I was rereading some of my favorite parts from Oblivion and the song “No Time To Die” by Billie Eilish came on and I just felt it was an amazing fit for Kagome feeling betrayed by Okada. Do you have any songs you feel fit, or have even inspired your stories?
HI HELLO THIS IS PROBABLY SUCH A LATE RESPONSE BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ASKING THIS QUESTION!
Music is SO integral to my writing process. I can’t exaggerate how much. It’s gotten to the point where hearing a new song with just the right lyrics and/or vibe will get me super pumped and inspired to write (and I often have to scramble to Shazam the track to add to my Oblivion Spotify Playlist).
So the way it usually breaks down is I have songs that are more character-centric (I play these when really trying to nail down said character’s POV or dialogue) and songs that are more about a mood (these help with general atmosphere or feelings that I want to get across in a scene).
I’ll actually be posting TikToks starting today that show the evolution of the characters’ song themes over the course of Oblivion so far, so stay tuned for that! As far as mood songs go, here are a few old standards I keep coming back to for this rollercoaster of a story.
Carpenter Brut - “Turbo Killer”
I am straight up choreographing a not-yet-seen battle to this. It’s just so damn good.
Gatsbys American Dream - “Theatre”
Oop my emo phase is showing. BUT THESE LYRICS, YO. Perfectly encapsulates the central character theme I’ve got running through the whole motley crew.
System of a Down - “Soldier Side”
This song is more astute about the costs of war than I could ever hope to be (but I’m trying my best dang it). One of my goals for this story, from the beginning, was to never shy away from the senselessness of it all, the sheer waste of life, and I think my bois in SOAD absolutely nailed it.
I of course have more, but I don’t want to make this post any longer than it is lol
Thanks for the ask!
