Collin and Shauna sat across from each other, as they did every Friday on their lunch break. It was routine—expected, almost. Shauna picked the place; Collin picked up the food and met her at her salon suite.
They had been inseparable since seventh grade, when Shauna beat him up after school because Miles dared Collin to touch her butt. From that day on, they’d been in each other’s lives—when Shauna’s mom passed, when she had Zan, when Collin was locked up, and when Val left him. They had never left each other’s side.
“How’s Zan?” Collin asked.
“Oh my gosh,” Shauna sighed. “This boy is gonna make me pull out my hair.”
“Leave my partna alone,” Collin said. “He innocent.”
“Yeah right. Then you tell him to stop fucking peeing on the floor at school.”
“Peeing on the floor?” Collin laughed. Shauna shoved his shoulder.
“It is not funny! I don’t know how to deal with boys. I keep telling his dad to talk to him, but—” She stopped herself.
“Aye, I’ll talk to little man,” Collin said, trying to lighten the mood. “Can’t have him pissin’ on the walls. He gonna be peein’ on the kids next.”
“Don’t be making my son sound feral.”
“Well,” he shrugged, “he need to stop peein’ all over the gotdamn place.”
They laughed, and then a silence settled between them.
Shauna looked up from her food and caught Collin watching her. That flutter returned in her stomach, the one she’d been trying to ignore. Lately, he’d been coming by her place more often. Their phone calls stretched longer—sometimes all night. Whenever she brought Zan to see Nancy, Collin always seemed to be there.
“Collin?”
“You, uh… you got something on your face.”
“Oh.” Shauna wiped at her cheek but missed it.
“Let me.”
Collin reached over and wiped the sauce from the corner of her mouth with his thumb. He didn’t move his hand right away.
“There,” he murmured, bringing his thumb to his mouth and licking the sauce off.
“Thanks,” Shauna said quietly.
“You know I got you,” he replied. “Always.”
They went back to eating, but Shauna sat with the realization that he’d been here all along—showing up in ways no one else ever had.
When they were done, she walked him to the door. Just before he stepped out, she stopped him.
“Shauna?” he asked.
She took his hands and looked up at him. “So… is this a date, or are we pretending it’s not?”
Collin stepped closer. “I don’t know about you,” he said, “but I think I’m a little tired of pretending.”
“Hm,” Shauna murmured. “So what you gonna do about it?”
He lifted her chin, leaning down until their lips barely touched—
A knock echoed through the salon suite.
“Shauna! Your client’s here!”
Collin smiled against her ear. “Guess I’ll show you later.”

Miles watched as Ashley stepped out of the restroom wiping her hands on her jeans and make her way back to the arcade. She had been avoiding him since they got the pizza. It was killing him that she hasn’t told him why Andre called. He knew that whatever it is, it wasn’t good. If his case hadn’t been dropped, Miles would still be prison for another year. He would’ve missed five birthdays for Sean. Five years without being with Ashley. His mom. Trish.
“Miles,” Miles looked up and Collin was practically shoving Solace in his face.
“Come on bruh, I’m not changing no diapers.”
“Ain’t nobody asking you to change no diapers. Just hold her man.”
"Why?” Miles frowned
“Just take the baby, bruh.” Collin insisted. Miles rolled his eyes and took Solace from Collin. She stared at him as if trying to remember him before grabbing his nose.
“So you’re gonna try and take my nose? Huh?”
“Feel better?” Miles gave in as he kept playing with Solace.
“Yeah, takes me back to when Sean was this little.”
“Aight, now air out. What’s up with you and Ash?”
“Aint nothin' wrong, we cool.”
“You sure? That don’t look like cool.”
“Man we good.” Miles stressed
“You know you can talk to me about anything.”
Miles opened his mouth to but immediately closed it before simply nodding his head.
“I know bruh.”
“Good, can you hold her while I pull the car up?” Miles nodded again before Collin jogged outside
“Guess it’s just you and me, Solace. Don’t tell your Mommy and Daddy but your Uncle Miles gonna show you how to play spades cause your parents ain’t better than me.”
From across the bowling alley Ashley stood by the arcade watching Miles. She knows she has to tell Miles sooner or later about Andre wanting to stay with them, but she knows that the answer will be no. A part of her wants to say no and to leave them alone but she heard his voice over the phone and he sounds different, like the old Andre before he got caught up in all this mess.
“Ash, what’s going on?” Shauna questioned pulling her friend out of her thoughts
“Nothin.”
“Why the hell you over here then, you only bowled one round.”
“Just keepin’ an eye on the boys. You know I just saw this true crime story about these two kids who were taken out the arcade.”
“Really? Ash you can’t even watch Law & Order let alone true crime.”
“You can never be too sure.”
“Ashley, be for real. Come on talk to me.” Ashley moved closer so that the boys wouldn’t hear her.
“Andre called me.”
“Your brother?”
“Yeah, I haven’t seen him since that time he popped up at Sean’s 7th birthday party.”
“What did he want?” Ashley opened her mouth to respond. When Collin called out to Shauna.
“Babe, I got the car ready.”
“Call me later?” Ashley nodded her head, “Zan, let’s go.”
“Come on Mom. One more game.”
“Boy, if you don’t come on. Don’t make me get your dad.” Zan huffed before hugging Sean to run over to Shauna.
“Say bye to your auntie.”
“Bye Auntie Ashley.”
“Bye, Zan. Maybe your mom and I can plan a sleepover for you and Sean.”
“Really?” Ashley nodded her head. Not without earning a playful eyeroll from Shauna. Zan ran off to Collin to tell him.
“So, they gonna tear up your house, right?” Shauna teased, the two women hugged. “You know I’m here for you girl.”
“I know.” Ashley watched as Shauna and Zan walked over to Collin. Miles came back inside and motioned his head toward the door. Ashley nodded, turning to Sean.
“Sean, come on. Let’s go. It’s getting late.”
In the car the silence was anything but peaceful. Sean keeps stealing glances at his parents from his switch, he was old enough to know when his parents weren’t good. This was one of those times.
Miles kept his eyes on the road the entire time. Ashley’s eyes were between the window and the rearview mirror, keeping an eye on Sean.
“So, you really not gonna tell me what he wanted?” Miles started
“We’re not having this conversation right now.” She stressed
“So, when Ashley?”
“Not now.” Miles tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
“Whatever it is the answer is no. I’m not putting up with him—”
“Miles!” Ashley hissed through her teeth “We’re not doing this right now.” She said motioning to Sean who was clearly pretending to be on his phone in the backseat.
“I’m saying, why wait unless you really considering what he’s asking.” Ashley sat back and looked out the window, choosing not to answer because the truth is she was considering it.
“Ash. Ashley.”
“Miles, I swear to God.” She stressed. There was a brief silence in the car before Sean spoke up.
“You guys okay?”
“Yeah.” They both said simultaneously. They looked each other briefly before looking straight ahead. Both agreeing silently that they would continue later.
When they got home Sean raced through the door. Miles and Ashley trailed behind him, looking but not talking.
“Go ahead and go to your room, Sean.” Ashley said, Sean groaned in response.
“Can I stay up a little bit? Amir just texted me they’re about to get on a game.”
“It’s way too late for the game, tell them you’ll play tomorrow.” Sean huffed and was about to say something else when Miles gave him a look and he closed his mouth, defeated
“Okay.”
“Alright, now get on to bed.” Sean dragged his feet as he walked to his room. Miles and Ashley waited until Sean closed his door before both heading to the kitchen. Miles sat at the kitchen table while Ashley started to wash some dishes she didn’t get to before bowling. They stood in the tension filled silence as Miles scrolled aimlessly on his phone.
Ashley sighed, now that they were finally alone Miles didn’t want to the be the first one to bring it up.
“So, you not gonna talk now? You had so much to say in front of an audience.”
“I’m waiting on you, babe. You said later, .” Ashley rolled her eyes
“I don’t have time for this childish bull shit. What do you wanna know Miles?”
“You know what I wanna know. Why did he call you?”
“He wants stay with us for his probation.” Ashley muttered. Miles went wide eyed
“I know I’m hearing things. Say that again.” Miles stood up
“Miles don’t make me say it again.”
“No, because I thought you said, that he wants to stay with us for his probation.”
“Miles, I know how this sounds.”
“He go to a halfway house? Hmm, I wonder why.”
“That was years ago.”
“And yet here we are.” They both stared at each other, breathing heavily neither one of them wanting to give in.
“He’s not staying here.” Miles said definitively he took a long swig of his beer and stormed out of the kitchen, Ashley hot on his trail.
“So, that’s it then? What you says goes? End of discussion.”
“Ash, he’s not staying here. I can’t believe you’re even considering it.”
“He’s my brother! What am I supposed to do? Let him stay out in the street!”
“That’s the life he chose and that’s not your responsibility! That’s your fucking problem you always taking care of him. He’s not a baby, Ashley. His own choices got him here.”
“You don’t think I know that!”
“Do you? Or did you forget what happened four years ago?”
“That’s not fair.”
“What’s not fair is that I could be still be locked up!”
“You don’t think I know that?”
“No you don’t! You ain’t take the fall!” Miles yelled taking Ashley back
“It could’ve been five years without you, Sean, my mom, Trish! You think I wanted to see my son grow up through a glass? You think that’s how I wanted to propose to you?! Marry you? 48 hours once a month. That’s it. That’s all I would’ve had to hold on to for five years and you want to invite that back into our home?”
“I was just as pissed off as you. I haven’t even spoken to him since Sean was 7. But he’s my brother Miles. I promised my mom—”
“I know that you’d take care of him. Come the fuck on Ash! Think about Sean do you really want him around this?”
“I am thinking about Sean, you don’t know how hard this is for me!”
“It shouldn’t be that hard Ash! He’s not coming here.”
“You’re acting like I already made a decision!”
“Shit, it seems like it. At some point Ashley you gotta pic between being his sister and being my wife!”
Before Ashley could respond they heard a door shut. Both of their heads turned toward the sound and they inwardly groaned. Sean’s door. They both looked at each other, with nothing left to say; having already said too much and too stubborn to admit it.
“Good night.” Ashley said quietly before going back to the room and shutting the door behind her. Miles stared at the door—longer than he wanted to. He wanted to go after her but his feet wouldn’t allow him to move.
On the other side of the door. Ashley’s hand hovered over the knob. Instead, she snatched her hand away, pressing it to her chest like it burned.
She plopped down onto the bed and groaned in frustration. The apartment stayed quiet after that.
Miles didn’t sleep much. Not really.
Every time he shifted in the bed, he half-expected Ashley to turn toward him. She didn’t. Her back stayed to him, rigid, like sleep never quite came for her either.
At some point, the hum of the city outside softened into early morning stillness.
And just like that, it was the next day.
The alarm went off. Too soon. Miles was quick to turn it off. Already awake. He exhaled slowly and sat up.
In the kitchen, Ashley stood at the counter, already packing Miles’ breakfast and lunch. A travel mug sat waiting for him to grab.
Miles walked in. They looked at each other, nodded once, and mumbled a quiet good morning before moving around the kitchen like muscle memory took over where words didn’t.
“Sean up?”
“Yeah. I woke him up.”
“Good.”
They moved in silence, careful not to bump into each other.
“I gotta head out earlier today,” Miles said. “I need the car.”
Ashley’s jaw tightened.
“How am I supposed to pick up Sean and take him to karate after school?”
“I can take him.”
“But it’s easier if I do,” she said. “I get off before school lets out. Why can’t you ride with Collin?”
“He’s at the San Leandro location today.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t find out until this morning.”
Ashley exhaled through her nose.
“So what about me?”
“I gotta be at work, Ash.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Miles’ tone sharpened. “That’s not my problem.”
“It kinda is.”
“Ashley, I don’t have time—”
“Mom! Where’s my homework?”
“In the living room!” she called back, not taking her eyes off Miles.
She turned away first, shaking her head as she finished packing Sean’s lunch.
“Don’t worry about it,” she said. “I’ll make it work.”
Miles hesitated.
“Really?”
“Yeah.” She nodded once, tight. “I’m cool.”
“You sure?”
Ashley didn’t look up this time.
“Yeah.”
Sean ran into the kitchen, seemingly unaware of the tension that had been brewing moments before.
“Morning!” he said brightly, climbing into the chair beside Miles at the table.
“Morning, baby. Eat your breakfast.” Ashley set a hot plate of eggs, toast, and bacon in front of him.
“So Mom. Dad.” Sean took a bite, chewing fast. “I’ve been thinking. I wanna go to Hyphy Laser Tag this weekend.”
“Hyphy Laser Tag?” Ashley echoed.
“Yeah! Amir was talking about it at school. Can I go? Please?”
Miles and Ashley exchanged a look—quick, automatic.
“We’ll think about it,” Miles said. “Go on and eat. I’m taking you to school today.”
Sean grinned and dug back in, satisfied.
“Come on Sean! I don’t wanna sit in the drop-off line.” Miles called out. Ashley slowly walked toward him, his bagged breakfast and lunch and travel mug in hand. She handed him his food wordlessly.
Miles hesitated-just a second as if he wanted to say more.
Sean raced down the hall, backpack halfway on his back. Almost running past Ashley.
“Hey, hey, hey. No hug? Kiss?” Sean playfully rolled his eyes. He hugged Ashley and she kissed him on his forehead.
“Have a good day. Love you.”
“Thanks Mom, love you too.”
Sean looked at his parents expectedly. They both raised an eyebrow in confusion.
“Mom you didn’t say I love you to Dad. You guys always say that and kiss.”
Why did they give birth to such an observant child?
“Unless, Dad’s breath stinks?”
“What the hell?”
“Mom you can tell me if it stinks. I can talk to him in the car.”
“Get your nosy self in the car so we can go.” Miles handed Sean the keys who snickered and jogged to the car. Miles and Ashley stood at the doorway.
“Drive safe.” Ashely said quietly
“Yeah thanks.”
They kissed hurriedly. Awkwardly. Ashley stepped back inside.
“Hey,”
She turned around
“I love you.”
“Love you too.” Ashley walked back inside and closed the door. Miles stared at the door before Sean honked the horn.

“So you must Chef Sade. Daveed.” He greeted. Sade’s eye twitched in annoyance, she held back her meanest eye roll.
“Chef Thomas,” Sade corrected “Nice to mee you.” She spoke through gritted teeth.
“Well, I’m sure you have a busy day ahead. Let’s get started. Follow me.”
Sade had half the mind to walk back outside but she need this. She swallowed her pride and plastered on her fakest smile.
“Gladly.”
Sade followed Daveed into the elevator, he chuckled when Sade stood on the other side of the elevator. He pressed the top floor and then swiped his key card Sade assumed that floor must have special access to only residents.
“If we move forward then you’ll be given a card as well. You know to make things easier.” Sade nodded, a silence fell between the two.
“So, how long have you been in LA?”
“A few months.” She said curtly
“Damn, and you still can’t find your way around?” Sade snapped her head
“I’m joking, I’m joking. I’m just fucking with you.”
“So you must Chef Sade. Daveed.” He greeted. Sade’s eye twitched in annoyance, she held back her meanest eye roll.

“Why is you building so hard to find?”
“Is it hard to find or you can’t work a GPS.”
The elevator chimed.
Daveed stepped aside, motioning for her to go first, his smile slow and unreadable.
Sade walked past him anyway.
Sade moved through the kithjcen like it already belonged to her. She shrugged off her jacket and immeditale began assessing the space.
“My assistant bought the ingredients that you sent over.” Sade nodded once, already pulling her knives out of her bag before getting to work.
Olive oil warmed the pan. She sliced the shallots thin, precise. Garlic following soon after, the aroma bloomed instantly—familiar. She settled on salmon, quick and simple but she could show off her flavor profile and skill. Salt. Pepper. Lemon zest. The sizzling from the pan as she placed it skin down made her smile.
For the side, broccolini and cherry tomatoes. She tasted her vinaigrette and added a pinch of salt. She looked up and saw Daveed leaning on the other side of the island looking at her, with that same stupid ass smirk.
“Relax. I don’t bite.” Sade thought about her answer and smirked in response.
“Good, then I don’t have to get tested for rabies.” Daveed laugh dryly
“Very funny.” Daveed watched in awe as Sade plated the food with flawless technique. When she was done she slide the plate to him.
“You have a seared salmon garnished with lemon zest. Broccolini with blistered cherry tomatoes along with side arugula and green leaf salad topped with an apple cider vinaigrette.
Daveed took a bite and thought. Then another. And another. Until the meal was gone.

First Straw
Miles made it to the front of the school he looked at Sean who was uncharacteristically quiet the entire ride. Usually, Sean talks Miles head off when he drives him to school, since Ashley usually does it Miles takes advantage whenever he can. Even though it was four years ago he’s still trying to make up for the time he was in prison.
“Alright, man. Here you are.” Sean didn’t say anything, he looked up at Miles.
“Dad?”
“Yeah, what’s up?”
“Are you and Mom okay?” That took Miles back, he adverted his gaze. He knew that Sena heard them fighting last night but he wasn’t sure how much he heard.
“I know you heard me and your Mom last night. We didn’t mean for that to happen.”
“Amir’s parents fought last year and they got a divorce. Are you and Mom—”
“No, not all.” Miles shut that down before Sean could get it out. Four years ago he’d promised himself Sean would never have to ask questions like this. Promised himself he’d never let their life feel unstable again.
“Your Mom and I love each other very much. We’re just trying to figure something out and we didn’t do a good job talking to each other last night.” Sean didn’t look convinced, Miles grabbed his should and made him look at him.
“Mom and I are good. Okay?” Sean nodded his head
“Okay.”
“Alright, now get on before you’re late. Have a good day at school.” Sean grabbed his back bag before climbing out of the car
“Thanks Dad.”
“I love you Sean!”
“Love you too.” Miles waited until Sean was inside before he drove off.
The Last Straw
“Alright, Collin isn’t in today he’s training at the San Leandro location. So, you mutha fuckas stuck with me today.” A chorus of playful boos filled the locker room. Yorkie and Rob being the loudest. Miles flipped them the middle finger before looking back at his clip board. He stood up a little straighter; this was his chance to show that he could be a manager too which meant more money for Ashley and Sean. He wants Ashley to cut back on her hours. Wanted her home more. Wanted her less tired and she can’t do that if he wasn’t bringing in enough.
He wants to give her the wedding she deserves; no matter how many times she said the one they had was perfect.
In Miles eyes, Ashley deserves the world.
Miles quickly named off assignments to everyone, went down the list of things that they need to achieve before clocking out and the complaints from the previous shifts.
“Aight, so I need my drivers to really be careful on the road. Y’all fuckin up our reputation, according to Mina, we got six complaints yesterday about y’alls driving. If you can’t handle driving the trucks then ya ass gonna be sitting passenger princess.” Miles was met with a few laughs, he was about to close out and dismiss everyone when,
The Branch Manager, Knox, entered the locker room, a young college boy who just graduated with a Degree in Gentrification who had a knack for sucking all of the energy out the room. Miles bit his jaw, this kids was fresh out of college and walked in the door and was just handed the job without a second thought. Miles could name ten people that were deserving of a promotion, but that’s the perk of being the owner’s nephew.
“Morning everyone,” he greeted was met with a few grunts in return. “I’m gonna hand out assignments—”
“Oh I already handled that for you, big dog.” Miles interjected patting Knox on the back. Knox turned to Miles a tight lip smile plastered on his face.
“we changed the schedule.”
“Changed the schedule? Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
“It was in your mailbox. You didn’t check it?” Knox asked a subtle smirk that only Miles caught
He clenched his jaw, he did this shit on purpose. He couldn’t prove it but he just knew it.
“Don’t worry about it buddy. It happens, that’s why I’m the manager.”
“So did Miles give us the wrong assignments?”
“Yeah, but it’s alright team we can pivot. Now listen up for your updated routes.” Miles stepped back as Knox took over the room. He moved over to stand next to Yorkie and Rob who gave him a sympathetic look.
“Don’t worry about him, he just mad because he ain’t got no bitches on his dick.” Yorkie whispered
“Yeah, the only girl on his phone probably his Mama.” Rob added
“Miles.” His head perked up “You’re on Yard Duty.”
“Yard Duty? Man that’s some bull shit.”
“Well, since it’s obvious you’re not quite ready to properly lead a crew. You can make yourself…useful today.”
“Useful? Man fuck—”
“Everyone here at Commander Moving is a team player. No one is above any task. Isn’t that right, Miles?” Knox smirked; he knew what he was doing.
It took everything in him not to say anything; he was already on thin ice. He was lucky enough to get his job back. One mistake and that’s it. He’s gone. Miles let out a heavy sigh before putting on a neutral face.
“That’s right.”
“Good. Let’s a have a fantastic Commander Moving Day.”
Miles wiped his forehead, huffing as he plopped down on one of the benches in the locker room. Of course this had to be one of the hottest days and he spent most of outside--thanks to Knox--bitch ass. He sniffed his underarm and winced. Hopefully he still has that deodorant that Ash bought. That's when he smiled...slightly. He pulled out his phone and without out thinking opened Ashley’s contact and immediately started typing.
You won’t believe the bull shit that Knox just pull-
He stopped. He probably shouldn’t, he doesn’t want to pretend nothing happened.
“Miles! Can you give me a hand with this customer?” Someone called out to him.
“Yeah, give me a sec.”
He sucked his teeth before deleting the message and stuffing the phone into his pocket.
You can do it, put your back into it
I can do it, put your ass into it
You can do it, put your back into it
I can do it, put your ass into it
Put your back into it
Put your ass into it
First Straw
The bass from the speaker made the walls vibrate. Andre as he rolled over on the small futon in the makeshift guest room that doubled as an office. He reached for his phone only to see that it was dead. He looked further and saw the charger wasn’t fully plugged in. He groaned as he got out of bed and plugged it into the outlet completely. Then it hit him, he had an interview today.
Andre rushed into the kitchen, Tico didn’t even acknowledge him, too busy counting stacks of money with two girls, a cigarette hanging out of his mouth.
“Aye,” Andre said the music drowning out his voice.
“Aye.” He tried again, louder. Still nothing
“Aye!” Tico finally looked up and smiled
“Aye, what up Dre? How you sleep?”
“Fine, you know what time it is?”
“Uhhhh, 9:53.”
“Why you ain’t wake me up? I told you about my interview!”
“Nigga, I ain’t yo Daddy.”
Andre went back to the room without an explanation. His interview was at 10:00 in Alameda. His P.O. set up a job interview at a Hardware store, they’re second chance friendly and he didn’t want to get off on the wrong foot already. He stumbled over his shoes as she checked his phone battery
12%
Close enough. He raced out of the house and dialed his P.O.’s number as he ran to the bus stop.
Hey this is David. I’m not available—
Andre ended the call and dialed it again. After a few rings it went to voicemail again.
Hey this is David—
“Come the fuck on David!” Andre ran to the bus stop hoping he wouldn’t be too late. He couldn’t mess up already; it’s only been one day. Then he saw it—the bus, he ran harder. Faster. Just as he made it the doors shut. He banged on the doors,
“Come on man! Open the door!” The bus driver ignored him as he drove off
“Fuck!” Andre shouted in frustration. He plopped down on the bench, resting his head in his hands. The judge’s words replaying in his mind,
“You are now a convicted felon, Mr. Johnson. It is your job, no, your duty to prove them wrong.”
Andre checked his phone for the time
10:05
He stood up and ran for the next bus stop.
Second Straw
Andre huffed as he entered the hardware not without earning the judgmental looks of customers. He must’ve looked crazy, a hot sweety mess, shirt wrinkled and disheveled, pants sagging, belt halfway buckled. He waited in line to speak with the cashier an older man eyed him suspiciously. Andre offered a tired smile before the man huffed and walked away.
“Next!” Andre quickly approached the counter, leaning on it for support
“Uh, can I help you?”
“I’m here for the interview at 10:00.” Both their eyes glanced to the clocked above the front door.
10:36
“Look I know I’m late, but I really need this job. I’m tryna,” Andre huffed out of breath from running here from the bus stop. “I’m just tryna to get myself together.” The man looked him up and down before checking what looked like a planner
“You said you’re here for an interview?”
“Yeah, Andre Johnson, my P.O. set it up, David Whitaker.”
“Sir, that’s not until tomorrow.”
“What? No, he told me it was today. April 6th at 10 AM.”
“I’m telling you, it’s tomorrow.” Andre sucked his teeth and reached into his pocket to pull out his phone.
“Imma show you the text.” Andre tapped his phone screen. Nothing. He tapped it again. A blank screen stared back at him. He held the home button and dead.
“Man, today’s the 5th.” The cashier showed him the planner and sure enough, it’s the 5th. Not the 6th.”
“Damn it,” He whispered
“Just a heads up, just give us a call next time. We’re just a hardware store.” He patted Andre’s shoulder “See you tomorrow.”
The Last Straw
Andre nervously tapped his foot on the ground as he waited for her to walk out the door. If he remembered this is where she worked. He used to bring her lunch from time to time and they would sit on this bench during her break. Talk about where they see themselves, what they’d hoped to accomplish. All that faded away when Andre went to prison.
Andre’s head snapped up when he heard the door open and that’s when he saw her. Wearing her favorite color, emerald green scrubs, her hair’s different…very different, shorter than when he last saw her like it was growing back after she cut it. Her face a bit colder, he was partly to blame for that.
“Leah,” Andre breathed, he almost smiled when their eyes met…almost, until he saw her entire demeanor change from disbelief to anger.
“What the fuck are you doing here, Montrell?”
“Montrell? You using my government name again?” Andre tried to joke awkwardly but dropped his smirk when Leah held her glare.
“I’m gonna ask you again, what the fuck are you doing here?”
“I came to see you. Maybe talk.”
“When you get out?” Leah asked, ignoring his answer.
“Yesterday. I’m on probation.” Leah nodded stiffly
“You at a halfway house?”
“Nah, I’m with Tico for now.” Leah rolled her eyes, not surprised, which Andre noticed and immediately tried to clean it up
“But it’s not permanent. Imma stay with Ash and Miles.” Leah raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything.
Andre took a step forward and Leah, a step back. He can’t lie it hurt but he deserved it.
“I just wanna…” Leah looked at Andre expectantly. Andre sighed
“I wanna see Malik.” Leah scoffed, she fucking knew it.
“The answer’s no. Good bye.” Leah said curtly before brushing past him.
“Leah! Leah!” Andre followed her as she kept walking toward her car
“Leah, don’t fucking keep my son from me!” That made Leah freeze. She turned around and approached Andre slowly.
“You don’t get to demand to see my son! Where the hell have you been?”
“Leah, you pushed me away! You left me out of my son’s life.”
“How the hell did I get there?!” Leah yelled
“Don’t show up here again.” Leah said lowly, storming to her car without a second glance. Andre watched as she got in and sped off. Andre roughly ran his hand over his head.
“Fuck!”
Since Miles took the car, Ashley called Scotty to ask for a ride but he was coming in later because he had an appointment. So, Ashley had to take the bus. No big deal, she’s been taking the bus all her life. When she first got her job at the Alcatraz Hotel she had to take the bus.
First Straw
Not only was the bus late, but it broke down. Ashley had to walk three block in three inch heels to the hotel. By the time she got there was tired, hot, and irritated.
Ashley marched through the hotel lobby ignoring the looks of her coworker, the newest one some college kid, didn’t quite read the room.
“Good Morning, Mrs. Turner, how’s you day?”
“Well it feels like a bunch of tiny fucking needles are stabbing my feet right now. How’s that sound?”
“Um-uh-I?” He glanced at his peers for backup who immediately either looked away or attempted to hold in their laughter.
“I didn’t think so.” Ashley said before heading straight to her office.
Second Straw
Once she got to work and logged onto her computer she was met with emails upon emails full of even requests, wedding walkthroughs, vendor approvals, and so on and so on. Just as she was about to her lunch she should’ve eaten an hour ago; she was pulled away to diffuse a situation with a guest and the newest Front desk associate. Ashley wasn’t technically a manager — but when things went wrong, everyone looked at her. She saw an older white woman practically berating one of the new hires.
“Hello Ma’am, I’m Ashley, Guest Relations Coordinator, what seems to the problem?” Ashley asked a fake smile plastered on her face.
“Your incompetent staff member here, what’s your name?”
“Keri.”
“Keri, refuses to let me check in.” Ashley turned to Keri waiting for her to elaborate.
“Her ID and the name on the credit card don’t match.” Keri said
“And I don’t see why that’s a problem.” Ashley turned to the woman with a knowing smile
“Ma’am, we would love to get you settled into your room however, if the names do not match on your ID and the credit card you are attempting to use we are not allowed to check in you.”
“That’s ridiculous, this is my mother-in-law’s card. I’ve done this same thing at this hotel many times before.”
“Okay, well that’s not true—”
“You’re calling me a liar?” Ashley exhaled deeply
“Ma’am, per hotel policy—”
“I don’t give a damn about hotel policy. I want to be check in right God damn now!” The woman slammed her hand on the desk. “I mean what’s the problem? I can call my mother-in-law.”
“Ma’am, it doesn’t matter who you call. We can’t verify that it’s actual your mother-in-law. Until you give us a card that matches you ID, you will not be allowed to check in.” Ashley stressed, she couldn’t believe that she was having to explain this to a grown woman.
“I’m a platinum member, is this how you treat your platinum members?”
“Ma’am I don’t give a fuck if you a platinum, diamond or blue member. If you don’t have a credit card matching the name on your ID you can’t fucking check in. So either give us a credit card with your name on it, it’s probably Karen or some shit. Doesn’t fucking matter. You know what, get the hell up outta here and take ya ass to a damn Motel 6! How many fucking times do I have to—”
“Mrs. Turner!” Keri said, nudging Ashley’s shoulder, bringing her back to reality.
“I’m waiting. I do not have time for this. I’m supposed to meeting a very important client or lunch.” Ashley’s eye twitched is she seriously rushing them?
“Bitch if you gave us a credit card with your name on it none of this would be happening. You probably maxed out on that shit with your low ass balance—”
Ashley was brought when the woman clapped in her face.
“Hello? I’m waiting. God, these fucking people.”
Everyone was looking at Ashley waiting for a response. How long had she zoned out? Doesn’t matter, she’s used to this, she’s Ashley, it’s what she does best. She cleared her throat and smoothed done her blouse before putting on her perfected costumer service smile.
“Ma’am, unless you can produce a credit card that has your name on it we will not permit you to check in. If you refuse to produce said card, we’ll be forced to not only call the police to have you removed but you’ll also be banned from ever booking with us.” The woman stared at Ashley as if it was finally sinking in that she wasn’t going to be able to scam er way out of this.
“I think I have another card.” The woman said slowly reaching into her bag.
“Great!” Ashley said brightly. “Keri, once she gives you her card get Mrs?”
“Donahue, Karen Donahue.” She muttered, Ashley’s smile got even wider.
“Get, Mrs. Donahue squared away.” Ashley leaned in close to Keri’s ear. “Put her on the fifth floor next to the sweet sixteen party.” Ashley looked up at Mrs. Donahue again, sweet smile plastered on her face.
“Enjoy your stay at the Alcatraz Hotel, if you need anything. I’m Ashley.” Ashley turned to walk away smile instantly falling.
Ashley pulled out her phone and without thinking about seconds from calling Miles. Her thumb hovered over the call button. She shook her head before going back to her office.
Third Straw
Three wedding walk-throughs and two event meetings later Ashley was ready to go home. She was seconds from logging out when she saw an email from the Hotel Owner.
Subject Line: Job Well Done on Food and Wine Event
Ashley smiled, she was the brain child behind that whole event, she worked all day and night on making sure it was the perfect event. From the food vendors down to the entertainment, Ashley planned things so perfectly that people thought she was the hotel manager. So, to be shouted out by the Hotel Owner would be a huge boost for her next promotion.
She skimmed the email, It was a beautiful event…staff did an excellent job…congratulations to our Hotel Manager Jessica Pratt for organizing the event.
Jessica fucking Pratt? The same bitch who doesn’t even know what to do with her mouth unless there’s a dick in it? Ashley slammed her laptop closed.
She looked at her watch: 5:00 PM. She stilled stayed longer than she wanted to. She packed up her things and locked the door before going to the Lead Front Desk Associate to give one last word of encouragement before handling the night shift.
“Don’t call me unless the hotel is literally on fire or the building is about to collapse. If you call me and neither of those things are happening I’m cutting both of your fucking balls off before they even get a chance to drop. Capise?”
“Capise.” The new Lead said more afraid of Ashley than the actual building possibly setting on fire.
“Great, don’t fucking call me.”
Ashley was lucky enough to catch a ride with Scotty who talked her ear off the entire ride when all she wanted was silence.
Last Straw
When Scotty dropped her off, Ashley couldn’t get inside fast enough. She kicked off her heel, reached under her blouse to quickly undo her bra and flung it to the side not caring where it landed.
She headed straight to the kitchen, grabbed her favorite wine glass, opened the liquor cabinet and…
“FUCK!”
Empty. Nothing. Not even enough for a shot of anything. She groaned in frustration and let her head drop. Which led her to now, sitting on the sofa drinking water…out of a wine glass.
Trish entered the Turner house using the key Ashley knew she’d copied, though she swore up and down Miles had given it to her. Ashley didn’t even care anymore. She was still bothered by the fact that she hadn’t heard from or seen Miles since he left for work this morning.
“What it is?” Trish asked, kicking the door closed behind her.
“Hey,” Ashley mumbled, taking a long sip from the wine glass in her hand.
Trish squinted. “What you drinkin’?”
“Water.”
“From a wine glass.”
“Yep.”
Trish frowned. “Why?”
“Because I don’t have any wine, Trish.”
“Then go get some. The fuck?”
“I can’t. Miles took the car this morning.” Ashley lifted the glass again. “So Imma drink this water until it start tastin’ like wine.”
“That don’t make no sense.”
“It ain’t make sense when Jesus turned water into wine either. So Imma pretend this is wine.”
“That still don’t make—”
“Shut the fuck up!” Ashley snapped. “I don’t gotta explain shit to you! Damn.”
“Damn Ash, what crawled up in you and died?”
“Nothing.” Ashley tired into the glass, not really sure what she was waiting for or if she didn’t want to say it out loud.
“Where’s my brother?” Trish questioned as she sat across from Ashley on the other couch.
“He’ll be here soon.” Ashley exhaled sharply. Then she got a notification on her phone. A text. From Miles.

Previous Chapter Chapter Two Chapter Three
Tierra bounced with excitement as she drove to ABC for her first table read. When you got the script you were cast to be a new hire at Andre’s job. That was pretty much it there was nothing else listed for your character, not even a name. Which confused her, maybe they couldn’t decide on a name.
She couldn’t keep the smile off her face while she was shown around the studio where they would be shooting. She was introduced to the hair and make-up team. Then she was shown to her trailer, she was sharing it with another recurring character. Tierra didn’t care, she was basking in the moment. She was walking around before the table read when someone called out to her.
“Hey, you’re Tierra, right?” She turned around and her function to form words and speak went out the window
“Yes, um you’re Tracee Ellis Ross!”
“Nice to meet you. I’m really excited to have you on the show. Yara listens to your music all the time.” Tracee smiled and then waved someone over
“Oh, there she is. Yara, what’s that song you always play?” It felt like Tierra’s brain was going into a short circuit. Here are these two huge celebrities talking to her like she was one of them, well, she is now.
“Oh my goodness, you’re Tierra! I’ve been so excited to meet you.” Yara said with an infectious smile on her face.
“Me too, I’m such a fan of the show.”
“Yara, what’s that song you’re always playing in your dressing room.”
“Oh, Speculate! That is my favorite song on the EP.” Tierra smiled widely, it was finally settling in that she was becoming a celebrity in her own right.
“Thank you! That means so much to me,” A bell rang throughout the studio signaling that a nearby studio was set to start filming.
“Let’s head to the table read, you can meet everyone else there.”
“Hello everyone, welcome to the table read of Season 3 Episode 2, “God”!” The director, Anton said there was light applause throughout the room. “We do have a new script and a new character that will hopefully become recurring as the show progresses, the singer, Tierra is playing a new hire at Dre’s job, her name is Melody. We also have a new recurring character for this season, Daveed Diggs,” Tierra's smile instantly dropped, she looked down at the other end of the table and saw Daveed sitting next to Marsai Martin and Jenifer Lewis. He saw her and flashed an arrogant smile and wink. In turn, she rolled her eyes at him. “Mr. Diggs has graciously joined our cast and will be acting as Rainbow’s brother, Johan.”
The table read was going great, Tierra wanted to pinch herself she was in the same room as Trace Ellis Ross, Jenifer Lewis, Anthony Anderson, and Laurence Fishbourne. It was getting ready to be her scene when the butterflies came Tierra let out a breath as she waited for her cue.
“Dre, you hear about the new hire?” Deon Cole’s character Charlie started
“Yes and I hear, it’s a black person. I swear, Rhonda coming in and she’s finally turning this place around.” Anthony Anderson responded
“Hi, I’m Melody. You must be Andre?” Tierra said confidently
“Yes, nice to meet you, Andre Johnson, senior VP.”
“Charlie, another black person,”
“Alright. So, what school did you go to?”
“I went to North Carolina A&T—”
“An HBCU?” Anthony wept
“Yeah, I majored in Marketing, I worked for a small company out there, and then I came back home to Compton—”
“I’m from Compton! Ooh, this is great, wait, wait do you know someone named Pookie?”
“Which one?”
“The Pookie that got the barbecue joint.”
“Man, Pookie my cousin!”
“Since you guys, both know Pookie,”
“Here we go,”
“Do two happen to know Helena Thorton?”
“Charlie, no one knows who that is.”
“Just asking for a friend, but if you ever run into her you don’t know me.”
“Um, is he always like that?”
“Every day.” That was the only scene you were in for the episode or so you thought until another scene came up at Andre’s job, this must be the new changes to the script.
“My daughter is lost!” Anthony said dramatically
“What’s going on?”
“Melody, my daughter doesn’t believe in God.”
“Is this conversation work appropriate?”
“I though all black people believed in God,”
“Seriously, do you guys actually have these conversations at work?”
“Josh, not all black believe in God.”
“He’s right! My Uncle Leroy is apart of Nation of Islam.”
“Charlie you’re not helping.”
“Melody what do you think? You’re black, do you believe in God?”
“Melody doesn’t think anything about this subject. This conversation is nothing but an HR investigation.”
“Oh, we don’t worry about HR now that Lucy’s gone.” The men laughed
“Dre, I just never thought that it would be possible to meet a black atheist.”
“Y’all do know that black people—you know what, nope. I’m not about to be sucked into this.”
“My baby is damned to hell, I don’t know what to do.”
“You gotta give her an exorcism, I know a guy Dre. My cousin Peanut is an exorcist but only on Tuesdays at 3:30.”
“Charlie I am not going to give Zoey an exorcism!”
“We’re not talking about Diane?”
“Charlie, what—”
“That child has had it out for me since the day I met her.”
“Look, Andre, you’re gonna have to let her find her own way.”
“Huh?”
“Listen, if you force it on her you’re gonna turn her away even more, but even if she has questions just answer them honestly.”
“Wow, thanks, Melody. Is that what your parents did to you?”
“Oh absolutely not, I don’t believe in God. My parents ruined that for me.” You laughed
"What?"
The rest of the episode played out and when they reached the last page of the episode, the director told everyone when they were shooting and their call times. Tierra was led back to her trailer, the director wanted her to stay behind to go over some things. While walking back she saw Tracee and Daveed talking to one another, she quickly looked around for another way to get by them without being seen. Tracee looked up and smiled upon seeing her and waved her over. Tierra rolled her eyes, put a smile on her face, and approached the duo.
“Hey Tierra, have you met Daveed?” She could lie, say no, and keep it pushing, but what if he already told her that they were neighbors and they just wanted to see what she would say.
“Uh, yes actually we live in the same apartment complex.”
“Oh wow, that’s cute!" Damnit.
You guys can go over your scenes together then.”
“Excuse me?”
“Kenya didn’t tell you? You and Daveed are gonna be love interests this season.” Daveed smirked at Tierra and had to force himself not to laugh at the look on her face. Tierra swallowed dryly and put on her best fake smile.
“Oh wow, that’s gonna be fun.” She said glancing at Daveed
“Can’t wait, neighbor,” Tierra could literally slap that look off his face, but he would probably like it.
“I’ll see you guys tomorrow.” Tracee waited until Tierra walked away before sending a look to Daveed who shrugged his shoulders
“What?” He laughed
“Daveed, stop fucking with her.” He held his hands up in defense
“I’m not I swear.”
“Daveed,” She said warned “I mean it,” sending one last playful glare
“Tiffany I have to kiss him twice!” Tierra said
When she looked over the new script one that included not one, but two kissing scenes with Daveed. Sighing heavily she tossed the script on her coffee table.
“TeeTee, it likes two pecks, the first one isn’t even a real kiss. It’s like a peck on the cheek.” Tiffany explained
She was right, they weren’t major kissing scenes, but still, you had to put your lips on him.
“Maybe I can tell the director that I don’t feel comfortable kissing maybe I can fake it,”
“Or maybe you can tell him that you don’t want the job anymore. Come on TeeTee!”
“I don’t like him he’s an arrogant asshole,”
“So you hate a paycheck, even more, listen I’m not your manager but you better imagine you’re kissing Idris Elba and get over it.” She didn’t want to admit it but Tiffany was right.
“Fine,”
“You acting like he’s ugly, you should just fuck him and get it over with,” Tiffany added
“Absolutely not, I’d rather fuck with Mike again.”
“Okay, he can’t be that bad. You doing the most at this point you don’t even talk to him.”
“So?”
“So, you’re basing his entire personality on one encounter.”
“Yes.” She said firmly
“You and your brother are just alike.”
“And? You make it sound like a bad thing.”
“You should maybe try it get to know him, you are going to be working together and who knows. Based on how this season goes you may be more than recurring characters on the show.”
“How would I get to know him?”
“Tierra I don’t know, bake him a cake.”
“A cake?”
“Listen, you have to work together now you could make this a great experience or a bad one.” Tierra huffed, Tierra rolled her eyes
“I have to go, I’m styling a new client. I have to shop for some new clothes.”
“Who you styling?”
“Can’t tell you. You’ll see on Instagram. Bye girl”

Previous Chapter Chapter Three Series Masterlist
Tierra arched her back off her bed as she moaned aloud. She gripped the sheets tighter if that was even possible. She whined when she felt a gentle but noticeable bite to her clit, she tried to move away but a pair of hands tightly gripped her hips pulling her back, almost bruising her skin not that she cared at this moment.
“I said not to move.” A voice said from between her thighs. She digs her heels into the mattress she could feel her orgasm coming. Her body counting down.
“Don’t you dare,”
“I can’t. I can’t.”
“You were doing such a good job for me. Can you keep being a good girl for me?”
Just as she was about to release the consistent but faint buzzing of her vibrator stopped. Tierra snapped her eyes open and sat up. Why does this always happen to her? Tierra looked at her pink-colored friend like it had betrayed her. She should really get one of those rechargeable ones. She looked at the time on her clock, she had to get ready to leave anyway. She groaned in irritation as she hopped out of bed to get ready.
Tierra was leaving her apartment at the same time as Daveed and his tenth groupie of the week, not that she was keeping track or something. Upon seeing her, Daveed had an idea hit him. He grabbed the woman by the arm and kissed her loudly. Tierra looked up and frowned in disgust and annoyance. Daveed was the first to pull away
“See you later Daveed,” She smiled
“Definitely gonna see your fine ass later,” Daveed replied
“Wow, Daveed what’s this? Number six, this week.”
“Six?” The woman questioned
“Oh baby girl, you really didn’t think you were the only one?” Tierra asked her
“Daveed?”
“Don’t believe my neighbor she’s just fucking with you, Alana.” The woman’s good mood instantly faded
“My name’s Porsha, asshole.” She stomped off and Daveed chased after her.
“Wait, wait, I knew that! Porsha come back!” Daveed walked back and glared at you
“You know, interestingly, you go out of your way to bother me? What’s that about?” Tierra smirked
“See you on set neighbor!” Tierra walked away Daveed went to open his door but it was just his luck that his door was locked
“Fuck!"
Onset, Tierra felt her nerves starting to get the best of her. Not only would this be the first time she was in more than one scene but it was also the scene of her kissing Daveed.
“Tierra, we’re ready for you on set.” Sensing your nerves the makeup artist smiled softly
“If it makes you feel better, I think Digg was a little nervous.” You smiled softly not entirely convinced
Stepping onto the set it was only you, Daveed, Marsai, and Miles.
“Okay so you and Daveed are watching the twins for the night and this kissing scene is kinda like an almost kiss because they burst right into the kitchen and ruin the moment.”
“So we’re not actually kissing are we?”
“This first one, no but there’s an actual kiss at the very end when he walks you to the door.”
“Don’t worry Tierra, I won’t bite unless you want me to?” You scoffed and rolled your eyes at him
“Alright, quiet on the set! Roll playback!”
“Episode 3.14 Scene 8. Take 1, Marker!”
“Action!”
“Sorry you got looped into this with me, Melody” Johan stated as they cleaned up the remaining mess in the kitchen.
“No problem at all! Looks like you needed my help with them.”
“Thanks again, I’m not that good with my nieces and nephews.”
“Johan,” She gently placed your hand on his “I didn’t mind really. I had fun.” Melody said hesitantly
“With the twins? Jack’s pretty funny but I’m a little—”
“Well, I had fun with you too, Johan.” They stared at each other for a moment before leaning in for a kiss and then the twins came running into the kitchen making the two of them jump away from each other
“Uncle Johan!! Diane took my Cheesy Charlie tickets!” Jack whined
“It wasn’t me! I would never do that to my twin brother.” Melody and Johan exchanged a look before turning their attention to Diane.
“Diane, you know it’s not good to lie,” Johan said
“And it’s not good to wear your hair like that, but you don’t see me telling you how to live your life.” He stepped back taken aback by his niece’s ruthlessness.
“Let me,” Melody bent down to Diane’s height “Diane, if you don’t give Jack his tickets back I’ll have to tell your parents.”
“Or what, Melody?” Diane challenged raising an eyebrow
“I’ll show your parents your browser history…all of it.” She challenged right back smirking at the ten-year-old.
“Fine, the tickets are under my bed. Watch your back, tonight friend.” She said to Jack before he ran off.
“I got my eyes on you, Melody.” Diane held her stare until she left the kitchen.
“CUT! Alright let’s do it a few more times for safety and then the last scene and it’s a wrap.” Tierra and Daveed did the scene about five more times and then the crew quickly directed Tierra and Daveed to the next scene which was the actual kiss scene.
“Alright, episode 3.14. Scene 9. Take 1. Marker!”
“Action!”
“Seriously, Johan. You don’t have to walk me out to my car.”
“I know, I—I-I just wanted to make sure you didn’t fall. You a lot of accidents happen on the way to the car.” Melody chucked
“You’re a nice guy Johan.”
“Thanks, I think you’re nice too.” He said looking away from Melody.
“Melody, I was wondering if-um if you wouldn’t mind. Maybe you’d like to go out for lunch one day. If you’re too busy that’s fine too. Or if it’s too awkward or whatever, you know forget about it. I’m sorry I even—” Melody ended his rambling by pressing her lips t his. It wasn’t until Johan relaxed that she pulled away
“You talk too much, here’s my number.” Melody typed her number into Johan’s phone before walking out of the door.
“Bye Johan.”
“Bye,” Johan responded with a goofy dreamy smile on his face. He closed the door only to be met with Diane standing behind. He yelped in surprise.
"You didn't scare me, I knew you were there."
“I wonder what Dad will think when he finds out.” Daveed sighed heavily
“Are you gonna tell him?”
“Depends, what do I get out of this?”
“CUT! Uh, can we do it again? Tierra you made a face after the kiss.” Tierra walked back through the door and tried to hide the irritation
“I’m sorry, I didn’t even realize.”
“It’s okay, let’s do it again.” And again she did, they had to shoot the scene six times because after the kiss Tierra would frown not a noticeable one but one that was small enough for the directors to notice.
“Is there something the matter, Tierra?”
“It’s just I don’t want to be that person but I know Daveed outside of black-ish and I know he has a lot of intimate partners and I don’t feel comfortable doing a full-on kiss.”
“Okay, we can do a stage kiss for those next few takes. If that’ll make you feel better.”
When they finally got the shot Tierra was the first to head back to her trailer, she heard Daveed call out to her but kept moving forward.
“So you gonna ignore me?” Tierra turned around to face him
“What Daveed? I have to meet with my manager soon.”
“What the fuck was that?”
“What was what?”
“Don’t bull shit me, ‘he has a lot of sexual partners.”
“I think I used the word intimate,”
“Tierra, now they gonna think I just fuck any and everything.”
“But don’t you?” Tierra challenged “I don’t know about you but I don’t whatever those groupies you bring to back to your house on my lips. Goodbye,” Tierra whipped back around and continued to head for her trailer.
After shooting the episode Tierra she had lunch with her manager, Julie. Despite hearing many horror stories, she was actually friends with hers. Tierra met Julie after she posted her third viral video on YouTube. She reached out to Tierra to set up a meeting and the rest is history.
Tierra met Julie at a restaurant not far from her apartment after her long day on set, Tierra needed it.
“So, how was your first day shooting with Daveed?”
"Ugh, I don't want to think about it." She said aggressive stabbing at her food
“Well, I don’t how you’re gonna take this news then,” Julie started
“So, the label wants you to drop another song in addition to the lead single and they want this on the album.”
“Okay, so why is this big news?”
“They want you to record a song with Shaun Da God.”
“The rapper?” Tierra frowned
“Yes, and they want you guys to do it soon so that it can be up for the Grammys.”
“How soon?”
“They want lyrics by the end of the week and record it by next Monday.”
“Excuse me!” Tierra said loudly, someone clearing their throat made them look up and see a couple of nervous teenage girls standing by the table.
“Hi, um we’re so sorry to bother you but can we take a selfie? We’re huge fans.” Tierra gave them a soft smile
“Sure,” The girls quickly posed and took the picture
“Thank you, Tierra, we love you!”
“Aw, love you guys too.”
“Bye,” the girls giggled as they bounced away
“Julie, I can’t write a song that fast. It’s already Wednesday!” Tierra exclaimed
“Look, this would be a great opportunity Tierra. You don’t have an option you’re doing the song with Shaun, actually…” Julie trailed off and looked behind Tierra and waved someone over, Tierra turned and it was Shaun and she assumed his manager. Tierra whipped her head back around, that’s why they were waiting at a booth instead.
“Julie!” Shaun’s manager greeted,
“Hi Russ, long time no see.” The two hugged before Russ took a seat next to Julie and Shaun sat next to Tierra
“Tierra, this is Russell Madison, this man taught me everything I know.” Julie bragged
“Oh, stop Julie. It’s nice to meet you, Tierra. I’m a fan of your music.”
“Thanks, Mr. Madison—”
“Oh, please call me Russ! We’re going to get to know each other very well in these upcoming months.” He smiled,
“Months? I’m confused, I thought it was one song.”
“You didn’t tell her yet?” Russ questioned
“Not yet, I was waiting.”
“Well, first things first, Tierra this is Shaun. I’m sure you know him.”
“Yeah, I’ve listened to his songs. Nice to meet you,” Tierra greeted as nicely as possible
“You too,” Shaun smirked looking at her up and down.
“Alright, now that we all know each other. We’re extremely excited for this collab, since you both write your own lyrics, it should be pretty easy to get the song done by Friday. We want a sexy vibe to the song.” Tierra simply nodded her head, she knew there was one thing else they weren’t telling her.
“This is gonna be great press, especially once we get it recorded and a video, for both of you!” Julie emphasized
“Also, Julie and I were talking. Tierra, we both need you to get yourself out there some more.” Tierra raised an eyebrow slightly offended, she thought she was doing retry good on the social media aspect
“I mean I host lives once a week on Instagram and I’m posting on all of my platforms.”
“Yeah, but you’re averaging only about 200 followers a week we need you higher if you want to be on that Grammy stage next year. So, Russ came up with an idea…”
“We want you and Shaun to date,” Russ said excitedly
“What!”
“Look Tierra, you’re new. Shaun needs good press, especially after that fight in the club, picture it. The R&B good girl and the Rapper Bad Boy. It’s like Ja Rule and Ashanti all over again or better yet, Jay-Z and Beyonce.”
“I don’t think it’s fair that you’re telling me who to date!”
“Look, Tierra how many of these celebrity couples do you think found each other? This is how it works.” Julie explained, Tierra was so surprised that Julie was down for this.
“Dating Shaun will take you from 300K followers to a million. We’ll drop the song first and then tease a relationship. We already have a magazine and social media platform that we’ll send the ‘candid’ pictures to.” Tierra looked at Russ and Julie not convinced then she looked at Shaun who was texting someone on his phone, he wasn’t even contributing to the conversation and they expect her to date him? At least he wasn’t bad to look at. Tierra sighed heavily, she wasn’t going to win this one.
“Fine,”
“To what?” Russ pressed
“To everything, the song, and the relationship.” Russ clasped his hands together
“This calls for a drink! Waiter four glasses of champagne!” A few moments later the four of them were each holding a glass of champagne.
“To new relationships!” They all cheered but Tierra has nothing to celebrate. Julie and Russ snuck out of the restaurant to give Tierra and Shaun time to get to know each other.
“So, you paying for this right?” Shaun asked randomly
“What?”
“You got the bill? I left my wallet at home,”
“Fuck this,” Tierra mumbled as she stood up to leave
“Okay, okay, okay, I’m just fucking with you. I’m not that much of a jackass.” Shaun said grabbing her arm, Tierra rolled her eyes and plopped back down in her seat. There was an awkward silence between the two the sound being the forks clanking against their plates.
“My bad, alright. I was trying to lighten up the mood you ain’t been exactly excited since Russ and Julie left.”
“This is all really new and it’s moving so fast. Three months ago I was living in a studio apartment working at Shake Shack. Now I’m making an album and then this pops up.”
“Okay and? Tierra you gotta get some tough skin if you want to survive in this industry. It ain’t gonna wait for you. I’m telling you they gonna leave your ass at the bus stop.” Tierra knew he was right this is what she wanted so she had to learn how to deal.
“If I’m being honest with you? I don’t want none this fancy-ass bullshit food anyway. Come on,” Shaun placed about $500 on the table and stood up.
“Where we going?”
“We going to my crib, my chef still there he can make us something and we can get started on this song.”
“Right now?”
“Damn you ask a lot of questions,” Shaun teased
“No I don’t, I just wanna know where niggas are taking me. You could be crazy or something.” She joked back
“But you still gonna come with me” He replied with a wink. Tierra stood with a small smile tugging
“Aye, I knew I could get you to smile. Let’s go, my ride already outside.” Shaun held his hand out and Tierra tentatively grabbed it, following him outside. When they got outside they were met with a small group of paparazzi clicking away at their expensive cameras.
“Shaun! Who’s that with you?”
“Shaun do you have a new girlfriend?”
“What’s your name sweetheart?”
“Shaun, how long have you been dating her?”
Tierra kept her head low as they walked from the restaurant to the backseat of Shaun’s car. She’s experienced paparazzi before but nothing like this. They were asking ten different questions at the same time and the flashing lights of the cameras were too much. Now she gets why they cover their face, not because they don’t want to be on camera but they don’t want the lights on their faces. Shaun noticed how quiet she was being the entire car ride and tapped her
“You good?”
“Yeah, it was a lot at one time.” He nodded, understanding
“I feel you, you’ll get used to it, especially once you get on a red carpet.” After about a thirty-minute car ride they pulled up to Shaun’s LA mansion. Tierra didn’t want to seem too starstruck but this is the biggest house she’s ever seen.
Walking into the massive mansion Tierra was met with white marble floors and white walls. It was beautiful but if this were her house there would definitely be more color.
“My boy, Kenny in the kitchen. You like tacos?”
“Uh, yeah,” Tierra said still trying to grasp that this was real life. Shaun led her into the kitchen where his chef, Kenny was putting his finishing touches on the dinner.
“‘Sup Shaun?”
“What’s good Kenny? Aye, good looking out.”
“You know I got you, who this?” Kenny asked referring to Tierra
“Oh, this Tierra, she a friend,” Shaun said
“Nice to meet you,” Tierra said politely
“You too, hopefully, I get to see more of you. I made y’all some tacos.”
“It looks delicious,” Tierra could smell the food as soon as she stepped into the house, she couldn’t wait to try it.
“Can you bring it down to the studio? We working on a song.”
“Aight,” Shaun grabbed Tierra’s hand and led her down the hall to an elevator. He chuckled at her face when they approached the gold elevator.
She knew was rich but damn, he got an elevator in his house? Not because he needed one, but he just wanted it. Seeing Shaun’s studio made hers look like a broom closet which it essentially was compared to his. She saw the various awards lined up on a shelf all of the hits that when gold, platinum, and even diamond were adorned on the walls of the studio. The one thing that really impressed her was the all-white baby grand piano that sat in the middle of the room.
“You play?”
“Since I was a kid,” Shaun walked over to the soundboard “my parents put me in classes and it just stuck with me. I try to play every now and then.”
“Wow, I never knew that about you.”
“There’s a lot of things people don’t know about me. All these tabloids think I’m just some rapper who fights all the time.” Tierra felt slightly guilty, she assumed that he was some arrogant jerk who f ten girls a week.
“Well, let’s get to know each other. First, what’s your name because I’m not calling you Shaun Da God.” He laughed
“Okay, okay that’s fair. My name is Marvin,”
“What?”
“Shaun’s my middle name, Russ didn’t think Marvin was a nice rap name.”
“For this one, Imma have to agree with Russ.”
“Damn, you too?”
“I’m just saying,” She chuckled
“Chill, chill, it’s a family name.”
“Well, I think I like it better than Shaun,”
Hours went by and Tierra and Shauna hadn’t even started writing the song, they were genuinely having a good time getting to know one another in the privacy of Shaun’s home, not a club or a fancy Michelin star restaurant.
“Stop playin, you don’t know how to roll.”
“Let me prove it to you.”
“Shit, you ain’t gotta tell me twice.” Shaun left the studio for a few minutes and returned with everything Tierra needed and in less than five minutes, she rolled two perfect blunts.
“Damn, TeeTee you wasn’t lying,” Shaun said taking a hit
“I told you,” Tierra found herself staring at Shaun. When she first met him earlier she thought he was cute but she never really looked at him. Tierra bit her lip as she squeezed her thighs together, he looked like Daniel from insecure and Trevante Rhodes combined. She wasn’t sure if it was the weed and the alcohol or the fact that her vibrator betrayed her again this morning but she could feel her arousal growing. Shaun started absentmindedly messing with the soundboard fooling around with different beats.
“Ay, TeeTee!” Shaun called out to her she jumped hoping he didn’t notice her staring.
“Yeah,”
“You good?”
“Uh yeah, I ain’t never smoked this kind of weed.” She lied “Y’all rich people got that expensive shit.” Tierra played off
“Yeah, that rich people shit way stronger. Get in the booth real quick let’s see what we come up with.”
It was now almost 3 AM and Tierra doesn’t remember how she and Shaun got here. Maybe they’ve had too many drinks or smoked too much weed but here she is back laid out on the sofa. Shaun on top of her, his hand sliding into her shorts.
“Can you take three?” Shaun asked before his lips attacked her neck again. Tierra nodded, her brain too foggy to form words. She gasped when he plunged three of his fingers into her, his thumb rubbing tiny circles on her clit. Tierra pulled away from him to moan aloud.
“Shit,” She breathed out, grinding down onto his fingers. Tierra’s orgasm was coming whether she liked it or not. It didn’t take her long not with the way Shaun’s fingers were digging her out. Just as she was about to come he stopped suddenly and pulled his fingers out. She was about protest but he lifted her legs up and pushed her knees to her chest.
She almost screamed when Shaun started to suck on her clit. He laps at her pussy, her moans caught in her throat. Shaun buries his face even deeper, his tongue tasting everything Tierra has to offer.
”Oh fuck, Shaun!” Tierra shouted as she came on Shaun’s tongue.
Shaun let her legs go, Tierra sat up trying to regain her breath.
“That was, um…wow.” Tierra crawled over to him and kissed him. She put her hands under his shirt feeling his abs and pulled his shirt off. Her hands traveled down to his pants and she reached inside them but grabbed her hands. She sat back on her knees.
“You don’t have to do that Tierra,”
“I’m sorry is this not what—”
“No, it is. I just ain’t want you to feel pressured.”
“No I want to, do you not want me to?”
“I do want you to, only if you want to, you know, do it.”
“Shaun, do you want me to suck your dick or not?”
Tierra made it back to her apartment at seven in the morning. Luckily, she didn’t have an episode to shoot today, and not until next week when they shoot the finale. She walked into her apartment and headed straight for her shower and then a nice long nap before hitting the gym.
When she was leaving to go to the gym she got a text from Shaun, she blushed before quickly replying and continued walking to the gym.
When Tierra got to the gym, she mentally cheered there was no one in there. She headed straight for the treadmill she liked and started her workout. With her AirPods in she couldn’t hear if anyone walked into the gym it also didn’t help that the treadmill was facing away from the door.
Tierra wasn’t keeping track of time when she got off the treadmill and turned to leave she practically jumped out of her skin when saw Daveed standing at the door.
“You know it’s rude to stare, creep.” She commented taking a sip from her water bottle.
“Please, don’t flatter yourself. I wasn’t staring at you, I was waiting for the treadmill until you were done, like a normal fucking person.” Tierra rolled her eyes and walked past him.
“You know there are two treadmills in here.” Daveed pointed to the one next o her and there was an “Out of Order” sign taped to it.
“Whatever, it’s all yours.” Daveed shook his head he walked up to the treadmill and saw traces of her sweet still on the machine.
“Ay, can you wipe your sweat off the machine?”
“Fuck no. Enjoy!” Tierra flipped him off as she left
