Elu mask with hinged jaw, of the Ogoni people, Rivers State, Nigeria. Artist unknown; early 20th century. Now in the Brooklyn Museum. Photo credit: Brooklyn Museum.
After eleven years, Shell is finally coughing up money it was ordered to pay in 2010
The Anglo-Dutch company Shell has agreed to pay compensation to the community but has maintained that the oil spills were caused by third pa
The Ogoni, in particular. who have suffered the most from Shell's willful destructiveness in their lands, were able to outlast Shell's serial attempts to evade responsibility and accountability for its actions. This is no small thing given that Big Oil rivals the Catholic Church in its blend of lawyerly tricks and willful evasion of acceptance that it does have and must face consequences for what it does and does not do.

A few interesting traits from Kari 2019, The Languages of Rivers State of Nigeria: An Overview:
(1) a consonant harmony system I have not seen before but which makes excellent sense regardless:
(2) the perennial difficulties of assigning semantics to noun classifiers:
“Inanimate objects with a trunk” — this probably does not mean “statues of elephants”, so, an interesting way to express “trees”?
(I also wonder who’s going around giving people old-fashioned German names like “Ethelbert Emmanuel Kari” in Nigeria of all places. Seems appropriate / vaguely nominative-determinist for a comparative linguist though…)

Was planning to acquire one of these masks from the sculptor before a trip but couldn’t because he couldn’t find a commercial bus driver willing to bring the mask to PH. None of them wanted to help a juju get to PH. 😂 If you showed up at a friend’s house with one of these, will he/she say “cool mask” or “why you bring juju come my house na?” Maybe the goal should be for these to get to something close to the status that the Queen Idia replica masks have. Although the Queen Idia mask was probably not worn as a masquerade. #masks #ogonimasquerade #masquerade #karikpo #ogoni #artsymoments https://www.instagram.com/p/B8RTFitJGyS/?igshid=mq9b6fs5z12v

Book 37,2017: 'Looking For Transwonderland' by Noo Saro-Wiwa. "Travelling from the exuberant chaos of Lagos to the calm beauty of the eastern mountains; from the eccentricity of a Nigerian dog show to the empty Transwonderland Amusement park in Ibadan, Noo paints an engaging portrait of the country her father (Ken Saro Wiwa) loved ". Residing in London, this author took a trip down to those nooks and crannies of Nigeria to reacquaint herself with the land and this truly amazing travel-memoir book on Nigeria, its people and the hidden gems abound is the result of that journey. From Lagos to Ibadan, Abuja to Kano, Yankari to Jos,Maiduguri to Ogoni....and more places, this book contains plenty of knowledge about the country. Nostalgia is peak. Weltanschauung!
