I am truly blown away by what a producer is able to achieve with just a computer program and a few peripherals to control their software.  Think of how far producing has actually come – it used to come down to a series of live recordings that were full of problems that couldn’t be corrected.  The media on which people used to record is another story in itself.  Imagine having to record audio to an analog media like magnetic tape, and then having to find ways to cut and splice it together to achieve “perfection”.  It must have been agonizing for producers, with the painstaking task of trying to make sound become something better than it really was. [embed width="656"]http://youtu.be/mWn4jOohP2U[/embed] With a computer and a proper DAW, edits can be made with a touch of a button, and a producer can sample his final outcome before ever mixing it down into a viable song.  Controllers have literally taken the place of complex mixing boards (although haven’t replaced their usefulness completely).  One laptop and the Novation LaunchPad might be all you need to take a semi produced track and perform it live.  Now that Lauflicht has been updated, up to four Launchpads can be ran together in sequence. http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2013/02/17/lauflicht-step-sequencer-now-supports-up-to-four-novation-launchpads/

Those who felt the vibe from many Youtube performances on the Novation Launchpad have now come to understand that it is harder than it looks.  No doubt it was because of these live Launchpad performances that DJs and producers ran out to go buy the latest copy of Ableton in conjunction with their newfound controller.  What they have probably discovered is that there is a lot of work that goes into making a live performance, and that it just doesn’t come by adding instruments to a squared controller.  I would guess that a small percentage of these people felt the heat and decided to give up before they even start, unloading them into the second hand market. The Novation Launchpad S also worsened the situation, and those who were thinking about selling off their prize just took the hit.  On the bright side of things, the second rendition is a much better looking controller.  I guess they took their hints from the Maschine, figuring out that more color equals better.  It looks the same and I would guess that the internals are the same as well – but the color scheme will help our eyes organize the visual cues. http://www.djbooth.net/index/dj-equipment/entry/video-novation-launchpad-s
