antescript: i haven't decently read a book, for my own pleasure, in a very long time. i'm not proud of that. these are also in no particular order

the night circus (erin morgenstern) : while maybe not as powerful as the other books, i just loved this author's usage of words and vivid imagination. i think this book especially just keeps the child inside me sated and happy. it's good to delve into your imagination.

unbroken (lauren hillenbrand) : powerful, stunning, but also just really inspiring. i don't have much to say about this book. it speaks for itself.

the kite runner (khaled hosseini) : see #2

harry potter (jk rowling) : books 1-7! i know every english teacher cringes when i place this on my favourites but man, this was my childhood. i fucking love harry potter and nobody can make me think otherwise.

warrior cats (erin hunter) : i'm really glad i never really got past the first series, but yeah. echoing anne, this shit got me into rpgs. i'm not sure if that makes me proud or what.

1. If you ever had the chance to speak to a past version of yourself, what would you tell them?

DON’T JOIN NEOPETS. I got sucked into online world of gaming/chatting/time-wasting after I joined Neopets in third grade. From there, I built upon bad procrastination and lazy habits that I’m working to break right now.

Half kidding.

If I had the chance, I would go speak to myself in my early middle school years. I would tell myself to stay committed to one or two things I truly enjoy. Don’t do things for praise, or out of fear of other people’s judgement. Don’t worry about failure. Do, because you want to understand and grow and become someone you yourself are proud of.

2. What era of time would you like to visit?

Would you (and only you) live a life of immortality?

After I read the question, I toyed with the idea. I’ve watched and read a lot of fiction that paints immortality as a sort of living hell, and I wanted to move away from those prejudices. 

There were two types of immortality that came to mind. First, there is agelessness or eternal youth - the guarantee that one will never be plagued by natural deterioration/death. Then, there is true immortality: agelessness coupled with an immunity to death. In this case, any and all physical harm will never be lethal. Sure, that sounds badass, but that also means I would not be able to take my own life, should I ever tire of living. I do not have suicidal tendencies, but I feel that it is important that I have some control over my own life. Moreover, I would be a kind of fugitive from the world; being immortal might mean that others will hunt me down with hopes of finding the secret to immortality, either as a weapon or as a cure. Even if I weren’t coerced into some inhumane situation, if word ever got out, surely it would make it to the headlines. From then on, I probably wouldn’t be entitled to the same treatment as a ‘normal’ person.

As for eternal youth, it definitely sounds tempting.The ability to avoid the mental and physical deterioration of aging means that I would have so much time to do so much more. I could accumulate such a vast wealth of knowledge and help progress in science. There is so much to learn; if I had my fill of one subject, I could move onto another. I could dream of the future, and then experience it for myself. And when I felt truly done, I could end it.

However, yet again, there is the problem of being the only immortal. There’s no telling how the world would treat such an abnormality. I believe that the people in my life that I interact with on a regular basis would come to accept my odd condition. But there will always be extremists who tolerate nothing that threatens their beliefs. So immortality, in their book, would be a monstrous anomaly, immoral, something that should not be. As long as they don’t threaten my way of life, I wouldn’t have a problem. But it’s hard to tell.

Finally, there’s the fact that everyone I care for will age and die before me… unless I take my own life. But even then, I feel like there’s a special kind of bond and shared wisdom that comes with growing and aging alongside people who care about you. Time would stop for me while I watch my sister, my lover, my children and grandchildren grow, age, and pass. It seems like it would be sad. I don’t know if the grief would come to pass, or if it would be more crippling. I don’t know. There is the opportunity to start anew and form a new life, which would be interesting. But I don’t know how much I could enjoy the relationships, 20 or so years after forming them - when the difference in aging really becomes apparent.

Full Metal Alchemist: Greed, Envy, Lust, Pride, Wrath, Gluttony, Sloth: Pick the 3 you feel pertain to you most

I'm laughing at how easily I can answer this question. All of them because I'm a terrible human being. Seriously though, I can definitely say that the vices plaguing my soul are Sloth, Pride and Envy. I could do a well-thought, and eloquent monologue/rant in which I analyze my inadequacies and come to terms with myself but HEY I picked sloth for a reason. Besides that, I'm not very poetic. I'd probably end up sounding melodramatic. Instead, I'll compare myself to an anime character like the weaboo I am. Take Oreki (Hyouka) for example. His laziness is glorified on tumblr and I live by his words, "If I don't have to do something, I won't, but if I have to, I'll do it quickly." Well sort of. My version of his quote: "If I don't have to do something, then I definitely won't, but if I have to, I'll do it slowly, begrudgingly and will complain the entire way." Throw in a little bit of Tsukishima's (Haikyuu!!) snobbery (is that a word? lol) and you get ME. A passive aggressive asshole with a superiority complex. 

I guess the only good thing about this is that I do my best to keep this finicky, petty part of me bottled. The last thing I want is to project my frustration onto others. I think I've gotten a little better at it :|
