What's up with the Wooden Mannequin in The Amazing Digital Circus?
We first see the wooden mannequins in ep 1 as pomni is lead down the hallway to see kaufmo. They are seemingly used on bedroom doors as place holders as previous residents still have a picture but are crossed out.
The next time we see a wooden mannequin is when pomni is looking for caine after they find kaufmo abstracted in the series of shots where shes opening doors in quick succession. She opens a door to find a wooden mannequin bathing in a bathtub in an all white bathroom with a picture/window showing a bright blue sky and fluffy white clouds. The Wooden Mannequin stares at pomni for one second before a screaming red drama mask emerges from its head and speeds towards pomni, enlargening the closer it gets before leaving a dent as pomni slams the door shut.
This is one of the more scary monents in the first episode its a bit of a jump scare and because even though we haven't been told this yet we have a vauge understanding that in the circus ground only "humans" caine (?) And a select few npc are allowed to reside there permanently (bubble, sun & moon) or even temporarily for an adventure (think gloinks).
This second instance initially struck me as odd because the first time we saw one, they were place holders. But now here's one bathing? Then, later at the end of the episode we are told that the main cast doesn't need to do basic human things, i.e., eat sleep, etc. But they still do basic stuff anyway. Although strange that a wooden mannequinwas bathing, I originally wrote it off just as a funny little jumscare thrown in and because in the three episodes after where we get a lull in strange mannequin occurrence.
Later in episode one, we jump to caine and bubble eating lunch (?) in a restaurant of sorts surrounded by wooden mannequins also eating (?), further solidifying in the viewers' eyes that these mannequins are place holders. Somewhat contraindicing what we saw earlier in the episode in the bathroom.
Near the beginning of episode two, one of the first glances we the viewers get into candy kingdom is of the citizens, all of which are wooden mannequins who are all varying bright candy colors. Again, further solidifying that wooden mannequins are place holder npc in the veiwers eyes. We also get our first instance of a wooden mannequin speaking as a pastel purple mannequin knocks gangle over and shouts "look! It's the princess!" In a somewhat deranged manner while gesturing wildly.
The next time we see these colorful mannequins is when pomni and gummigoo clip under the map and we see several different colored wooden mannequins again solidifying that when you see a wooden mannequin, they are a place holder or npc for something that doesn't need to be fleshed out. And pomni, even after gummigoo asks why her and the others aren't down there, she says, "I-I'm not sure. Be-becasue we're not, uh, npc?"
Near the end of the episode when the unfortunate happens to gummigoo caine gives the reason that he could "-lose track of whos human and whos an npc, and who knows what could happen" trailing off at the with an up close zoom in on his face (?) Somewhat implying that it has happened before or he knows what would happen if that were to occur.
From episode three to four not much happens with the wooden mannequins outside of the established ordinary. A few mannequins do pop up hear and there. Episode five is where we get some new quite startling material.
During the intermission I do think it is of note that when we see jax runing down the bedroom corridor there is a wooden mannequin that has not been crossed out between kaufmo and the frog both of whom have both been crossed out. I do think that the inclusion of this door between them was intentional.
There is also the dissappearing man. I don't have much to say about him as not much is said or given contextually, besides that he's clearly from a previous adventure and comes back semi frequently.(thank god he was singing the national anthem, thank god)
Now to the real bread and butter, as the main cast comes back from their adventures we see the wooden mannequin from the bathtub in episode one (I asume) back lit peering around the corner with unsettling music playing as it zooms in on their face before they move behind the wall and fades to black as episode five ends.
This is the second appearance of a wooden mannequin on the circus grounds, spesifically in the tent. From this, we can generally assume that this wooden mannequin probably lives somewhere in the tent, which brings up a lot of questions:
Is this mannequin an npc? Are they humman? Are they something similar to caine and bubble? Do they have their own bedroom? We know there are plenty of doors with wooden mannequins on them so its plausible. Why are they hiding? When did they get to the circus? Does caine know? If not how have they managed to avoid him? What is this mannequins intentions?
Those are most, if not all, questions I have regarding the Wooden Manniquin so far.
Although I don't know how long Glitch plans to make tadc episodes, I assume that the wooden mannequin is going to be the overarching season plot for now, and we will find out more.
And thats all I have right now for this little essay thingy :3 all that aside I really enjoyed episode five it was supper fun to watch and I felt like a lot of other new lore was also revealed. I wrote this because as soon as I finished watching ep 5 when it came out my autisum struck regarding the mannequin and proceeded to rewatch all of the amazing digital circus and wrote this and some other notes about the show as i was going in 48 hours.
