How to Prepare for an Off-Grid Lifestyle

The first few years of living off the grid will always be a learning experience - I don't care who you are or how much you've read on the topic. Until you begin 'walking the walk', talking about being self-sufficient and living a sustainable lifestyle doesn't really count for much.

Before I moved my family totally off-grid nearly six years ago, I'd lived off the grid for relatively short periods and wondered what all the fuss was about. It was easy enough to plant and grow vegetables, and getting the hang of solar power wasn't so hard.

What I failed to consider during my experimental phase was the wealth of knowledge that only comes with first-hand experience over a period of years. Until you've faced a lengthy drought, flooding rains, catastrophic bushfire warnings, a bad harvest year and countless other unexpected and unplanned dramas that arise when you're seriously attempting to live off-grid with no connection to town water or power, you can't really imagine what off-grid living is really like.

I am hoping this site will become a place where others choosing or contemplating an off-grid lifestyle can gather to gain a few hints, ask a few questions and hopefully learn enough to make the off-grid experience a little easier.

For all the hard times, and there have a been more than I'd have liked, my family and I love living off the grid. There are so many pleasures and daily delights. We hope to live a sustainable lifestyle and remain self-sufficient for the rest of our lives.

It gets easier with time. :)
