Twisted Fate - Flatline
âI donât DO well with heightsâ Kade growled stepping out of the teleportation âAnd that is why I donât LIKE flyingâ
âBut you can fly right?â Riley asked as he stepped out next to Kade.
âYES!â Kade snapped, throwing his hands up âJust asked the third year, LightningSpeed. He saw itâ
âBut you werenât in this dimensionâ Beck said as his dimension closed behind him âThere might be a difference from here and there. So you might not be able to do it hereâ
Kade growled and took a threatening step towards Beck. Â
A hand caught his shoulder, pulling him back slightly.  âHe just trying to rile you up, Idiotâ Killianâs voice said from behind him. Â
âTook you long enough to get hereâ Kade grumbled âAnd why the heck did you leave me alone with these two! They just wouldnât keep their mouths shutâ
Killian snorted as Bell landed next to them. Â
âBoysâ she asked warningly âDonât fight, weâre here to help, offer support for the heroes and evacuate the civiliansâ
Kade turned towards the city. He could see smoke rising into the sky. His fingers lightly touching the right side of his face at the memory that wanted to push its way to the front. Â
Hopefully this doesnât turn out the way that little adventure did.
âWhat happened?â he asked, looking back at Bell. Â
She bit her lip.  âThere was an attack, some group called Forswornâ she said âSomething about their leader being kill and now they want vengeance for it. They donât even know who killed their leaderâ
Kade schooled his expression. Â
That name.
He knew it.
He knew it very well.
From a long time ago.
From the sound of things, they finally got back to their feet after he took them apart with his father. Â
While they were part of the villains.
âThat sounds like itâs already over. Why did they call in the academy?â he asked âThey donât need us if the fighting is overâ
âBecause thatâs not the problemâ Bell said âThe problem is the fires. Some of the buildings are really old. The heroes are afraid that they might come down. Weâve also received a warning of a possible earthquakeâ
âThe fires are spreadingâ Kade muttered and Bell nodded âWhereâs the other teams?â
âSplit up. We have 6 different locations that needs assistanceâ
âAnd they are all about five or six people?â
Bell nodded.
âWhy are you so curious?â Beck asked, narrowing his eyes at Kade.
Kade just flipped him off, as shadows formed beneath his feet.  âLetâs goâ he said as he shot forward into the air. Just high enough so his fear doesnât kick in. Â
âDamnâ Riley said âHe really can flyâ
***
Kade jumped back a rubble fell from one of the buildings, he lifted one hand, the shadows forming a dome over him and the refugees. Â
âSTAY TOGETHER!â he yelled, flinching as the shadows started blackening his fingers. They were trying to devour him again. He took a deep breath and threw the rubble to the side. âDonât fall behind!â
It took a few minutes before the others reached him. All of them had groups of people with them. Â
âAre you sure you can do this?â Killian asked, a worried look in his eyes.
Kade shrugged.  âWell Iâm not sure...â he muttered, making sure that the civilians couldnât hear him âI can try the academy. They should be save over there. I just donât know how many of them I work at a timeâ
âIâll take more through a dimensionâ Beck said, looking at Kade.
âAlrightâ Kade said âAs soon as these guys are out of here, we need to go out againâ
Bell nodded.  âIâve cleared about two blocks, we still have a lot to doâ she said âIâve been feeling tremors in the ground for the last few minutes. We need to hurryâ
âAlright letâs do thisâ Kade said turning to the civilians âPlease break up into two groups. One group with me and the other with Breechâ
The people moved quickly. Â
Beck opened his dimension tear and started ushering the people through. Kade just quickly teleported the people two, two at a time. When he got to the last few, he was already struggling to keep it up. Â
When the last of the civilians disappeared, his knees buckled and he just sat down on the ground.
Killian quickly walked over.  âAre you alright?â he asked.
Kade took a deep breath and nodded, getting to his feet. They were all sweaty, dirty and soot covered. Â
âYou to to doing that a few more times?â Riley asked. Â
âDonât have much of a choice, now do we?â
âYou said itâ Beck groaned. Â
They split up again. Â
The fires burned hot around them, casting shadows on the ground, but also making more light than Kade would have liked. Â
Screams and shouts drew his attention and he followed the sound, finding more civilians, before leading them out. Â
Again he and Beck got the people out, before going in looking for more. It continued until Kade and beck finally, just could summon the energy to do it again. Â
Kade just sat against the wall, eyes closed, trying to catch his breath. Beck sat next to him. Â
âThey canât keep this upâ Killian whispered to Bell, his back turned to the other two.
âI knowâ
âLook at Kadeâs handsâ
Bell glanced at Kadeâs hands, they black. The darkness already reached his wrists, with black veins crawling all the way up his arms and disappearing beneath his shirt. She could see some of the black veins starting to come out from his neck. While there were shadows around his eyes. Â
Both were pale and exhausted. Â
âWe let them rest here while we continueâ Bell said after a moment âKadeâs not going to like it, but he can barely stay on his feetâ
Killian nodded, he reached for the black ring on his finger, playing with it for a moment.  âEven then, we will have to escort the civilians outâ
âHeâs rightâ Riley said as he joined them âBeckâs at his limit. He wouldnât even be able to form a dagger at the moment. Weâll be lucky if we donât have to carry them out of thereâ
âWe can hear you, you knowâ Kade groaned and opened his eyes.
He did not want to admit it, but they were right. Â
Killian pulled his hand through his hair as he turned towards Kade and Beck.  âYouâre staying here. Weâre going to back out. Donât wonder off, donât argue and donât annoy each otherâ
The corner of Kadeâs mouth pulled into a slight smirk, while Beck just snorted. Â
âGoodâ
With that the other three disappeared. Â
Kade just closed his eyes again.  âYou feeling it?â he asked.
âYeahâ Beck muttered âFor the last few minutes, since we sat downâ
âThey are not going to make it out beforeâ
âNeither are weâ
âWeâre screwedâ
âYeahâ
Silence fell over the for a moment.
âKill got a new ringâ Beck said.
âI knowâ Kade muttered, flinching at the sharp pain in his chest âHis other one got lost a few weeks backâ
âIt means a lot to him, right?â
âItâll mean more if you tell him you know what it meansâ Kade grumbled and opened his eyes. His hands hurt. His head throbbed. And he felt like he just ran two marathons.Â
âHow do you know what it means?â Beck asked as he slowly got to his feet.
âThe brat has one as wellâ Kade said as he allowed Beck to pull him to his feet.
âBrat?â Beck asked confused for a moment âOh you mean little lightning kidâ
âYeah, and heâs not a kid, you know he only about 2 cm shorter than you, right?â Kade asked leaning back against the building. Â
âI never knew you could make a shield with your shadowsâ Beck said, dropping the other subject.
âNew trick Iâm practicingâÂ
Before Beck could say anything else a scream sounded through the air.
âWhat the hell?â Kade hissed, his eyes searching for the source. He glanced at Beck. The other guy shrugged before nodding. Â
âI guess, weâre upâÂ
***
Kade slammed into the wall behind him as the ground started trembling and moving. Kids scream and people started crying. Â
âGET THEM OUTâ he yelled, throwing his hands up. Â
Shadow rushed forward, becoming solid as he struggled to stop the building from collapsing on top of them.
Beck clenched his jaw, moving his hand slightly. A dimension tear appeared in front of him. It did not go very far, but it would get the people out of the building. Â
âGo! Go! Go!â he waved the people through. Â
As the last one disappeared through, he collapsed on the ground coughing. Blood stained his lip. Â
Kade let out a yelp as the building dropped. He let of of his shadows, stumbling back. For a moment his vision turned black. Without hesitation he stumbled towards Beck, grabbed him by the back of his shirt and hulled him to his feet.
âMOVE ITâ he yelled over the sound of the building coming down on top of them.
Beck didnât respond, he was barely staying on his feet. Â
âSHITâ Kade snarled and took a deep breath. Â
Again he reached for his teleportation. He could feel it tearing through his body, ripping him apart as he focused. Â
This was going to be painful.
For a moment he through his could feel heart skipping a beat or two and then they crashed into the ground. Â
In the distance he could hear the sound of the building collapsing. Â
People screamed.
Without checking on Beck, Kade rolled to his feet, lifting both hands towards the oncoming shockwave.
It slammed into his shadows, pushing him back. Â
Pain tore through his shoulders and chest. Â
And then everything was silent. Â
All Kade could heart was his own rapid heart beat and gasping breaths. Â
âNIGHTSHADE! BREECH!â
He spun around, everything went out of focus for a moment before he lost his balance and just fell back onto the ground. Â
For a moment he just stared at the people that stood in front of him. Bell, Killian and Riley. All three of them were staring at him with shocked expressions. Â
âWhat?â he asked out of breath, before his eyes flickered towards the new group of civilians that stood behind them.
âI though we told you two to stay still...â Bell barely finished and Kade shot to his feet, looking around. Â
First he saw Beck laying on the ground, chest heaving as he tried to get his breath back, before his eyes flickered to the terrified group of people that stood not so far away from Beck.
Damn, he must have terrified them when he teleported to right next to them.
Not that he could help that. Â
He breathed out before leaning with his hands on his knees, still gasping. After a moment he just let his legs give him, sitting down on the ground. Â
âHey Breechâ he called back towards the other guy âYou still alive?â
âVery funny, assholeâ
Kade snorted before looking at Killian, Bell and Riley again.  âWhatâs with the looks?â he asked. Â
âYou scared us half to death when you werenât where we left youâ Bell said
âSorry... We had work to doâ he said, nodding towards his group of people âCouldnât help itâ
Bell breathed out and gave him a slight smile. Â
âWe need to get movingâ Beck said as he slowly sat up âThat thing you were talking about? Well itâs almost hereâ
Killian cussed under his breath.Â
Riley walked up to Beck holding out his hands and pulling the other guy to his feet, while Killian did the same with Kade.Â
âThen letâs goâ
Then it happened.
The ground started trembling, moving beneath theirs feet. People screamed and fell to the ground. Â
Everyone that could fly and still had enough energy left lifted into the air. Â
A loud thundering sounded through the air. Â
Kadeâs eyes snapped towards the building they were standing next to.  âGet back...â he whispered, pushing Killian back behind him âGET BACK!â
The group that he and Beck just save, were to terrified to move.Â
âno...â Kade whispered âno... no... no... no, no, no, no...â
He could feel something in him snap.
Shadow rushed forward.
And he screamed, letting his power flow unchecked through him. Â
Slowly he lifted his hands, palms up, almost like he was catching something. Â
The building slammed into his shadows. Â
Forcing Kade to his knees. Â
He tasted blood. Â
With another scream he pushed against the building with his shadows. The creatures within tore into the building. Â
Bell stared at Kade, eyes wide with shock. Then she shook her head. They started gathering everyone, getting them away from the building. Â
Kade noticed out of the corner of his eye that Bell gathered everyone. Â
He reached for more power. The power thatâs been locked away for so long by his father. Â
It rushed painfully through him.
And then he pushed against the building. Â
The air filled with sounds of concrete falling. Metal bending and breaking. Thundering as the building started to tilt the other way. Â
âStay behind usâ Bell said. Â
She couldnât take her eyes of Kade. The black vein now started crawling up his face, shadows rose from his eyes like smoke. Blood dripped from the corner of his mouth and from his ears. She could see him straining against the building. Â
Her eyes snapped towards the shadows holding the building and for a split second she could have sworn the shadows from a humanoid figure, holding the building. Â
A shiver ran through her body. She could feel Kade power increasing, draining his body of life. If he didnât stop, he would die.
âShieldsâ she said âWe need to layer our shields. He needs to let go...â
âKADEâ Killian yelled as he formed an ice shield in front of them âKADE!â
There was a loud snap and the shadows disappeared as if someone shone a light on them. Â
âNO!â Bell and Killian yelled as they saw Kade fall. Â
The building groaned and collapsed. Â
Ether washed over everyone before a layer of blood mist came. Finally they were all encased in a done of pure ice. Â
When the rumbling finally stopped. There was just a shocked silence. All of the shields disappeared. Â
Everyone froze. Â
The entire area in front of them, were clear. There was no rubble nor dust. It all lay next to the clear v from that started where Kade was and ended past them. Â
Kade were on his feet. Â
Arms hanging limply at his sides. Head thrown back, as he stared up at the grey, smoke filled sky. Â
Slowly he turned towards them. Â
All Bell could see was the black line running over the right side of his face, from the forehead down to his jaw. And his black eyes.
It looked like a pulse went through him, and one hand clutched his chest as he went down to his knees, before just limply fall down. Â
Bell and Killian shot forward. Â
They fell down next to him. Â
Bell quickly turned him on his face. Â
All of the black had disappeared from his skin. All that was still visible was the slight black line over his face. Â
âKade!â Bell called out, shaking his shoulders slightly.
Nothing happened.
âKillian..â she glanced at him, eyes wide. Â
Killian leaned over the brunette, pressing two fingers against his throat. As the second ticked by, he just shook his head. Â
âNothing...â he whispered. To shocked to say anything else.
Bell could feel herself trembling.
âCPRâ another voice said from behind them.
Riley knelt next to Bell. He took a deep breath before placing his hands on Kadeâs chest, one hand on top of the other, clasping them together. As he started with the chest compressions, he glanced at Bell, who was just staring down at Kade, her golden eyes filled with tears. Â
âBellâ he said and he continued. She did not react.  âArabellaâ he snapped and she quickly looked at him.
âYouâll have to give him two breaths, alright?â Riley said.
She nodded and moved next to Kadeâs head. Gently she tilted his chin slightly up before looking at Riley again. Â
He gave her a sharp nod. Â
Bell pinched Kadeâs nose as she gave him the first breath. His chest rose and fell. She repeated the action. Again his chest rose and fell.
Riley just nodded as he continued with the chest compressions. Â
Beck made his way over to them, taking a place opposite Riley, next to Killian.
âWhat the hell did he do?â he asked softly, hands clenched into fists. Â
Bell wiped away the tears that started running down her cheeks as she shook her head. Riley nodded towards her and she gave Kade another two breaths.
Every one watched as his chest rose and fell. Â
After three minutes, Beck took over for Riley.Â
âBloody asshole needs to wake upâ Riley growled, trying to catch his breath. Â
Killian who hadnât said a word the entire time, nodded.  âHe willâ he said âHe wouldnât go like thisâ
Bell brushed Kadeâs messy air out of his face, her finger tracing the now almost invisible like over his face.  âCome on... NightShade... Open your eyes...â she whispered âYou cannot leave...â
Killian took over for Bell, when it became clear that she couldnât go on. Â
âIs he... going to be alright?â a small voice asked softly.
Bell blinked away from of the tears, looking up. The civilians gathered around them, casting shadows on the ground. Â
It was one of the children that spoke. Â
âWe are doing our bestâ Bell said, wiping away the tears. Â
âYou bloody assholeâ Beck growled âYou said you canât die before youâve atoned for everything. So BLOODY WAKE UP!â
A faint gasp sounded and everyone froze. Â
As they watch Kadeâs chest slowly rose slightly and fell, before rising again. Â
âKade?â Bell asked softly, hesitantly moving closer to him, afraid that her light might have a bad effect on him. Â
âNightShade?â Riley asked.
A weak cough sounded from Kade, but he did not open his eyes. Â
âHeâs breathing...â Bell whispered, glancing up at Killian. Â
There was tears running down both their faces. Killian just gave her a slight smile before turning his attention back to Kade. Â
âYou seeâ Riley said âThis ass is not going to leave us any time soonâ
Bell turned towards him before she just threw her arms around him, hugging him as she sobbed.  âThank you...â she whispered âThank you...â
Riley glanced at the other two as he patted her on the back.  âItâs alright, Bellaâ he said softly âKayâs going to be alrightâ
Slowly Bell pulled away from Riley and nodded before she turned back to Kade, gently talking his hand. It was warm. The tips were still slightly stained black, but it will disappeared in time. Â
She bit her lip.  âWe need to leaveâÂ
The others nodded. Killian just sat there staring down at Kade. His friend looked so pale and he couldnât get the image of those shadow rising from his eyes, as they turned pitch black out of this mind. And that line over his face. Â
It was a scar.
Heâs seen Kadeâs other scars. The worst ones all did that. Â
âIâll carry himâ Riley said. Â
âNoâ Killian said without looking up âIâll do itâ
Everyone looked at him, but he refused to look up at them. Â
âIâll carry himâ he said again.
âIt wasnât your faultâ Bell whispered.
âI should have been hereâ Killian said âI should have...â
âkill...â
Everyone froze.Â
Killianâs eyes widened as he leaned over Kade.  âKay?â he asked softly. Â
Kadeâs eyes flickered open for a moment, before closing again. His fingers tightened in Bellâs hand. Â
Weakly.
Barely noticeable. Â
After a few second, his eyes opened again, a pale, dull, confused green searched until they landed on Killian. For a moment he managed to lift his hand towards him, before it just fell limply back to his side. Â
Killian caught his hand and gave it a slight squeeze. Â
âKay...â he said trying keep the tears back.
ânot your fault...â Kade managed a whisper before his eyes flickered closed again.
His breathing halted for a moment and Killian nearly started crying again. Â
âAlrightâ Riley said, taking a deep breath âLetâs get out of here. Mirage, are you sure youâll be alright carrying him?â
Killian nodded. Very carefully, he slid one arm behind Kadeâs knees, and the other under his shoulders. As he lifted Kade up, he shifted him slightly, so itâll be easier to carry him before looking up and nodded.Â
***
The hospital was quiet. Â
Only the constant beeping from the heart monitor disturbed the silence. There was a soft whoosh every time the ventilator deflated and inflated. Â
Killian shifted slightly in the chair, careful not to wake Bell, who were fast asleep on the other side of the bed, also in a chair. Neither of them had let Kade out of sight, but for the time the doctors treated him. Â
They had him hooked up to an IV, ventilator for the intubation since he was having trouble breathing on his own, and a heart monitor. The doctor wanted to keep Kade in an induced coma, but for some reason he decided against it when he read through Kadeâs file. Â
The door opened and Killianâs head snapped up. A short, black haired guy peered into the room.  He jumped slightly when he noticed Killian.
âOh sorry...â he muttered âI didnât know there was someone hereâ
âThatâs alright...â Killian said, glancing at Bell. Â She was still asleep. Â âYou can come in if you want toâ
The guy nodded and stepped into the room. Â
It took Killian a moment before he realized who it was. Â âYou are Vynal, right?â he asked as the other guy walked up to the bed.Â
He glanced at Bell before looking at Killian. âYesâ
âDid Ruelle send you?â
âNoâ
âThen who?â
âI was doing rounds in the hospital and heard that he was brought in...â Vynal hesitated for a moment, his eyes flickered to Kade âWhat happened?
Killian shook his head slightly. Â âIâm not sure. Â He over used his power and then pushed himself even more....â he said and looked over at Kade âHis heart stopped... Â He wasnât breathing... Â I... Â I thought he was deadâ
Vynal blinked a few times before he nodded. Â
âCan I take a look at him?â he asked.
âPlease...â Killian said âHe hasnât woken up since then and...âÂ
â...you are worried about himâ Vynal said, remembering the other time he met the shadow user. Â He was in bad shape, but this was something else.
Killian nodded. Â
âWe both areâ Bellâs voice said, causing Vynal to almost jump out of his skin âSorry. I didnât mean to scare youâ
Vynal nodded.  âIâll look at him nowâ he said, walking over to the bed. Â
Bell got up and moved away the chair so Vynal could have enough space to work. Â
His hands looked even darker when he placed one on Kadeâs forehead, the other over his heart. Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes. Seconds ticked slowly by. Â
A frown formed on his face and he opened his eyes, pulling his hands back. Â
âHis brain is fineâ he said âJust over taxed. Thatâs why he hasnât woken up yet. What he did strained him a lot...â
âBut?â Bell said.Â
Vynalâs shoulders sagged.  âHis heartâs been damagedâ he said softly âI can try to heal it, but Iâve never seen anything like thatâ
âWhat do you mean?â Killian asked, since Bell just stood there, holding Kadeâs hand. It almost looked like she thought he would disappear if she let go.
âI wouldnât be able to heal it completelyâ Vynal said âBut I can fix the worse damage, but from now on, there will always be a chance that his heart might fail if he puts to much strain on itâ
With that Vynal turned back to Kade.  âYouâre going to be alrightâ he said as he removed the intubation tube âJust hold on for a little longer. Iâm going to fix you up. Donât do this again, because then I might not be able to help youâ
He place both hands on Kadeâs chest.
A soft hum sounded through the room.
Seconds ticked by. Â
A groan sounded from Kade and Vynal lifted his hands, the hum stopping. Â
Slowly Kadeâs eyes opened. He blinked a few times, before looking around confused. Â
âWhat... happened?â he asked voice hoarse. Â
