INTRODUCIN #100- OGMH

Swiss rockers OGMH deliver a frenzied cocktail of gnarly guitars and rapid fire vocals intoning potent and passionate poetry. Their sound is a guarantee to start a party and get your body movin and groovin! With their recent debut Self-titled LP  and in between touring we had their lead singer Alex Night answer a few questions about his band’s sound and vision!

01. Hello. What's up and how are you doing?

Hi! Pretty good, we’re pretty pumped to finally have our first record out for the world to listen to.

02. What city are you based out of? What are some of your favourite things and places that you love about your city?

We’re from Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. It’s not that big of a city, it’s actually pretty tiny. But the best thing is, that it’s directly at the border to Germany and attached to the city of Constance, which makes our hometown quite interesting. Another awesome thing is the lake here. Without it summers would be quite boring. But that’s about it, pretty calm area around here.

03. What was the first show you ever played as a band like? Where was the venue and how did it go?

Phew…that’s ages ago, even before OGMH was a thing. We do music together since we were teenagers, but I can remember that we played our first “real” show in 2009 at some party and we were the first of three acts. The venue was pretty small, but I can’t remember how many people came. I recall how after the show a couple of guys told us how dope we were, but I’m sure we sucked really hard back then. It was our first show ever, obviously.

04. What are some bands that influenced you into making music?

That’s really hard to tell. Back in the day, when we were kids, we looked up to all those Rock bands like Blink 182, Green Day, Sum 41 etc. Probably those guys got us into making music. But as time went on we matured and so did our tastes in music. Nowadays I’d say we’re influenced by artists like Jack White, Fidlar, Wavves, just to name a few. But this doesn’t explain our fascination for synthesizers, which are quite prominent on our record ‘OGMH’. It’s hard to pin that part of our music to a band. I’d see this as our take on combining synthetic sounds with Garage Rock.

05. How did you come up with the name of your band?

Haha, this question comes up in every interview, but I can’t blame you for it. OGMH? What does this even mean? For those who follow us around a bit, know that we used to call ourselves Old Gypsy Man’s Hat when we formed the group in 2012. But a year or two later we thought that name was a bit too long, so we just made an acronym of it, hence OGMH. We think it looks way better and sounds cooler.

06. How would you describe the type of sound you make?

New Age Garage Rock. Does this make any sense, haha?

07. What was the first song you ever wrote together as a band? When did you perform it for the first time!?

No idea! Probably we performed it for the first time back in 2009.

08. What Was the inspiration for track Build It Up? How did you guys up with the concept for the video?

Build It Up is about a girl you want but can’t touch because you don’t want to get romantically involved with her at the same time. The concept of the video was pretty spontaneous because we needed a quick clip for the track. So I thought it would look pretty neat if I’d lipsync the lyrics and speed it up to get more hectic into the clip.

09. What was the inspiration behind Magic?

Magic is all about being wild with your friends and experimenting with mild drugs for recreational purposes and having a fun time. We do not encourage people to do drugs. Drugs are bad! (mmkay…) But it’s also about having bad experiences with them, hence when you took too much. Kind of the “live fast, die young” lifestyle.

10. What has been the most memorable show you ever played?

Actually that was our release show for the album we had on the 29th of October. Man, that show was so rad! The venue was packed, sweat was dripping from the walls, beer showers, crowd surfing. Just like a good Punk Rock show should be!

11. Do you have any sleeping tips for us?

Well if you mean sleeping tips for visiting Kreuzlingen, you’re welcome to crash on our couch, haha.

12. Any local bands in your area that you would love to tell us about?

You should totally check out Mr Leader & Orchestra. They are our brothers! We do a shit load of shows together. Other bands from our region would be Bordeaux Lip and Franky Four Fingers, just to name two more. They are really good friends too.

13. What was the inspiration behind Imagine?
