WHAT an interesting idea. that puts martin at arsenal in 2015, catching santi aaron and MESUT as mentors…….genuinely think that would’ve been incredible for his development. especially because and it gives me psychic damage to say this i think arsenal would’ve seen him as a sort of spiritual successor to jack wilshere. so you have a martin who spends his formative teen years in a stable environment but under wenger’s dying tenure, who’s had to fend for himself a lot less because his development has been very carefully overseen, who i think becomes a bearer of hope for the older squad members as they age out and a figure of authority for the younger ones (gabi, wilo etc) as they join arsenal in a period of uncertainty. i think by emery’s stint it’s only slightly wishful thinking to say martin has become sort of arsenal’s golden son (20yo, classic wenger signing, 5 years w the club, wilshere-esque regen with a crazy work ethic).
to absolutely no one’s surprise mikel and him take to each other like a duck to water lol partially because i think since martin joined arsenal it’s sort of been a frustrating, directionless journey—and then here comes mikel, WHO MARTIN WOULD HAVE PLAYED UNDER FOR A YEAR. this just dealt me even more psychic damage. the mikel/martin relationship gains so many more layers once you consider martin’s first year at the club would’ve been mikel’s last year i’m going to throw up. your captain who’s so much older and not quite good enough but still your captain and he COMES BACK and he’s your COACH now and he has a clarity you never saw in him back then and he promises it’s all going to be up from here. of course you think you see him now for who he truly is (but you won’t! not until you’re even older.) of course, before you even know what it is, you’re in love with him.
so once auba falls out i think we get a martin captaincy earlier, and the mikel-granit-martin trio is even deeper than it is in canon because this version of martin was there for granit’s rise and fall….me and my homoerotically ambiguous relationship with my teammate who’s six years older than me. king-prince-bodyguard i’m going to THROW UP.
of course this is all necessary to set up a proper odericevertz. it’s very interesting because this means odekai lose their similar backstories—martin can’t understand kai’s predicament: his first shot worked out, and all the bobbles along the way only entrenched him deeper into arsenal’s dna. unburdened by all the canon pressure he carries i think martin is harder to like for kai—but easier to like for declan, who when faced with a martin/bukayo who are the literal sons of arsenal wouldn’t even dream of challenging that authority in any way, who sees martin as someone to tease and push/pull around and ultimately submit to, who sees the granit right-hand-man role is vacant and leans hard into it: he becomes the loyal joking attack dog. oderice in this fall together so easily that they’re less complicated but still stupidly compelling.
meanwhile i think (unlike canon!) odekai eventually get there bc martin is trying so hard to make sure kai settles in (out of duty, but also personal interest) that he’s reluctantly endeared by his efforts. so you end up with a sort of inverse of canon, where in kai’s case it matters so much that it’s this homegrown golden boy captain who’s the one trying to reel him in, and with declan it doesn’t matter because these are the roles they play and fall so easily into anyway. funnily enough it’s kai who keeps making it hard for martin on purpose just to see what happens, and it’s declan who’s fonder of martin and becomes the intermediary between them. and the power imbalance obviously is still a point of friction between declan and kai but in a way kai is actively contributing so it loses a bit of its bite.

your new fic is so beautifully poetic and vivid with imagery and emotions and dialogue that says so much without saying much. the scene with granit where martin feels he’s reopening an old wound.. ouch. a million kudos to you. i think im a little lost on the order of the relationships, is it established deckai, casual oderice, and then tentative odericevertz by the end? is there a hierarchy or are they all just fooling around and being messy?

i am CRAZY about all the sides of the odericevertz triangle. there’s a whole universe of lore in my head for how they got together. in the fic they’re technically established relationship in that they are well into it, but there has been 0 communication about What They Are……How The Pairs Function….etc etc. here’s my very very long take on how they end up the way they are in the fic:
- dec/kai start being teammates with benefits when they both join arsenal. the pull is rooted in mutual fascination at first (more attraction/secondhand curiosity from only ever knowing him through mason on kai’s side. in comparison declan wants to get a rise out of him, wants to see what the awkwardness morphs into when kai gets good.) the power balance is definitely kind of fucked in the start because declan is doing so much better so there’s an undertone of pity for a while but they both have no complaints about it and the imbalance resolves itself once kai starts coming good as the season rolls on
- meanwhile martin/kai are striking up a budding friendship that’s v much based in tenderness. martin sets out to take care of kai because they’ve got similar backgrounds (see: mikel’s i can fix him complex) + captain duties given kai’s price tag and history etc and ends up liking him a lot more than he expects. kai feels the same…..a tangle of admiration fondness desire etc. martin literally sets up his path to redemption by giving him the fucking penalty against bournemouth. i feel crazy.
- (in true arsenal fashion this is complicated by how mikel tells martin to handle kai at the start of the season and granit aka kai initially being viewed as a xhaka replacement at LCM. that is another fic.)
- so this ode/kai and dec/kai tracks are running parallel as the season develops……..meanwhile MARTIN/DECLAN. EVEN more complicated to me. some fans saying that declan would make a better captain than martin……him having a more traditional captain’s personality/physicality than martin…….fitting in so well and being so universally adored so quickly….HIM SAYING HE’D LOVE THE CAPTAINCY IF ANYTHING HAPPENED TO MARTIN…….there is something very sharp and hungry about declan below the affable nice guy act. i love that.
- tldr the martin/declan tension resolves itself in dubai where declan finally acknowledges martin as captain and then they fuck. i have the scene pictured in my head. kai is relieved as hell.
- so before the end of 23/24 (aka before the fic starts) they have definitely all slept together before and are starting to fall into a familiar dynamic. unfortunately the nature of football is that everything is fleeting……the dynamic changes from season to season and the loss complicates that more. i don’t think there is any universe where declan joins odekai in ibiza because he is simply not the kind of person to go and try and forget about such a massive loss right after it happens. i conceive of him as a very solitary creature……social only by habit and extremely selective with who he shows vulnerability to. offscreen he spends a week by himself processing and then proceeds to throw himself into the next challenge (euros). this works as a distraction mostly because england nt is full of young hungry people who are also his friends…….england nt fic. now there’s a thought.
- only once england lose the final and there is literally nothing else to contend with other than the reality of losing x2 does declan allow kai to bring him around etc. phone call scene, after which deckai DO talk about the team the game the season etc but not about the relationship. fun fact as i mentioned to holdinghistorsogently in the dms is that they WOULD have talked about all of this with martin…….but in that moment martin can’t stand listening to this casual intimacy that he’s excluded from through no fault of his and cuts himself off first. this guy is so good at quiet self-destruction
- anyway anon to answer you i don’t think there is a hierarchy. to me their dynamic is one where they’re just as likely to go home together in a pair and the last one is going to have feelings of varying intensity about it depending on who it is. they are never going to talk about it everrrr because they just don’t work like that…. they are definitely at their most balanced and happiest IN the trio dynamic, but i don’t think they’ve reached the stage where they’ll instinctively default to the trio dynamic yet. life if they communicated 🕊️
- (important to note that the deckai in this fic is filtered heavily through martin's pov so we get a more surface-level perspective of their relationship than i'd like, but martin is right in that i think they have a sort of playfulness that martin doesn't have with either of them by virtue of being captain.)
excited to see how this shifts and evolves in the coming season though. and each individual side of this triangle on its own is still very compelling to me.
