Objective Morality
Originally posted Australian Libertarian Society facebook group (edited to make sense): We have perceptions, and from those we must interpret reality by making assumptions. A common assumption is that physical reality is objective. This is a very useful assumption, but it is not deducible, it is an axiom. One could assume that reality is subjective, but to me that seems like a philosophical dead end! (You still have formal logic and mathematics, I suppose - which could very well occupy a lifetime of learning :D)One cannot assume both axioms about physical reality (they contradict one another) but provided one is consistent with any other axioms either is a fine choice. Alternatively, one could argue that certain things about reality are subjective and others objective, but as far as I know its not a common choice.Similarly, one has the same choice about morality (if one even chooses to define the notion, which is not required). I have found [objective morality] a useful assumption which does not contradict with my other assumptions and so I maintain it. The premise that morality is objective does not automatically lead to the conclusion of WHAT that morality actually is! We need other axioms and arguments to fully flesh it out (Just like starting with the assumption that physical reality follows objective laws does not reveal what those laws are, we need to glean them using additional philosophical tools)
