Open textbooks
I recently read on the Open Access Tracking Project that British Columbia will be offering students free, open textbooks for some of the most popular post-secondary school courses in the 2013-2014 school year. This is a first for Canada and an attempt to make education more affordable for families. Read more about the program here. Hopefully this is an idea that will spread throughout Canada and across the globe!
Open access for high schools
Thanks to the OA Tracking Project, I came across a great article about open access resources for high schools. Sometimes I get caught up in the notion of open access for university libraries and scholarly research. It's important to remember that open access can spread beyond that. If you work in a high school or know someone who does, pass this link along. It looks like some great resources!
