I was so excited to be back at @afropunk this year, especially to help get more New Yorkers involved in our movement for mental health!
Need someone to talk to? Remember NYC Well for 24/7, free, confidential help from a trained counselor. Please spread the word.Â
It's been eight months since we launched NYCWell â our free, confidential, 24/7 mental health lifeline. Here's where we are...170,000 calls, texts and chats later!
an old classmate + friend shared with me a horrific experience that reminded me of what I went through in my past and I want to say, it takes A LOT to remember and share your story. Thereâs A LOT of options out there for you to talk to and share your story/experience. Just remember that youâre YOU and donât let anyone else have power over you. You can choose who you wish to confide into and pray & hope they wonât look at you differently and understand. ⢠⢠⢠#healthiseverything #mentalhealth #standstrong #nycwell #personalexperiece #selfcare #resilience #femalesstandtogether https://www.instagram.com/p/CCZAzNin21p/?igshid=akp55ptliv8e

Power imbalance
On many lines, call takers talk down to the callers. They treat them like little children who need to be corrected, told what to do and given trite little cliches. And donât you dare question any of it, or youâre in the wrong.
I was telling a call taker about how I was having trouble finding support. She told me in the most trite way possible that âThe only person who can motivate you is YOU!â
What a piece of trite nonsense. Everyone needs support. Pretending that anyone can take on the world by themselves is a complete myth.
I told her that it was condescending to say that when I just told her that I was looking for support. She gaslighted me and told me that she wasnât saying that it wasnât OK to look for support.
But itâs in the context of looking for support that I said that. When I tried to explain that, she got hostile and told me that Iâm misunderstanding. She said it over and over that I was misunderstanding.Â
I know this particular line has a pretty good feedback line where I can call a supervisor and generally get a real person to complain about someone. Iâve done it before. I was thinking about doing it again. That gave me the courage to speak up.
I told her, is it possible that maybe youâre misunderstanding me? Can it only be that Iâm misunderstanding you but not that youâre misunderstanding me? She says that sheâs understanding me fully but Iâm not understanding her. Again, demeaning.
I said it one more time that in the context of trying to get support, itâs demeaning to say that the only person who can motivate you is YOU.
Then she got into salty tone and told me she would listen. I told her the difficulty I was having finding support.Â
She apologized for the âmisunderstandingâ earlier and told me that she hope I find the support. I thanked her for the well wishes.
Iâm glad I stood up for myself. I probably would not have if I didnât know this line didnât have a decent feedback system.Â
This call line system is completely BROKEN. It needs more oversight. It needs more feedback systems. It needs more people to care about it, wheih generally means more funding
As we wait out the pounding from Hurricane Florence, remember that there is damage not as visible as downed power lines, and healing emotional pain is not as straightforward as rebuilding physical structures.
Anyone who needs extra support can speak to trained counselors at #NYCWell at any time of day or night. Call 1-888-NYC-Well, text âWELLâ to 65173 or chat online at http://nyc.gov/nycwell. You are not alone.
