PLOT POINTS
I. The Rowles rejoiced over the birth of their first and only son, Thorfinn. Here was a wizard to carry on the familyās legacyānot only in name, but in deed and achievement. Thorfinn grew up proud of his surname, proud of his familyās history, proud to be not only one of them, but trusted so easily with their future. It was a responsibility he took seriously until he didnāt. Expectations got in the way of fun, and Thorfinn liked fun infinitely more. When Mr. Rowle announced his plan to open his own law firm, Thorfinn scoffed. Ignoring his fatherās plans to make him his partner, he cleaned out his trust fund and took off, travelling the world with friends even less responsible than him. Now well traveled, still uncultured, and completely broke, Thorfinn has come crawling back home, ready to wave the white flag and take on all that his father had prepared for him before he left. Finding Usi Mulciber in the office that was meant to be his, and a long list of tasks to complete in order to earn his Dark Mark has been a wake up call, though Thorfinn is half-convinced heās still living in a nightmare.
II.Ā Though the weight of his riches were wasted on parties and travel fees (and luxuries, of course), another portion of Thorfinnās trust fund was depleted by a wicked hobby: gambling. Thorfinn isnāt particularly unlucky; in fact, when looking back on his record, one would find that heās done marginally better than breaking even. Thorfinnās problem, like with every other knut heās ever spent, is that he gambles in absurdly extravagant quantities. The straw that broke the camelās back and sent Thorfinn back home was a recent game of craps with Ludo Bagman. Once Thorfinn begins to make his own money, heās got every intention of showing Ludo what heās made of and who the real winner isāall in good fun, of course.
OTHER CONNECTIONS
Ramsey Shafiq: Fun-loving isnāt a trait thatās easily cultivated unless thereās someone to share it with. Growing up, for Thorfinn, that person was Ramsey Flint. Though they were in different houses, the pair really found each other, as they say, during their Hogwarts years. From elaborate trips over the summer holidays, to drunken parties and card tournaments in the little known Room of Requirement throughout the school year, Thorfinn and Ramsey made their fair share of memories (most of which they donāt actually remember, at least not accurately). Since Thorfinnās return from his time abroad, the biggest adjustment in settling down into adulthood is seeing whatās become of his friends who have already made that change. Seeing Ramsey work his nine-to-five every day, and watching him tote a toddler around on his hip after hours, has been the ultimate culture shock for the party boy. Last Thorfinn checked, though, parenthood doesnāt have to be synonymous with boring, and heās dead set on reminding Ramsey of exactly that.
Vivien Travers: Despite busying himself with his regular mischievousness, Thorfinn remembers hearing whisperings about the terrible state of Tobias Travers and his family. The gossip first started with comments about Tobiasās paraplegia, apparently beyond any magical repair. Then came the talks of the Traversā lost fortune, and how they were barely above begging on the streets. Naturally, Thorfinn had far more captivating interests than listening to busybodies, so he blocked all such gossip. It wasnāt until the Boxing Day Ball in 1972, that Tobias Traversā family caught his attentionāin the form of his only child, Vivien. While only seventeen at the time, her mere presence commanded Thorfinnās attention. He silenced the gossip he heard about how āterribly plain and cheapā her robes looked, and approached to ask for a dance, to which she accepted. After the night concluded, Thorfinnās mother berated him, explaining that rubbing elbows with Tobias Traversās daughter would do nothing good for his reputation. Thorfinn initially disregarded his motherās stern advice; for the early part of 1973, he and Vivien exchanged letters. During the summer of that year, Thorfinn began bringing her to the various places he went to gamble. He taught her everything, and it didnāt take long for Vivien to become infatuated and talented with the many games. As the summer waned, his affection for the witch grew; however, his motherās warning from months before began to sting. By autumn, Thorfinn had parted for his many travels. The two exchanged letters here and there, but by the time Vivien married Piers Gamp, all communication between the pair ended. Now back in the U.K. and undeniably broke, Thorfinn has heard through the grapevine that Ā Vivien is penniless one again and widowed, and he considers contacting her. After all, how can she ruin his already damaged reputation?
