Imagining how much the Gretavans must have been shitting themselves when they first fought the Okaem. They must have heard stories and whatnot, but seeing one random girl casually walking across the battlefield to face an army, no armor, armed only with a dull blade. Easy fight, right? They were then shot 57 times.

I think Iisik and Unna have this almost sibling-like mentor relationship. Iisik protects her but also teachers her things. How to defend herself. How to make the special Deren family recipe for a classic Aenerian dish. Speaking to her in hushed Aerean. Teaching her about the gods behind closed doors, in metaphors and old myths. She hates the Aenerians, but she has no idea her favorite animal can only be found in the Aener. He protects her because he knows how important she is, and he tries everything in her power to keep the twisted claws of Gretavan out of her mind in little rebellions. But never too much. No, he's too scared for that. Always too scared.
Thinking about how the Okaem, and extremely powerful and old woman, was captured and held by the Gretavans. Sure, her magic was stripped from her through the antimagic serum, but even without her magic, her will and physical strength/dexterity is insane (and if rage adds to this...).
I suspect in order for the Gretavans to fully contain her they would have to remove her limbs daily, with chains not just around her body but embedded INTO her very bones to keep her still. She'd heal within the day, but the pain would be terrorizing.
She's been suffering like this for 11 years, too. Her body keeps fighting, keeping her alive. They know if they kill her she'll reappear in the Aener and escape, so they miraculously keep her from death every day through the torture and dismemberment.
On top of that, they also take her organs and blood which will all heal back and she can live without most of them, even if it's in a comatose state.
