valentines day (classic drake move) he hits us with these new vibes. with songs for the car, the girls, the feels and the woes this was my soundtrack to life. Oh, and this wasn't the old drake hacking bitches phone to read they text messages, this was like Brad Pitt Drake. “when i pull up on a nigga tell that nigga back back.”
2. To Pimp A Butterfly - King Kendrick
Last time we heard from Kendrick, he gave us the background into his story growing up in Compton on GKMC. Would he go back to Compton? would he take a commercial route? As the singles poured in it was obvi to see that Kendrick was speaking toward the time of now but with sound of back then. He ultimately would deliver a piece of art that would signify the ugly truth of the black experience in america in 2015. the young, murdered, voiceless and creative. “my knees getting weak and my gun might blow, but we gon be ALRIGHT”
3. Dirty Sprite - Future Hendrix
And out of nowhere future became zeitgeist for the culture. This is the only guy i see being bit more than Drake. I could have put Beast Mode or 56 nights on here seeing as they were both equally important and as good, but DS2 was a different monster . Giving most of the production over to Young Metro Boomin the tape has a steady groove to it that makes it perfect to start dancing or swaggin as soon as you hear a beat drop. some of these lyrics sound like a real cry for help that plays as an endless cycle of heartbreak, drug use, materialism, and savagery. “The way she did me it destroyed me....i kept it real with lil shorty”
4. Barter 6 - Young Thugga Shakespeare
Say what you want but this guy just makes hits on hits. Ilove lyrics like the next hip hop head but i feel like they are only a small part of the equation when it comes to good rap music, but he has lyrics too. Thug is in the business of making bangers and business is boomin. Coming off his rich gang success, thug needed to further establish himself as a solo star, in my opinion barter 6 did that. Thug displayed flows on flows and hooks on hooks, it seemed like he was actually trying to prove he belonged in the conversation. i never thought I’d see the day i anticipate new thug before new wayne “i promise i wont ever quit bitch im KOBE”
5. I Don’t Like Shit - Earl Sweatshirt
This album spoke to me personally. i was going through a break - up during the earlier part of this year and i needed something a lil deeper to vibe to. actually ran across this album on accident and thank heavens i did. this is some all killer no filler bars on bars on top of no bullshit beats. earl covers alot of ground on this project and gives it a very dark tone. total vibes. “ reversing my tires when my face didnt suprise you”
90s bitches to a 90s nigga.
Kelela - All the Way Down
this is some mature n sexy shit right here. not for the kiddies
