Last night I rewatched the last three episodes of season 1.
I felt that the last episode gave me a clearer understanding of how it was for a good friend of mine who transitioned. Watching Edward try to change from Blackbeard into Ed: adopting a new way of dressing (the silk robe), writing poetry and singing about his feelings, opening up and showing the real Ed.
At this point the crew accepted Ed just being Ed. Sure they were a bit confused at first, but when they chant his name “Ed Ed Ed!” it can be seen as their acceptance of him just being himself. Just as they accepted Jim as just Jim.
Ed seemed so close to turning into a seagull at that point. Embracing the feminine side of himself.
Obviously Izzy’s rejection of his transformation had a part to play in what happened next, but Ed also thought that Stede had rejected it too.
Even without Izzy’s rejection of him, and Stede’s perceived rejection, Ed wasn’t really ready to change. He needed the bowl and the magical words that Buttons had before he changed.
But most of all Ed needed to accept himself as Ed. It’s not just what others think at that point, it’s what Ed thinks about himself that matters.
So how is Ed going to change in the third season which we are all willing into reality? Can’t wait till we find out.

So I finally watched the last episode and I have thoughts™.
I can understand Izzy's death, the way they did it it made some sense. Just. Why now? Why at the end of the second season if they planned a season 3? It doesn't make sense, it's just too final now. Ed and Stede are all happy in their new home, they don't even really care about killing Ricky to avenge Izzy so what's the point of a season 3? I'll be happy if it gets renewed of course, I just can't see where it's going from here. Seriously, why?
