Friday: Preparation for the Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Revised Common Lectionary Proper 24 Roman Catholic Proper 29
Complementary Hebrew Scripture: Deuteronomy 17:14-20
When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, âI will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,â you may indeed set over you a king whom the Lord your God will choose. One of your own community you may set as king over you; you are not permitted to put a foreigner over you, who is not of your own community. Even so, he must not acquire many horses for himself, or return the people to Egypt in order to acquire more horses, since the Lord has said to you, âYou must never return that way again.â And he must not acquire many wives for himself, or else his heart will turn away; also silver and gold he must not acquire in great quantity for himself. When he has taken the throne of his kingdom, he shall have a copy of this law written for him in the presence of the levitical priests. It shall remain with him and he shall read in it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear the Lord his God, diligently observing all the words of this law and these statutes, neither exalting himself above other members of the community nor turning aside from the commandment, either to the right or to the left, so that he and his descendants may reign long over his kingdom in Israel.
Semi-continuous Hebrew Scripture: Exodus 31:1-11
The Lord spoke to Moses: See, I have called by name Bezalel son of Uri son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah: and I have filled him with divine spirit, with ability, intelligence, and knowledge in every kind of craft, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, in every kind of craft. Moreover, I have appointed with him Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and I have given skill to all the skillful, so that they may make all that I have commanded you: the tent of meeting, and the ark of the covenant, and the mercy seat that is on it, and all the furnishings of the tent, the table and its utensils, and the pure lampstand with all its utensils, and the altar of incense, and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the basin with its stand, and the finely worked vestments, the holy vestments for the priest Aaron and the vestments of his sons, for their service as priests, and the anointing oil and the fragrant incense for the holy place. They shall do just as I have commanded you.
Complementary Psalm 96
O sing to the Lord a new song; âsing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless his name; âtell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, âhis marvelous works among all the peoples.
For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; âhe is to be revered above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, âbut the Lord made the heavens. Honor and majesty are before him; âstrength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, âascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; âbring an offering, and come into his courts. Worship the Lord in holy splendor; âtremble before him, all the earth.
Say among the nations, âThe Lord is king! âThe world is firmly established; âit shall never be moved. âHe will judge the peoples with equity.â
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; âlet the sea roar, and all that fills it; âlet the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord; âfor he is coming, âfor he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, âand the peoples with his truth.
Semi-continuous Psalm 99
The Lord is king; âlet the peoples tremble! âHe sits enthroned upon the cherubim; âlet the earth quake! The Lord is great in Zion; âhe is exalted over all the peoples. Let them praise your great and awesome name. âHoly is he!
Mighty King, lover of justice, âyou have established equity; âyou have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. Extol the Lord our God; âworship at his footstool. âHoly is he!
Moses and Aaron were among his priests, âSamuel also was among those who called on his name. âThey cried to the Lord, âand he answered them. He spoke to them in the pillar of cloud; âthey kept his decrees, âand the statutes that he gave them. O Lord our God, you answered them; âyou were a forgiving God to them, âbut an avenger of their wrongdoings.
Extol the Lord our God, âand worship at his holy mountain; âfor the Lord our God is holy.
New Testament Epistle Lesson: 1 Peter 5:1-5
Now as an elder myself and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I exhort the elders among you to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do itânot for sordid gain but eagerly. Do not lord it over those in your charge, but be examples to the flock. And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away. In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility in your dealings with one another, for
âGod opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.šâ
