Week 6
At first I tried to manipulate text and change the meaning by replacing words. But it did not work to me personally. My intention was to create double meaning to this poem and photographs and make double exposure photographs. I wanted to go there and take pictures in actual place. Of course I was not able to go to Offord/Suffolk, just because that place is opened only in the spring/summer time.
After a while I decided to look into text coding and its methods. I was particularly interested into morse coding, because it was invented during First World War. Andrew Motion written in this poem about First World War too. I decided to take one part of this poem and translate it into Morse code.
Morse code was used to reach someone from the distance. As Suffolk is an island. The part of the text that I chosen was also about water and connection. That is why I decided to translate it into Morse code and use it instead actual words to illustrate photographs.
At first I wanted just to show these photographs ( without layering morse code.) and play these symbols. However during our last session before winter break I was criticised. That it makes no sense, the concept is not good enough and there is no narrative.
I tried to play around with this Morse code and actual photographs. I used 35mm camera to capture these places outside Brighton and used morse code as the second layer on the top.Â
It looks simple and not intriguing, but I tried to make something out of my small research about morse code, this place and poem.
