Story:
His mother was all he had, as was he to her.
She never loved his father, they only met in passing and she realized that she was pregnant long after they had parted ways. She was the sole provider for Rustle,--thank the Stars she only had one kit!--the only one to nurture him, to encourage him, to sing to him, to teach him, to keep him warm.
For that, he loved her with his every being, but for that same reason, she was exhausted. When help came, she welcomed it eagerly.
Too eagerly.
Hazy always brightened whenever Chive was near, leaning on him for support. Rustle was grown now! He could help! But when he offered this, Hazy would tell him not to bother, Chive is handling it, why doesn't he go get some rest? When Rustle hunted or collected materials anyway, he always took longer than Chive, with measly offerings compared to Chive's perfect ones.
Chive wasn't perfect. He was a smug, scheming rat. When Hazy was away, he asked Rustle if he thought Hazy would allow him to stay with her for long. Loners usually parted their ways with their kits at some point, and now Hazy had a partner she could rely on to carry their weight. Maybe she would want a new litter--maybe with him, was the underlying message--and Rustle would only get in the way of that.
Rustle barred his teeth in a furious snarl. He would have lunged at Chive and pummeled him into the dirt if he didn't instantly think of the perfect plan.
Why don't the two of them settle this once and for all? They will hunt just one thing each. Whoever catches the best prey must leave the group.
Smug Chive agreed.
Of course, Chive caught the bigger prey--a plump robin. He puffed his chest as he presented it to Rustle and his mouse. But Rustle had shaken his head. The deal was that the prey must be better, not bigger, and Rustle knew for a fact that his mouse was far more delicious than that bird.
He goaded Chive on, stating every reason his mouse was perfect, and every reason the robin was terrible until fed up, Chive took the mouse and began to dig in. They can't compare if Rustle has nothing! He chuckled at Rustle's 'shocked' expression. Now Rustle would have to hunt again, taking longer again, while Chive and Hazy enjoy a nice, juicy, rob--
His words were cut off by coughs. The mask fell and Rustle watched impassively as Chive struggled, staring at him in shock and horror.
He told Chive that he was right. It looks like the robin really was better. But he won't be there to take credit for it.
Hazy was distraught. She didn't understand what had happened. A sudden sickness? Twoleg intervention? In any case, she was lead to the same conclusion: a horrible, crimeless thing.
They met a few more loners after that in passing. Some stayed for a few days, but no longer than that. Not until Apapane came along.
He was the opposite of Chive, in all the worst ways.
He was lazy. He let the others hunt and find shelter while he only did the bare minimum--just enough to keep him from being kicked out.
Rustle tried to convince Hazy, but Leaf-Bare was approaching. They needed all the help they could get. Three cats is better than two, no matter how lazy one of them was.
Rustle disagreed. Having more mouths to feed would lessen their chances of survival. Apanane was greedy too, taking more than his share. He needed to go.
Rustle hid him in an abandoned burrow. He must have run off to return to his Twolegs. You know kittypets, they can't stand the harshness of loner life.
Berry was good. No, Berry was perfect. She told Rustle and Hazy all about Clan life, about their ancestors and how they're always looking down on you. Rustle liked that idea. Berry also gave him a warrior nickname--Oakrustle.
It was while she was with Berry that Rustle realized she felt more like a she-cat than a tom--at least, it was while with him and his support that she finally came to a conclusion on the matter.
Berry really was perfect.
And he was taken far too soon.
Boots was the last of them. At that point, it wasn't just Hazy and Rustle and a third cat. Hazy quite liked the idea of a massive group of cats caring for each other, though they were still small relative to what Berry described--seven cats total.
Boots wasn't lazy.
He wasn't smug, either.
He was just an annoying pest.
Rustle didn't have to convince herself of anything. She didn't have to make it reasonable. She wanted Boots gone, so she would make him go, simple as that.
After that, things were good. The other cats were nice, they were agreeable and they pulled their weight. All of them even worked together to help Rustle out of a fire set by young Twolegs.
Finally. Hazy got cats that were deserving of her generosity.
As she lay dying, Rustle was happy.
Additional Information:
--Clangen run.
--In the game, they started as Clan cats, but for this I decided they are loners but Rustle goes to the Dark Forest because she believed in StarClan. Also decided that she got "Oakrustle" as a nickname rather than her main name
--She has scars from fighting other loners and burns from the fire.
