Ulrin finished moving her last packed bag on the carriage. Moving away from home, leaving her mother, it was a scary thought. But when the prince requested she be taken to the palace for protection, she thought it was the best choice. The girl was occasionally plagued with nightmares of her mother being killed due to the powers Ulrin possessed.  

Ulrin turned to her mother, giving her a tight embrace. She refused to let go, taking in the lavender scent her mother loved to wear. 

“I love you,” Ulrin’s mother spoke. 

“I love you, too, mama. I promise I’ll try to visit you as much as I can.” 

It took a minute before the two separated. Ulrin carefully entered the carriage, waving goodbye. As the carriage moved, Ulrin’s mother went back into her home where a couple soldiers were waiting for her. Her mother knew the reality of the situation. She knew the story of the dead queen Etherna. The prince, like the king, didn’t want to protect Ulrin, he wanted to use her. 

“Get it over with,” Ulrin’s mother stated. 

Ulrin heard a small yell in the distance, but she was too far to realize that the yell was her mother being stabbed through the heart. The girl realized the truth once the prince told her that her mother was dead. 

Leaving the dungeon, free from the prince’s grasp, Ulrin begged Hena to find a specific lavender fragrance. 

When Hena questioned it, Ulrin told her, “It’s my mama’s favorite scent. It’ll make me feel safe whenever I’m scared or feel alone.” 

For the land of Inyx, humans possessing special abilities is normal. Humans possessing two special abilities, however, is rare. Those who come into this world with more than one ability usually find themselves being stolen from their families and sold off as a breeding partner.

Knowing this, Ulrin's mother made it her mission to keep her daughter from that fate. After losing Ulrin's father, who possessed ice powers, to the war, she could not bare to lose her only other family. Ulrin spent her childhood helping in the house while her mother did outside work. She wasn't allowed to use her abilities, no matter what. Ulrin possessed duel powers. Her left hand bared fire while her right water.

The two spent many years in their home of Edon Valley in peace. That was until word managed to spread of Ulrin one day and it caught the attention of the Prince. He sent a squad of soldiers to her house with one simple mission: Retrieve the daughter, kill the mother.

Ulrin didn't enjoy the castle much and took her time every single morning to ask the Prince about visiting her mother. And every single morning the Prince would tell her, "No." Ulrin would then spend the day wondering the castle. She was not fond of the Prince or any of the royal family for that matter. She spent her time alone.

A few months later, the Prince had a wedding arranged for him and Ulrin. On that day, Ulrin refused to marry him and it only made things worse. The enraged Prince dragged the girl down to the dungeons where he whipped her before leaving her in one of the cells. As the Prince left, he made sure to spit at the girl that her mother was dead and no one would ever come for her.

The girl wept for her mother causing two people in the cells beside her to come to her aid. They talked with her, focused on helping her calm. Ulrin spent some time venting before she was finally relaxed.

"So, tell me about you two," the girl spoke.

The boy to her left chuckled. "You see, we are just like you. The Princess wanted us for our abilities, but she is much less patient than the Prince. When I refused to break, she threw me down here and got a new optional mate."

"That being me," the boy in the right cell added. "Then she got bored of my defiance and tossed me down here, too."

Ulrin quickly realized that the royal family of Edon Valley desperately wanted to produce powered offspring. But it was only fueled thanks to the King whos former Queen possessed a shadow ability. When her children had no powers, the King killed her.

The next morning, the Prince come to the dungeon to ask Ulrin if she had changed her mind. And she would simple say, "No." He would follow in her footsteps and do this every single morning, regardless of how many times she denied. That was until, he didn't show up one morning. Ulrin thought he had finally given up and she would now rot in the dungeon with her new friends.

A soldier came down that lonesome morning, face completely covered and unrecognizable. They told the three prisoners to back away from the walls. They were confused, but complied. Three separate explosions boomed in each cell, creating a hole to escape from. The soldier individually hands each one clothes.

"Run to the hill just before the east border. I'll meet you there." Without a response, the soldier left.

The three quickly changed and ran from the cells with their new found freedom. They made it to the hill long before the solider making them grow anxious. Getting caught right now would be worse than death. Thankfully, the soldier arrived, pulling horses behind them.

"Who are you? And where are we going? What's going on? I have so many questions," the boy from the left cell ranted.

"I don't have time to explain everything right now. We need to get out of Edon Valley before we get caught," the soldier explained.

"Then at least tell us where we're heading?" Ulrin requested.

"Ambergate. I have a camp there where we can reside temporarily. Now, let's go."
