okay so this was the scene in 21st century romanticism after britta and page have their fight over being straight where annie’s comforting britta and some drunk guy offscreen shouts “kiss her!” and like. I pretty much just. wrote that scene verbatim.

as for the last line, well. the whole fic is abt annie wanting to kiss a girl but never doing it and how she eventually gets to the point where she does kiss a girl for the first time, and this moment very obviously isn’t that moment, so “not like this” functions on two levels:- the broader metatextual level, where I, the author, am declaring (or at least. pointing out the canon) that, no, Annie Kissing A Girl doesn’t happen here, like this- and the dramatic characterological level wherein annie, prompted by britta’s rejection, realizes that, no, actually, this would be a really shitty place to kiss a girl for the first time, in public and egged on by some gross drunk man, and right in the wake of britta also loudly and publicly reaffirming her own heterosexuality by being outraged to find that her hip new lesbian friend– whom she only hung out with to get Ally Points– was actually also a straight girl, and after watching britta actually kiss page (which was fine because they’re both straight girls, and however unconsciously annie knows that she can’t fill that niche or replicate those circumstances, and she doesn’t want to)
