BACKGROUND.

Blitzbang and their older sibling, Starbright, were brought to the academy when they were just about to enter their secondary school years, so they remember normal life, but the thought of it is distant and hazy. They loved growing up in a beautiful manor surrounded by friends. but what they remember more than anything was how grueling training was and no matter how hard they tried, it was never good enough for the headmaster, who favored Starbright in all categories. But Blitzbang is still trying to prove themselves even now that the headmaster has passed.

POWERS.

With the snap of their fingers, Blitzbang can generate small localized sonic explosions. These explosions have no heat or fire, and instead are a pure burst of sound waves which can knock back opponents. Blitzbang often uses them to rupture the ear drums or break the ribs of their enemies. The explosions cannot be generated inside of someone or something, and the target area must be in sight. Depending on the strength of the snap, the explosion can even break the sound barrier. these bursts are powerful and dangerous, but can cause extreme collateral damage to allies.

PERSONALITY.

Blitzbang likes to pretend like nothing bothers them. they are able to shrug everything with a witty rejoinder or quick snip. They are fantastically clever and use their intelligence to get out of most desperate situations. Employing fast-talking confusion they can avoid a fight. That’s how they prefer to play it: words before fists. They also like to pretend that they don’t care about their family and that their childhood meant nothing to them. But in moments of threat the truth shines through. They would do anything to protect their siblings. But Blitzbang just refuses to admit that they feel anything deeply.  

CONNECTIONS.

STARBRIGHT - Blitzbang knows that Starbright has always thought of them as a burden, and Blitzbang has been fighting all their life to change that. But now that they’re both adults and nothing has changed, Blitzbang doesn’t know what they can do. Maybe they are just doomed to be the family fuck up forever, but Blitzbang wants to prove to their older sibling that they don’t need to worry anymore. Every time they try to show off their maturity they just end up looking like more of a fool. 

REAP - When Blitzbang first saw Reap pouting and moping around the academy, they swore they would make it their mission to cheer up that grump. And while they were never as successful as they would like, and it seemed like only Sew could bring a real smile to Reap’s face, Blitzbang never stopped trying. Even now, on special occasions, Blitzbang will reach out to Reap in the hopes of bringing a little extra joy into their life. 

ZEPHYR - Blitzbang met Zephyr in London a few years ago purely by coincidence. Zephyr was chasing down a pickpocket, and when Blitzbang saw them in their old mask they couldn’t help but laugh. After a few minutes of verbal sparring and threats from Zephyr, the two realized that they were actually having fun. Ever since they’ve been good friends in secret. They both like to tease each other and pretend that at any moment they’ll duel to the death, but they’ve actually grown to love each other over the years.

BACKGROUND.

Charmer joined the academy very shortly after it went public, so they narrowly missed the window to be a part of the core five frontrunners. But they didn’t let that stop them from garnering attention. They liked the idea of being a celebrity and using their powers to stand out from the crowd. So when the team dissolved and everyone went their separate ways, Charmer decided to follow their fame from being a hero to other media ventures and have been moderately successful. They’re hoping their big break come soon.

POWERS.

Charmer has two distinct mutant abilities. The first is quite subtle, but they can release a pheromone they attracts people to them. The person will become entranced and attempt to approach Charmer, lost in a haze of reverence and awe. The other ability Charmer has is that with eye contact they can prompt a feeling of vertigo. The target will feel the world start to spin around them, and they will feel dizzy to a point of incapacitation. They sustained eye contact the target may experience extreme nausea. 

PERSONALITY.

Charmer is a naturally vain and self-absorbed person, which is no surprise because of their natural good looks. They have the capacity for pure, selfless altruism, but it doesn’t come as naturally to them as it does to the others at the academy. They love passionately and protect fiercely, but it takes a long time for them to warm up to people. They also tend to hold a grudge and can be very petty. If they decide that they don’t like someone, it takes a lot of convincing for them to come around and not treat the other person with venom and disdain. 

CONNECTIONS.

TRIDENT - Charmer isn’t a naïve person, so they were always aware of how Trident felt about them. While Charmer was flattered by the notion of a teammate having a crush on them, they never requited the feeling and marked it off as something to laugh at in private company. Charmer is convinced that if Trident ever got to know the real them, they would immediately lose any and all remaining feelings of love or attraction. So Charmer tries to keep a distance. 

STARBRIGHT - Charmer and Starbright were friends during their days at the academy, and while they never talked about deeper feelings or fears, it was a much needed retreat for Charmer. The relationship felt so normal, and in those moments that they were together, Charmer could convince themselves that they were just normal young adults. They know it was vapid but they are so grateful for that time. but it seems like Stabright regrets their time together, since it’s obvious that Starbright has been avoiding Charmer since the academy disbanded. Charmer wants to tell themselves it doesn’t hurt to be discarded like that, even if it was a shallow friendship. More than anything. they just wonder why they aren’t good enough to be in Starbright’s current life. 

SEW - Charmer would die for Sew, without hesitation. Sew is the only person Charmer has ever known who took the time to ask Charmer real questions about their feelings and life. So many people were interested in the idea of Charmer, but disappointed by the reality. But Sew always understood, listened, and accepted. Charmer knew that if they weren’t careful they could consume Sew, and Sew wouldn’t protest. So Charmer made a point of never asking too much of their friend. More than that, they made it their purpose to protect Sew from people who would see Sew’s kindness as a weakness to be exploited. Charmer’s scared off plenty of selfish people that Sew doesn’t even know about. 

MR. MOE (NPC)

BACKGROUND.

Mr. Moe’s mutant abilities did not appear until much later than is typical. He was in his late twenties and working as a high school Biology and Chemistry teacher when his transformation began. He attempted to control his transformations by himself for a few years, but eventually he had to go on the run because the government discovered his true identity. He took refuge with The Headmaster, and together they worked to fulfil Harold’s dream of The Oculus Academy.  For nearly two decades, Mr. Moe was one of the teachers at The Oculus Academy and Harold’s right hand man.

POWERS.

His mutation caused him to transform into a beastial creature whenever his emotions got out of control. The creature was extremely dangerous: fast, strong, and bearing long claws and sharp teeth. He was often compared to a werewolf. His hulking stature and glowing eyes struck fear into anyone who saw him, and he was virtually unkillable due to sheer size and a rage-fueled resistance to pain. The most common triggers for transformation were grief and anger, but he was in very good control of his powers by the time any students joined the academy. In a way, he was The Headmaster’s first unofficial student. He uses his powers for demonstration and self-defense now.

PERSONALITY.

Mr. Moe is the softer and more empathetic counterpart to Harold. He served as counselor and teacher to the children, but seemed more like a fun-uncle. He always listened to them and gave them the opportunities to have fun with their powers. He was extremely well-loved by the students. He is quite self-deprecating and doesn’t mind jokes being made at his expense. He’s humble and affable; recognizing the ironic duality in his temperament that separates him from his monstrous counterpart.  

CONNECTIONS.

GORGON - Mr. Moe only ever met Gorgon in passing and most of what he knows about Gorgon is from what he could pry out of Harold. Mr. Moe is smart enough to piece together that there is more to the story than Harold ever felt comfortable divulging and Mr. Moe, while curious, never overstepped boundaries. So his dislike for Gorgon is purely professional. Mr. Moe doesn’t agree with Gorgon or their methods, but he would be kind and respectful if the two were to ever properly meet. 

THE HEADMASTER - Harold and Mr. Moe were best friends for all of their adult life. While they never shared much with each other about their personal lives, the two would often have long conversations about philosophy, literature, history, and politics. They got along very well and Mr. Moe was glad to have someone in his life that didn’t fear him or treat him like a wild animal. Harold helped Mr. Moe achieve control, and it was in large part due tot he amount of dignity Harold treated Mr. Moe with. The only time Mr. Moe in the past twenty years that he has slipped and unintentionally transformed was upon hearing of Harold’s passing. Now, Mr. Moe is lost in grief and shame. 

BLOODHOUND - Bloodhound is something of a mystery to Mr. Moe. She is a rumor that Mr. Moe heard whispers of but never fully believed. Mr. Moe both fears and admires the idea of a mutant who can track down other mutants. And Mr. Moe understands that if those abilities ever fell into the wrong hands they could be used to catastrophic ends. More than anything, Mr. Moe hopes that Bloodhound remains a distant figure in his life, because he worries that misfortune follows this woman. 

BLADEBENDER

BACKGROUND

Bladebender discovered their powers at a very young age and was horrified by them so they tried to keep them a secret. Fortunately, their powers weren’t very apparent. So they were able to keep them hidden for over a year. It wasn’t until their mother’s life was in danger that they revealed themselves as a mutant. Less than a week later they were sent to The Oculus Academy, and joined as the second student. While at the academy they trained and soon assumed the role of leader of the team. They took that responsibility seriously and led many successful missions, in addition to being one of the two poster children for the academy.

POWERS.

Bladebender has minor ferrokinesis, meaning that they can move metal telekinetically. But the limitation is that they cannot lift anything with their mind that they wouldn’t be able to lift with their body. So they can’t lift planes or crush cars. They’ve developed their ability to specifically focus on projectile manipulation. So they can deflect or redirect bullets or knives. They tend to send the weapon right back at the adversary. they are also a highly competent tactician, leader, and they are trained in martial arts and various weaponry. They also have their pilot’s and motorcycle license. 

PERSONALITY.

Despite their stubbornness, self-righteousness, and extreme need for approval from the headmaster, Bladebender is a great leader. Their fierce loyalty to the team and a ‘no one gets left behind’ means that everyone can at least respect their dedication to the team. They are kind, but have difficulties being vulnerable and expressing their feelings. They are insecure and reserved, only taking the time to shine when they are putting on a show. they can play the role of charismatic poster-child, but when they step out of the spotlight they tend to stay quiet and brood. 

CONNECTIONS.

ARCADE - Arcade has been Bladebender’s guiding light ever since they first saw Arcade. Arcade’s grace and poise always left Bladebender feelings breathless. With time Bladebender was able to work up the confidence to talk to Arcade and the two of them grew to be close friends. Arcade was Bladebender’s partner on missions and PR stunts, and Bladebender couldn’t ask for anyone better to be at their side. When the academy disbanded and Arcade moved on with their life so easily, Bladebender was glad they could be there to witness it. Bladebender just wishes they could still be Arcade’s right hand like they used to be. 

REAP - When Reap first came to academy Bladebender saw nothing but an unworthy usurper who’d come to threatened the position they’d worked so hard for. Bladebender hated Reap and took any opportunity to put up a fight when they suggested something in even vague opposition to Bladebender’s leadership. Bladebender even punched Reap once. But they’ve both grown up, and Bladebender feels silly for their pettiness. Granted, if Reap was to stand up to Bladebender now and challenge them, they don’t know how they’d respond. 

TRIDENT - Trident was a total thorn in Bladebender’s side for so many years. Bladebender knew that Trident meant well, but that didn’t stop them from being a nuisance everytime they rushed into battle without listening to the plan or got into a fight without a good reason. As the leader, Bladebender hated Trident. But as a friend, Bladebender respected Trident’s heart and passion. It was easy to see they both wanted the same thing: to do right by the academy. 

THE HEADMASTER

BACKGROUND.

Born to a family of wealthy British socialites, Harold’s early life was as blessed as one could possibly picture. When he turned twenty two he took over the family business, Prism, which sold eyeglasses and contact lenses. After twelve years of running the business he handed responsibility over to the board of directors and declared that he would be starting an academy for mutant children. On that day he also revealed himself to be a mutant. He was the Headmaster of The Oculus Academy for about two decades.  His main objective was peace between humans and mutants.

POWERS. 

Harold was able to summon dark matter at will. He could create it in the palm of his hand and control it. Like a miniature, malleable black hole, it could consume anything it came into contact with. The dark matter was freezing to the touch, and worked like a portal to a void dimension. Anything that got too close to the dark matter would be pulled in and instantly disappear. If left active for too long it would pull all of the heat and  oxygen out of the room. Harold never created a void larger than a baseball for this reason. He only used his abilities to prove to other mutants he was one of them and that control was possible.

PERSONALITY.

Harold was an old-fashioned man, he prided himself on restraint and diplomacy. For the safety and well-being of his students there were many rules set in place, and while he’d be willing to hear out any argument, his stubbornness and ability to guilt-trip made it so that his students often didn’t voice their dissent to him without prompting. However, he was extremely forgiving and always gave people another chance, since he always saw the best in people. Overall, he was regarded as a wise, kind, and fair person, but out of touch with reality due to his privilege. 

CONNECTIONS.

MR. MOE - Mr. Moe was a friend to Harold for many decades. They met shortly after Harold revealed his powers to the world, and in a way, Mr. Moe was Harold’s first student at the academy. However, Harold appointed Mr. Moe as a teacher and counselor as soon as Mr. Moe achieved control over his abilities. The two were good friends and always respected each other’s opinions. Harold loved Mr. Moe like a brother and the two were content managing the academy together. 

GORGON - The relationship between Gorgon and The Headmaster, aka Hollis and Harold, was complicated to say the least. They met in the early eighties and Hollis was the first person Harold showed his powers to. they dated for a few years, but broke up due to a difference in opinion over whether or not they should work with the government. Over time their views polarized more and more, until it felt like they were on opposing sides of the fight they’d started. When Harold announced the Academy and Gorgon responded by adopting children, the two started to compete for the power to sway the next generation of mutants to their cause. They two still loved and cared for each other, despite their differences, but were too stubborn to compromise. 

BLOODHOUND - Harold always felt a bitter distaste towards Bloodhound. Part of it was due to jealousy, of course, seeing his ex with another person. But his dislike for Bloodhound was mostly due to the fact that Bloodhound was vocally anti-human and spread the belief that all humans hated and feared mutants, which Harold fundamentally disagreed with. The two never really interacted in person, but the hearsay was enough to fuel resentment between the two. 

SEW

BACKGROUND.

Sew was the last person to join the academy. It took them far longer to figure out that they had superpowers than the average mutant. For a long time they just thought that healing was supposed to happen quickly and that all of their injuries were minor. It wasn’t until a member of one of their high school sports teams broke a bone during practice that they realized they had a special gift. So they never felt like one of the insiders or a true member of The Oculus Academy, since they don’t have that history with the team.

POWERS.

Sew has the most generic of all of the powers: they can heal themselves at will. They can regenerate tissue and bone rapidly in order to return to their original form. They cannot regrow entire limbs and are missing a finger. So being decapitated or crushed completely would result in their death. However, it is extremely difficult to kill them because of their regenerative ability. They, like the rest of the academy, are also any extremely well-trained martial artist and having proficiencies in most melee weapons.

PERSONALITY.

Sew is the most helpful person on the planet. They treat being self-sacrificing as their superpower. They are fiercely loyal to their found family and determined to prove that they have value even if their powers bring nothing but pain. They never complain and always go out of their way to make their siblings smile. The others don’t see how isolated and shunned Sew is feeling on the inside. It’s hard to tell since Sew never complains and instead tries to bring a silver lining to their situation. They make everyone’s business their own and are quite nosey, even annoying. They just want to be useful.    

CONNECTIONS.

REAP - When Reap first arrived at the Academy, Sew’s heart immediately went out to them. as a naturally empathetic person, Sew couldn’t resist the opportunity to help them out. It just so happened that their powers perfectly lined up so that Reap couldn’t permanently damage them. So they trained together, and Reap would break them apart and then they’d grow back to normal. Over time, Sew lost the ability to feel pain and now they can regenerate from a broken bone in a matter of minutes. But more importantly, they’ve grown to love Reap. The two have been practically inseparable for the past decade; feeling like they complete each other. 

ARCADE - Sew can see that Arcade doesn’t like them. Sew knows that as one of the last few people to join the academy, it only made sense for the original members to be hesitant. But after so many years Sew wishes Arcade would get past their paranoia and accept Sew as part of the family. It hurts their feelings to be rejected over and over again by the second in command who they looked up to for so long. But it doesn’t look like Arcade’s feeling are ever going to change, no matter how much Sew might want them to. 

CHARMER - Charmer was Sew’s first friend at the academy and they still are quite close. They know that Charmer isn’t always the most kind person, and they could easily take advantage of Sew’s giving nature. But so far Charmer has been nothing but respectful and has actually defended Sew from people who would capitalize on Sew’s bleeding heart. Sew loves Charmer and appreciates that they have someone so strong-willed and loyal in their corner. 

REAP

BACKGROUND.

Reap was one of the last students to join the academy and it’s likely that they were the reason that the headmaster didn’t take on many more pupils. They were a frustrating case, both because of their personality and their powers. If not for the arrival of Sew, Reap may have been a total failure. For many years before joining the academy, Reap was on the run and had no family. They traveled across the country to get to the academy in the hopes of finding peers among the other mutants. But they arrived too late to ever really be considered a part of the core team and always existed on the outside.

POWERS.

Reap’s powers are grotesque in a way that makes them very difficult to train. Reap has the ability to manipulate bone. So they can break someone’s bones with a snap of their fingers. As a result, they never used their powers unless it was in self-defense. It was only when they met Sew that they were able to develop their abilities and learn greater control and precision.

PERSONALITY.

Reap is full of rage and bitterness. Their hatred for every part of their childhood fuels them to try and make everyone else forget their origin by trying to be the antithesis of what is expected of them. However, they are prone to competition and aggression, and nothing upsets them more than when someone points that out. But Reap is also very loyal and passionate. They are a reliable friend and ally, and will do anything to protect the people they love. They are slow to trust but they love very deeply.  

CONNECTIONS.

SEW - Sew was a godsend for Reap, and they see their partner as nothing less than a savior and an angel. they arrived when Reap felt hopeless, and was considering leaning into a life of darkness and violence or no life at all. But Sew didn’t fear them, and instead, offered them a way to become a effective hero. the two also got along very well, and quickly became thick as thieves. They’d retreat off to the corner and create inside jokes. Even as the group disbanded, they never grew apart and they’ve made a nice life together.

BLADEBENDER - The two have been at each other’s throats since day one. Bladebender always wanted to keep Reap off the team; saying that they were too ‘dangerous to themselves and others’. The two would constantly bicker and argue, butting heads over simple things and how the team should go about missions. Bladebender would always pull rank, and it would drive Reap up the wall. With hindsight, Reap has come to understand that they were both just kids trying their best. But it doesn’t take much more than a impolite word from Bladebender to spark old feelings in Reap.

BLITZBANG - Blitzbang was the only team member to immediately welcome Reap when they arrived at the academy. Blitzbang didn’t worry about their powers causing pain and instead acted like they were the same despite their very different abilities. It was as heartwarming as it was grating. Reap appreciated Blitzbang’s tenacity and determination to be their friend, but at times the naivety and relentlessness was annoying. Whenever Blitzbang sends gifts on the holidays or sings a silly voicemail on Reap’s birthday, Reap can’t help but smile with fondness.

ARCADE

BACKGROUND.

Arcade was the first student at the academy, being taken in when they were only ten years old. As a result, they were trained to be one of the leaders of the group. But they never wanted to be in charge, so they took up the role of second-in-command after Bladebender. They were one of the faces of the team, and were often sent to represent the academy at conferences, political meetings, and important social gatherings. Arcade was the poster-child for the academy, and all mutants.

POWERS.

Arcade has a unique psychic power. They can lull people into a hypnotic state. In that state, the person is catatonic and cannot be reached until they are released because their mind is elsewhere. Arcade generates a palatable mindscape wherein the entranced can talk, and even fight, without any risk of hurting each other. In the mindscape time passes differently, so a conversation that lasts hours can take seconds in the real world. Arcade primarily uses this power to neutralize any threats and talk them down from their anger before they can do any significant damage.

PERSONALITY.

Arcade was the perfect example for the rest of the Oculus team. They were obedient, graceful, kind, well-spoken, and diplomatic. They favored talking our issues to fighting, and uses their powers with restraint and benevolence. They had to maintain an appearance of perfection, knowing that their every move would be scrutinized. So no matter how rude or aggressive people were towards them, they had to remain calm and classy. Underneath, they were bitter and angry, but they never expressed it. Now they tend to bite back if they are taunted enough, but they still practice extreme caution.

CONNECTIONS.

SEW - Arcade and Sew never got the chance to bond when they were growing up. And Arcade was slow to trust anyone. To this day, Arcade isn’t sure that Sew has the team’s best interest in mind, or if Sew was every truly part of the team at all. They don’t want to be rude, but they definitely don’t consider Sew one of the true members of the Academy. They don’t voice it directly, but that sentiment is clear regardless.

BLADEBENDER - The two have been best friends since they were children. Since they were the first two at the academy, they were trained together and conditioned to be the leaders. Arcade was relieved to relegate the authority to their friend. It’s clear to everyone that the two are close and love each other very much.

STARBRIGHT - Starbright and Arcade were always the frontrunners for being the feminine face of the team. they were around the same age and both had powers that could be used to safely display mutant capabilities, Arcade was only chosen to be a representative because they were the first child to be adopted and thus benefited from some favoritism. Arcade never wanted the attention but didn’t give it up for fear of disappointing The Headmaster.
