Professional Development
Like many other students at NYU I decided to get a part-time job during the school year. I actually found the job through NYU’s CareerNet, which is an online resource that has job (both part-time and full-time), internship, and fellowship postings, and is incredibly user friendly so that NYU students and alumni can understand the requirements and responsibilities. Because of NYU’s CareerNet I was actually able to get a job before I even stepped foot on campus for Welcome Week!!!
My job was at Pratt Institute Manhattan Campus, which was only a 15 minute walk from Washington Square Park. When getting a job or internship it is really important to consider distance so that you have enough time between classes and work to ensure you are never late for either. It can also impact whether or not you will have to get an unlimited metro pass, or if you can save money by walking.
If you decide to get a job your freshman year, I recommend working no more than 15 hours a week, especially during your first semester. It might take some time to get acclimated to your classes and the workload, so you don’t want to be too overwhelmed by working over 20 hours a week.
It is important to be strategic when you decide what job you want to get. I think being any sort of office assistant, administrative aide, or receptionist can always be beneficial to one’s resume because those skills (good phone skills, copying, data entry, etc.) always come in handy. However, you might want to get a retail job if you want discounts on clothes/shoes or if you want to work in the fashion industry.
Hope this helps, happy job/internship hunting! -Olivia B., OL
