Container Ship Crash: Albert Olendorff vs Saudi Tabuk, Halifax, 2003
When Hurricane Juan struck Halifax, Nova Scotia September 28-29, 2003 there were two container ships tied up at adjacent berths. Albert Oldendorff (the former Hoegh Dyke) parted its lines in the high winds and drifted down on the Saudi Tabuk striking it near the bow. In the process some containers tumbled onto Saudi Tabuk's foredeck, and others were dislodged. Saudi Tabuk's bow crushed several containers on the Albert Oldendorff.
Ironically, Albert Oldendorff was carrying some National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia containers. Hoegh had exited the container business, forming Indotrans with the Oldendorff company, and there are some former Hoegh containers on the Albert Oldendorff.
