A snap splits the wind and wash of the sea like a whip, red hair glinting like fire in the dusky light. If Arthur wasn’t so exhausted, he thinks he’d be able to appreciate the red-gold crescent that clings to the horizon and the burnished gradient above stretching into a velvet purple, but his main priority at the moment is his mission. Stakeout nights aren’t bad nights. There are worse assignments: investigations, combat, intelligence. At the moment, though, all he can think about is a warm bed and the steady rhythm of Molly’s breath when she’s sleeping. Arthur thinks he should feel guilty for leaving her. ( The worst part is that no amount of guilt can change his mind from apparating into the night every time he receives his orders. ) He squints at his surroundings, blue eyes sharp and scanning. “Frank?” A whisper, though he’s not sure why. The rendezvous point is three miles from the house they’re supposed to be observing, and there’s no one else that lives in the near vicinity. “Frank, are you here?”

   She is not supposed to be there -- hunched over her desk, papers sprawled out before her -- but lately, Alice has become rather accustomed to doing what she’s not supposed to. If she is to make any headway in her investigation, she needs a quiet place to work, where there’s no one to disturb and no one disturbing her in return. At home, she feels too guilty to carry on with her work -- if her parents knew the sort of danger she’s tangled herself up in, well -- she doesn’t even want to think about that. Sometimes she takes her papers over to Mary and Lily’s place, but she feels guilty holing up at their kitchen table, nearly taking over & claiming it as command central. That’s why tonight, she’s here -- despite the big show she made of leaving work early, she’s found her way back -- making sure not to even enter the Ministry itself after she was certain every last auror would have left for the evening. 

   It’s easy to lose track of time when working a case like this one -- so many bits & pieces to connect -- so much investigating to be done. But she does not find herself growing weary ( perhaps that’s thanks to a certain potion she took to aid with alertness for the next few hours ). There’s nothing that can pull her from her focus -- not even the sound of the door slowly creaking open, soon accompanied by footsteps padding their way inside.
