Was opening the door to orangutans living one step closer to the wild thrilling? Of course! But it was also an important part of us understanding the learning process these animals go through before they are deemed ready for release. As youngsters they spend their days in Forest School learning from humans as surrogate mothers to build nests and find food. As they grow more independent they can graduate to a pre-release island (if there is space.) Here they will continue to receive supplemental feeding and monitoring. We also learned a great deal about moving animals as we watched 6 go through health checks, and transport via truck and boat. Needless to say the @bosfoundation team is a wealth of knowledge on these procedures. #orangutan # borneanorangutan #orangutanconservation #bosfoundation #nyaromenteng #borneoorangutansurvivalfoundation (at Bos Foundation's Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq7PQ2yFpQI/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ae303maca9to
