Numal, local creepy dead goat. do not accept his offers of asking for your blood.. he is not flirting.
Highlights from the National Model Arab League Conference this weekend:
The CEO and President of the organization calling everyone in attendance “prostitutes” and “whores” at opening ceremony
said President saying “let it roll off of you like water off of a duck’s back”
my council (Palestinian Affairs) taking over an hour to set the topics and order of the agenda so we could actually start substantive debate
that feel when your topic is “facilitating cooperation between Fatah and Hamas” and people respond with “Hamas is a terrorist organization and doesn’t deserve a seat at the negotiation table” (buddy....the Arab League recognizes four organizations as terrorist organizations, and none of them are Hamas)
On that note, take a drink every time the delegate from Morocco mentions Hamas and "terrorist organization" in the same sentence (it happened like 20+ times)
Managing to barely pass a resolution to get Israel and Palestine (or rather, “all relevant parties”) into talks to consider formally lifting the restrictions imposed by the sea blockade on the Gaza Strip
The majority of the body’s issues with said resolution were with bringing an unrecognized state by the body to the table of discussion (my state recognizes Israel tacitly, though not officially, so it wasn’t a problem when I actually wrote it)
Writing said resolution with the really cute and super nice guy representing Jordan, who put just as much effort into it as we did (his name is Scott)
With less than 6 hours of total council time left in the conference, we had passed 1 resolution and 1 press release and were debating amendments our second resolution (Productivity? What is that?)
Somalia making a motion to divide the question during voting procedures on a resolution (me: no. please no. why would you do this to us???)
Having to stand up and take a point of order to remind everyone that we were limited to debate on Topic 4 and they could not, in fact, start talking about Topic 1 or writing working papers for said topic until we had moved on from Topic 4 and formally expanded debate
Someone deciding that writing a resolution to educate Palestinians while discussing the Gaza Strip Blockade topic was topical?
Oman writing a resolution that made a foreign exchange visa program in one clause that fundamentally ignores the fact that Palestinians have no freedom of movement within their own territory and won’t be able to come back to the Palestinian territories without Israel’s approval if they leave
Also THIS IS THE PALESTINIAN AFFAIRS COUNCIL, PEOPLE! ISRAEL IS GOING TO COME UP! I’m just sorry I had to be the one to remind you all that we don’t live in a fantasy world where the people of Palestine are all hunky dory and have freedom of movement within their borders
Novel idea everyone: write good papers the first time around instead of writing 25 amendments rewriting entire clauses and/or trying to pass a resolution that is obviously unfinished and incredibly problematic so that I don’t have to vote “no with rights” when the chair calls my country during the vote
In an unmod: “I swear, some of these people major in run-on sentences.”
when that one country *cough* Saudi Arabia *cough* has to say their full name during the roll call after break time
The council just tacitly agreeing to not talk about Iran the entire weekend even though they are lowkey directly involved with the Israeli-Palestinian issue and should probably have featured in one of our topics
Sudan straight up trying to put a working paper on the floor that advocates for military intervention and the creation of an Arab League Peacekeeping Force to go into the Gaza Strip (what the fuuuuuuuuuuck)
Said working paper also asking all Arab States to expel all of their US diplomats and close the consulates (we are trying to DE-ESCALATE conflict here people, not ESCALATE it)
Comoros standing up and saying “Yes we do in fact consider Israel a terrorist state”
Multiple delegates calling Israel “the Zionist entity” after that (me, representing a country that recognizes Israel, to my partner: “Okay so as long as they don’t actually pass an amendment that specifies that the terrorists they are referring to are Israel, we can vote for it.”)
The council establishing an organization called PRICC
My council trying to introduce, amend, and pass a resolution within the last ten minutes of our last council session
My council successfully passing said resolution with one minute left
When the guest speaker accidentally referenced the wrong Constitutional Amendment in his speech (he meant the First, but he said the Second)
Winning Distinguished Delegate Award for my representation of my country in the council (the delegate representing Yemen actually thanked me for being such a “conscientious objector” and bringing up such good points during the various sessions and for writing such a quality resolution)
And, the real highlight: the #NUMAL2018 twitter tag
