lucius  ,  while  quick  to  provide  his  son  with  many  a  material  gift  ,  often  failed  in  what  narcissa  did  best  ------  emotional  intimacy.  word  of  the  chosen  one’s  resurfacing  sent  the  pureblood  community  into  a  tizzy  ------  and  from  a  young  age  ,  draco  realized  that  his  kind  of  people  were  meant  to  stick  together.  his  father  became  more  &  more  agitated  ------  and  his  arrival  to  hogwarts  ,  once  meant  to  be  an  exciting  instance  of  his  coming  of  age  ,  took  on  a  darker  meaning.  his  father’s  numerous  gifts  became  a  touch  more  seldom  &  instead  ,  draco  received  lectures.  to  do  this  ,  to  do  that  ------  to  excel  where  potter  did  not.  how  could  a  mudblood  like  granger  surpass  him  in  his  studies  ?  had  lucius  not  provided  draco  with  more  than  enough  resources  &  tutors  during  his  summers  to  prepare  him  for  his  academics  ?  

this  is  not  to  say  ,  of  course  ,  that  lucius  did  not  realize  his  sons  desires  were  not  being  met  ;  his  tongue  lashings  often  lead  to  guilt  &  his  guilt  lead  to  surprise  gifts  to  appease  his  only  son  ------  and  soon  ,  draco  began  to  associate  material  items  with  his  father’s  love.  draco’s  relationship  with  his  father  ,  while  distant  ,  is  not  devoid  of  love  ,  of  adoration  ------  for  draco  always  knew  that  anything  lucius  did  ,  it  was  for  them.  his  mother  was  ,  naturally  ,  draco’s  everything  ;  his  departure  to  hogwarts  had  left  the  woman  near  tears  &  while  draco  took  the  time  to  write  her  as  often  as  possible.  

it  wasn’t  until  his  sixth  year  that  everything  fell  apart.  

the  war  was  reaching  a  head  &  his  father  ?  his  father  had  failed  the  dark  lord  ;  lucius  had  brought  disgrace  to  the  family  name  by  failing  both  voldemort  &  his  wife  and  son.  he  was  exposed  for  his  abhorrent  actions  and  for  that  ,  he  was  sent  to  azkaban.  draco  realized  then  that  his  life  was  certain  to  change  forever.  lucius’  loss  had  left  the  malfoys  with  nothing  ------  and  in  exchange  for  his  shortcomings  ,  draco’s  life  was  provided  in  return.  narcissa  had  been  horrified  ;  their  once  harmonious  marriage  fell  into  sudden  discord  as  lucius  conceded  to  providing  draco  to  the  dark  lord  in  repentance  for  the  sins  he  had  committed.  NOT  MY  SON  !  she  had  yelled  ,  loud  enough  for  draco  to  hear  through  the  stone  walls.  her  sobs  broke  something  in  him  &  draco  listened  with  empty  resolve  ;  lucius  felt  more  distant  than  ever  &  the  once  -  perfect  relationship  his  parents  held  seemed  to  falter.  draco’s  heart  ached  but  he  knew  better  than  to  weep  ;  he  was  nearly  17  now  and  ,  more  importantly  ,  he  became  the  dark  lord’s  assassin.  

as  the  events  of  the  war  began  to  unfold  ,  the  tumultuous  horrors  piling  upon  the  malfoys  ------  from  their  shame  ,  to  their  smear  -  campaign  ,  to  the  threat  of  azkaban  hanging  above  their  heads  ------  drove  draco  further  and  further  away.  his  mother  ,  dearest  narcissa  ,  could  hardly  recognize  the  boy  she  called  her  son.  and  lucius  -------  lucius  became  blinded  by  redemption.  draco  had  never  felt  further  from  his  father  than  he  did  in  those  moments  ,  but  the  single  thread  between  them  tied  together.  it  was  ultimately  narcissa  who  had  saved  them  all.  she  betrayed  the  dark  lord  &  with  that  ,  she  defected  with  lucius  closely  behind.  they  searched  for  draco  amongst  the  dead  &  the  living  until  the  three  were  reunited.  it  was  in  the  shambles  of  war  that  the  three  clutched  each  other  tightly  and  began  to  weep  ------  and  while  their  pained  relationship  wouldn’t  be  repaired  instantly  ,  draco  felt  himself  break  as  the  malfoys  turned  tail  and  fled.

the  post  -  war  trials  had  sent  his  father  away  -------  and  the  sudden  distance  was  enough  to  give  draco  time  to  heal  ;  his  father  ,  while  misguided  ,  had  tried  to  do  his  best  to  save  them  from  death.  he  had  failed  on  multiple  occasions  &  in  turn  ,  draco  had  been  the  one  forced  to  bear  the  burden  of  the  dark  lord’s  servant  before  he  had  been  ready.  his  mother  stayed  close  &  while  losing  her  husband  ,  her  partner  ,  the  father  to  her  one  &  only  son  brought  her  tremendous  pain  ,  she  knew  it  was  time  for  her  draco  to  grow.  to  find  himself.  he’s  estranged  from  lucius  for  now  &  his  mother  has  found  solace  in  a  quiet  cottage  on  the  french  countryside  ------  and  with  the  name  malfoy  smeared  through  the  blood  ,  dirt  ,  &  mud  ,  draco  is  left  with  nothing  but  himself  &  the  broken  pieces  of  a  family  that  had  nothing  but  each  other  through  a  war  that  destroyed  so  many.
