The whole clan had been looking forward to the hatching of this particular nest.
Not because of how beautiful the hatchlings might be, or how strong or talented. It was because this nest represented the completion of the process of healing for one of their most beloved members. It represented the wiping away of a stain left behind by the only dragon in their history to be exiled. It was Ofili, or rather, Ofiliaâs first nest.Â
Out of all of Laleaâs children, Ofilia had held up the best. She hadnât given in to hatred and bitterness like Ciulin had, or run away from the clan altogether like the others. She had stayed and silently weathered the constant stream of cruelty borne of deep disappointment. The other members of the clan had quietly begun to move in and support her, before finally petitioning Barume to take action. Â
After Lalea was finally exiled, Ofilia began to both heal and blossom. She felt she could finally pursue friendships and hobbies. She learned that making mistakes was acceptable and normal. She learned how to smile and how to laugh. She learned what it meant to be loved for herself and admired for her attributes. She was astonished to hear that other dragons found her strength to be inspiring. One such dragon was the father of this nest, and seemingly destined to be her lifelong mate, Guillemot, or Gui.Â
He felt a connection to her through their neutral plumage colors. His parents loved him absolutely, but it didnât completely shake his instinctive feeling of inadequacy that stemmed from his dull colors. The fact that he saw her as beautiful helped him. What helped him even more was the fact that she was able to have peace with her appearance, despite the constant derision she had received because of it. Initially he only sought to repay her for helping him, even though she had not known she was doing it. However, their relationship developed into something much more. Her smiles and laughter became more pervasive because of him, which only encouraged him to be more outgoing and amusing. They built each other up and became inseparable, for no one else meant as much to them as the other.
This was their first nest. This was also the first nest that Tracery was going to preside over since his injuries at the claws of Ofiliaâs mother, Lalea.Â
Ofilia was nervous, but Gui was beaming and confident. He reassured her as they presented the three hatchlings. Barume was (much to his frustration) busy with other duties, leaving Tracery to carry out all the presentation duties. He decided to take a liberty and address the parents and clan before scrying the hatchlingsâ futures.
âWe all know that this is a very special day. This is truly the first day of a better life for us and especially out dearest Ofilia. This is not just the hatching of new life. This is a cathartic, healing moment. It is a victory, for all of us,â he said, trying to keep it short. He smiled at the parents and hatchlings. More quietly, to just Ofilia and Gui, he said,
âI donât need to consult the future to know these hatchlings will be loved and cherished,â he then carried on with the process. The first two hatchlings were destined for new homes, a boy who was the spitting image of Ofilia, and a girl with Ice wings. The last, a double white girl, was staying with the clan. He announced their fates and decided to initiate the naming ceremony of the hatchling that was staying right then.Â
âWhat would you like to name your daughter?â He asked. Ofilia had already thought about it, and Gui had agreed to the name.
âRaphaela. It means, âthe deities have healedâ, which I think is perfect.â Tracery nodded sagely and the clan members all signaled their approval. Tracery looked down at their newest member.
