Alright alright let's start. So... To start things off, I personally believe that ShadowMarine is better off as a ship with headcanons as.. well. We all know what Smilk is like towards literally everyone he encounters, and he'd just treat Aquamarine like absolute dogshit and you know it. Which is why I've mostly been using my headcanons as a way to get by this ship. Unlike LonganPearl, which I can still see as working even without the need for headcanons, ShadowMarine is just one of the rarepairs where they wouldn't work in canon but oh boy is it endearing to see this fucked up eldritch horror of a psycho jester fall head over heels for a mermaid who likes plants

Let's get to my headcanons for the two; As much as I don't like using the term, Smilk is a tsundere towards Aquamarine, at least in the earlier stages of their relationship. He has no idea why he fell head over heels for some stupid pretty mermaid who loves plants oh so much but why does he FEEL this way towards her? It doesn't make any sense to him. He always hated the concept of love and didn't think much of it, but now? Oh boy something powerful must've stirred him up so badly that he can't seem to get her out of his head. Aquamarine on the other hand, isn't aware that he's been secretly admiring her and has been dropping off these flower gifts for her with a note on them simply saying “From a tricky admirer” and she gets a bit flustered everytime she gets one. Each gift becomes more and more extravagant as time goes on and Smilk becomes increasingly more infatuated with her that he decides to confront her face-to-face (refer to the artwork of him making an excuse for the assortment props and handing it to her), THAT'S when he made his feelings somewhat obvious to her.

Personally, I see this ship as Pining + Oblivious.
