In Nigeria, Black wasnāt a thing. It was more like light or brown complexion. So it was interesting coming here(US) and being categorised that way. But I guess, Iām Black. Previously, I never bothered to enlighten myself about the Black American history, but when I realised I was regarded as one, I had to do my research. Being Black in America is peculiar. No one cares if youāre from Africa or wherever. Youāre seen as Black and treated as Black, with the whole institutional racism, and stereotypes. Iāve had a few experiences of being stereotyped as Black. Iāve been asked about the āanimal thingā If I have a Safari or have been to one or another case where I was asked if I knew a particular person from Tanzania because Iām from Africa. I mean thatās such a long shot! That mentality that because weāre Africans we know ourselves. Or they say, oh your English is good or you donāt sound Black. If I had received such ācomplimentsā before I moved, I probably would have been pleased that I was complimented for speaking good English, but now that Iām aware of the stereotypes associated with being Black and the institutional racism going on, I understand those are not compliments, but more like passive aggression.
