sunmi is not a model by any means. she had classes years ago. took some workshops on how to pose and stuff. the best she could do was taking mirror selfies for instragram pictures or snapchat. she isnât the most comfortable with people taking a picture of her unless itâs a friend and they were planning poses. she realises this (all too late, mind you) is going to be especially difficult considering sheâs now going to be an idol.
she never gave it much thought before because she was mainly focused on fansites. who would typically take any picture they can get. she can be doing the most mundane things and a fansite with a good eye would capture it. they were mostly off guard photos so she wouldnât need to worry about it. but modeling? she completely forgot about it. the minute theyâre readying for the jacket making for the album she wishes she was a little bit more comfortable with all of this. was she the only one struggling with this? she wasnât sure. some of the others seemed to pick up on it a bit faster than she did.
in order to forget her discomfort, she leaned into her team a little bit. this was an area where she wouldnât be able to do much leading. she wasnât an expert by any means and sheâs clearly not the type to focus on pictorials and photoshoots despite it being a routine for an idol. focusing on her members not only calmed her down but made her feel more comfortable. she catches herself smiling more than once, watching them support one another with cheesy faux flirtations thrown each otherâs way to boost morale. she finds herself doing the same: giving compliments and making the others feel more at ease.
itâs a more playful environment. while sunmi struggled a bit with what âlookâ to go for her pictures, she sees that everyone has their own way of going about things. hearing kaeun or meiqi praise the other members and say things that make everyone laugh: it brings sunmi to be a little more playful during her own photoshoot at times then maybe go for a little more mature and sexy. the vibe changes and she feels....surprisingly good about it after a photo rotation.
the leader thinks to herself about how lucky she is to have her girls. for everyone to support one another and spread smiles. if it werenât for them, sheâd probably do terrible at her photos. she looks at the others fondly, a small smile on her face. she has to thank them for everything some day. they were the best group to ever have.
sunmi feels lucky this way. ironically enough, she feels lucky to have her group.

because sheâs the leader of and*roma, sunmi would also be the âspeakerâ of the group. she knows that interviewers would mainly throw the questions to her, as is customary for groups. of everyone, she had to be the most prepared. sunmi liked to think she was good at avoiding verbal traps set by people but who knows how that goes down in actuality. sheâs never been in an interviewing session before beyond the two shows that required it. even then her replies were mostly strategic. it depends on what they do with the footage. even the most carefully crafted answers could be used against them.
âhow long have you been preparing for debut?â
immediately sunmi knows she canât say too many details about behind the scene stuff. her responses have to be surface-level that give off the appearance of being deep. âiâve been working really hard on being good enough for fans. itâs been a long time but the main thing is that iâm here now and iâm ready to show my talents from training on stage.â
âwhat do you want your group to be known for?â
simple, sunmi just wanted to be remembered but that was too simple of an answer. âi want my group to be remembered for our power stage presence and versatile sound.â that a little less basic and more heartfelt than the examples they had given her earlier. something to spice it up a bit and sound more genuine. âwe want to be known specifically as and*roma. we know from now on that every time we have a comeback, weâre trying to top what we did before. hopefully we established an âand*romaâ sound.â something that was uniquely them while at the same time exploring different genres.
the ideal type question was one that catches her off guard. when the interviewer asks, âwho is your ideal type of guy?â sunmi almost chokes. it isnât a man, she wants to say but she knows she canât. for the sake of heteronormativity, she plays along with it. âi personally like guys with a strong intellect and a good sense of humour. i like having meaningful conversations but also being able to joke around.â of course she knows in a real interview it would be pressed upon. for the sake of the evaluation, the interviewer passes on.
she gets notes to try not to be so automated. a lot of her responses are. itâs to save face and make sure nothing she says could be used against her. itâs hard because clickbait articles are rampant on the internet always. sunmi takes the notes in mind. she has a while before and*roma gets any type of interview anyways. sheâll be ready when the real deal happens.
she was a little excited about this monthâs evaluation. they were going to be recording their songs this month. it was a little bit of a whirlwind coupled with per_seâs debut which she regrettably hadnât been keeping up with because of everything thatâs been happening to and*roma. she sees the trends on naver and some articles here and there. she finally got to look at the teasers. they look so grown ( especially haknyeon ) and she feels so much fondness for the group. sheâs proud. nova was finally doing something.
because sheâs second eldest in the group, she goes right after solji does. recording doesnât always go so smoothly. sunmi tries her best, knowing that she shouldnât take the most time considering she doesnât have many lines in a lot of the songs. even as she records anything needed ( backing vocals, her lines, supporting vocals or whatever else ) she doesnât feel like itâs really real. it feels like normal training with a special project thrown in for now. she expected debut to feel a little differently. who knows.
it feels like theyâre stretching out the process purposely to give per_se time for debut. which makes sense, considering they needed to build up the attention and popularity. it makes her anxious to follow suit as well and finally be on stage. theyâre supposed to be brother and sister groups. why donât they release songs together or do stages together? maybe thatâll come with time. now, they were building something more long lasting.
outside of training, sunmi tries to focus on and*roma. itâs not that hard, considering they live together and train together. every waking moment is spent with her group. any free time at home she spends with her girlfriend. sunmi is grateful even for the song recordings being little individual sessions. itâs a chance to be away from each other even for half a moment.
sheâs ready to hear the final product but she suspects itâll be another month or two until they finally do.
month: three
week: four - may 26th LIVE CONCERT!
opening dance + freestyle! (1:11-1:20)
hush + omona! (line distribution)
for outfit reference, check back to THIS!
sunmi was beyond ready for the finale of this prison theyâve been subjected to for three months. it was more draining than sunmi initially anticipated. they were together at any given moment. for meals, for practise, to sleep. it was nova kids 24/7. sunmi longed for the isolation of her room and for the comfort of knowing sheâd be alone without anything recording her.
(she knows that for some time after sheâs still going to walk around with a certain stiffness as if expecting a camera to catch a habit of hers even if there isnât any one around her.)
the group had been training together. the practise room was a blend of red and blue and the single gold vest. solji. she had been blessed the the opportunity. sunmi took it upon herself to tell her she was proud of her. she more than deserved the position because she surely was talented. even when the other denied it, sunmi assured her that she has impeccable talent and she deserves to be recognised for it and she deserves to relish in the victory of it. beyond that, the eldest trainee took no notice to vest colours. nor did she ever grow meek for wearing the red vest. unchanged with her interactions with any of the girls despite any comparisons or trickery their ceo tried to commit. she treated them all the same. she wanted them to succeed.
wendy was looking much healthier now. it was a relief of sunmiâs to know that she didnât have to worry about the other as much. they only had a week to fine tune any nicks and hiccups in their performances. sunmi couldnât afford to have to back pedal to make sure no one else was falling apart. if they were, they either didnât come to her or did a damn good job of hiding it. the truth was, the close they came to the finale the more and more tired sunmi felt. she was exhausted and probably didnât have the emotional capacity to try and shoulder someone elseâs problems.
they were almost done. she just wanted it to be over.
she wasnât expecting hui to join her on one of her broodier days but she welcomed the company. the two eldest of the girls and boys respectively. for a moment they were together in silence then in the next, hui said in almost a whisper, âwhat if only the girlss or boyss will get to debut?â sunmiâs shoulders rolled back and she stiffened. she played with this scenario in her mind many times. she tortured herself with it.
hyun bin believed he was being so innovative by making a show in which both genders compete to debut. it was to generate public attention and hype. it was to get the popularity that nova had lost over the years because he so carelessly decided not to debut a group outright. what he didnât care to think of was how many trainees were suffering from this. how many of them were banking on this; both male and female trainees were desperate at this point. half and half. if one goes, the other is at a loss. five years. sunmi canât do this anymore and she knows she canât.
her eyes glaze over a bit. she looks a bit distant. thereâs some sort of ache in her chest. regret. âthen i signed away another 2 years for no reason. iâll be 28 by the time iâm done with nova and if we donât debut now i sure as hell know i wonât be debuted then. iâll have wasted my time and life at this company and i hate that this is the scenario for more than just me.â
he doesnât say something. looking at him through her peripherals tells her he was stewing over her response. she turns to him as he speaks again. âyou think this month will be the end of the line for me?â sunmi wants to scoff. she wants to laugh and tell him heâs being ridiculous. but is he though? they were both here, red vests even after everything theyâve put into this company. told that they were disappointing despite being masters of their specific creed. theyâre not ready. not good enough. humiliated. ignored.
maybe huidong wasnât crazy for thinking so because sunmi was almost certain that no matter what she did, she was still going to be the one going home.
âyou?â she shakes her head. âprobably not. iâve been saying this from the beginning that i felt like this was going to be a boys thing. nova boys. seems like the way to go, no? i wouldnât be surprised if after all this when we watch the show itself that itâs edited for the boys favour mostly while the girls are given smaller snippets.â she doesnât want to sound bitter but she canât help it. how many years have gone by that the nova girls have been given the shorter end of the stick? even if nova has done things that were shared between the two genders, who always had the greater opportunities? the boys. itâs been that way for years and she doubts itâll change now.
âwhatâre they going to do without you? what would they even kick you off for? for saying youâre too old?â sunmi scoffs. the idea sounds so laughable to her. âthen thatâs novaâs fault for taking years to even do something. if they did this years ago, your age wouldnât be the question.â huidong nods although sheâs not sure if itâs because he agrees or because heâs noting that heâs listening to her. sunmi sighs.
âiâm sad bambam got eliminated,â huidong says after a moment. sunmi looks up at him in alarm. âhui opp--â
âas a hyung it was my responsibility.â
sunmi shakes her head, reaching out to touch his arm and grab his attention. âno.â she says this firmly. âitâs not. we feel that need to protect and herd them so we feel that personal responsibility when we lose one or if they fall apart but we cannot take that as a personal fault. itâs not our job to at this moment to make sure they all excel. itâs theirs. we may be a team but itâs time they sink or swim on their own. you canât take that on yourself.â
for a moment she expects huidong to counter her. to say that she was wrong and it was his fault. that he should have gone home instead or ensured that bambam did better. instead he says she was right. âmaybe thatâs what hyun bin was trying to tell me.â
sunmi shakes her head and scoffs. âwho knows what that man is trying to say.â
at some point, sunmi overhears a conversation in which kaeun says she wasnât sorry for taking a spot in the safe zone. she wouldnât give up her chance for it. sunmi realises that if she cared more (or if this was a version of herself from a couple of years ago) she would have gotten angry. insulted. probably would have rounded the corner, curses blazing to tell kaeun off with how insensitive she sounded. the truth was, kaeun was right.
none of them would feel sorry for being safe. none of them would give a moment to look back. because even if sunmi took the time to tell the girls that they should do their damn best, that they got this in them and whatever other encouragements she had for them, they still avoided the blue vests like the plague. awkward. possibly envious. and it was sunmi who wasnât fazed in the end.
instead the elder nods. she only says, âyou should never be sorry,â as she passes. it was the only tidbit she gave to the conversation.
sunmi wasnât expecting a thank you from wendy. it was a surprise. it came up out of the blue after they wrapped up a group practise together before branching off to to individual work. sunmi almost reminded wendy that there was no need to thank her. she would always check to make sure that they were okay. that always went without saying.
wendy insisted regardless and sunmi found herself rolling her eyes (playfully) and pulling the younger into a hug. âi love you all very much, okay? i always want to make sure you guys are doing your best.â she mumbles against wendy although sheâs sure their mics had no problem picking that up.
âyou picked up your freestyle really well,â sunmi said with a smile as jungwoo finished what sunmi promised to be his last full run of the dance for her satisfaction. âyou know youâre going to do phenomenal at the live show, right?â
perhaps it was the approach of the end of this hellish nightmare for them that was making her feel more sentimental than not. even if her demeanor is sometimes stand offish, she opens up well with most, if not all of them. perhaps it was more than just different for jungwoo in particular considering their complex relationship took quite a bit of time to reach where it is now: a point where they could consider each other friends.
the younger boy turns to her, the confusion clear on his face. ânoona are you feeling okay?â sunmi rolls her eyes, playfully (and lightly) smacking at his arm. he still blinks at her like he wasnât sure she was being truthful. sunmi chooses to ignore his expression (and stomps down the urge to call him out on it). instead she adjusts his gold vest so it was straightened and fixes his hair so itâs more orderly. âiâm perfectly fine, jungwoo. iâm just really proud of you okay?â
when she pulls back to look at the younger sheâs surprised to see tears in his eyes. if she said something wrong she wasnât expecting tears. annoyance, maybe but not anything worth crying over. sunmi sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose. âgod, why are you crying right now?â
"iâm just tired you made me do this dance like five times in a row!â he whined defensively. sunmi knew better.
she lightly flicks his forehead. âidiot. go wipe your face. thereâs no need to cry.â
in a feeble attempt to do what she says he wipes his eyes with his sweater sleeve but his face is still pink and tears are still forming. she shakes her head, moving closer to wipe his tears herself. âiâm tired too but youâre doing great,â she says with a smile, knowing it probably did nothing but provoke even more tears from the younger. he looks ready to complain again and she laughs, pulling him to a hug. âyou need to stop teasing me, noona,â he says petulantly although he hugs her back. she pats his head. âyeah but no one can tease you as well as i can.â
the day of the live concert came far too quickly. there was the pre-performance jitters as always. they always mildly plagued the elder but it was never something so incredible that she inhibited her from actually doing the performance. she was happy that the first performance of the night was dancing. hyun bin could slander her skills all he wanted but at least the live audience would be impressed with her dancing (and maybe her performance in the group too) before their ceo trashes her once again in front of thousands of people.
live.
she tried not to be bitter that day. she couldnât let her negative emotions overwhelm her. just a couple more hours from now and this would be all over. she needed to make it through the end. if she could just do it without breaking down completely she would consider it a success.
getting ready probably took a lot longer than she anticipated. in the salon chair, sunmi was just about ready to fall asleep in the chair. thankfully between performances she wasnât going to get much done to her hair and makeup. she would be groggy from the mini naps if that were the case.
in the very least she was wide awake because of the electricity in the air. nerves, excitement. everyone seemed pumped. it kept sunmi awake (after her hair was done). maybe the nerves overrode the excitement that their trials were coming to an end. they still didnât know what they were competing for. they know who was doing best for the boys and girls however they didnât know the overall ranking. where did both genders stand in one ranking? were the boys doing better than the girls? who was the best overall trainee of them?
sunmi had a feeling they were going to learn this after their performances were over.
âweâre almost done,â she tells hyuna as theyâre getting their makeup done. when the artist goes to grab a different brush sunmi takes the opportunity to turn to her. âare you nervous or are you excited?â everyone seems to be a blend of both though for the danger zone people - now finally without their red vests - it was a conflicting feeling.
sunmi has a feeling that by the end of this, sheâs still going to be ranked low. she feels it. itâs like inevitability. it was the only thing sheâs heard since coming to nova. criticisms. it was never that she was good enough or praised. she wasnât rewarded like she was in sphere. it wasnât the same. she was fully prepared for hyun bin to tell her she stays in her danger zone position and sheâs out of the running to debut. the old man thinks heâs being dramatic or cute by doing such a thing. it would only make him an idiot for benching a veteran trainee. one that heâd surely lose after this, at that.
sunmi doesnât voice this to hyuna, however. she lets the cynical thoughts circle in her mind. the thoughts that left her (apologetically) distracted that she didnât get hyunaâs answer. instead she reaches across their makeup chairs to grab her hand and squeeze it. âash,â she starts in english, âno matter what happens...â she finishes in korean, âyou did so amazingly well. you made it to the end. thatâs something to be proud of, okay? itâs an accomplishment.â if hyuna loses, it wouldnât feel like much of an accomplishment because she wasnât debuting. sunmi wouldnât fault her if she ultimately felt that way. but she knows that itâs what a lot of them need right now: being told that they did well. if hyun bin wasnât going to be that person then so be it.
sunmi was fine with standing in and doing just that.
they were ready to go up for the âintroâ of the concert so to speak. they had practised this specific routine for the last two weeks. sunmi hoped this all served them well and that hopefully the order does them some good. suddenly sunmi thinks they should have considered dancing skill comparison when choosing the order so nobody gets upstaged but itâs too late the back track now.
sunmi has her pinky looped around wendyâs as they stand off waiting for the cue to go on stage. the urge of softness and kindness hasnât left her all month, especially when she seems so set on her next move should this end badly. it was best to get all the kindness out now before sunmi (inevitably) turns sour from this experience.
âyou know, wen, i am so proud of you,â she tells the younger in english. a number of the nova girls spoke english as well so it wasnât like she was attempting to disguise her conversation. it just felt more natural between them to speak in the language they both shared. she looked down at wendy, who was looking back up at her with wide eyes. âi am. you really pulled yourself together. youâre going to kill it today, you understand? youâre going to do amazing and i couldnât be prouder. i love you a lot.â
there was something about telling people things that they donât believe themselves: they cry. theyâre not prepared for people to tell them that because itâs been so long since they heard an affirmation like that that they stopped believing. jungwoo cried, hyuna cried and now wendy had tears threatening to spill as well. sunmi was quick to reach for a napkin to dab at the tears. wendy laughed despite her tears.
âyou know, sunmi unnie, the last person to tell me that was my mum.â sunmi paused, looking at wendy. âon our last phone call together. thatâs what she told me too.â sunmi felt her heart twist. of course she wasnât anyones real mother in nova. some âkidsâ only were a year younger than her. in hyuna and soljiâs case they were the same age as sunmi so it wasnât like she was their mother either. but to the younger ones; the ones with a clear age gap between them like sunmi and wendyâs 5 years, sunmi was a parental figure away from home. haknyeon has said it multiple times (even going as far as to openly call her âmomâ several times), ricky at one point had commented it as well.
sunmi didnât want kids. sheâs not sure that stance will ever change. (itâs not like she can have them anyways, while dating jinkyung.) but even if she ever changed her mind she already has so many with the people in nova. it was enough for her.
sunmi never thought that nova would amount to sphere. she was right. by company standards, nova will never mean to her what sphere did. but the people? the people are just as much family as the old sphere trainees were. the nova trainees were her favourite and only pro to being in nova. theyâre the reason she stays time and time again. maybe itâs time to let the birds leave the nest. or, rather, for the mama to.
sunmi doesnât think about it for the rest of the night.
she dances her ass off. she was being serious when she said that dances made for girl groups were always lack lustre and boring to watch. they were meant to show how sexy and pretty the girls were as if thatâs all they were capable of doing. sunmi not only kicked down that stereo type but she choke slammed it with her tough popping centre dance.
screw girls only being sexy for their freestyles while boys get to be impressive. it wasnât cool nor fair and sunmi wasnât about to play into the agenda of being just eye candy when debut was at stake. she wasnât sure if they were going to catch her pop up jump at the very end but god sheâd be so angry if it doesnât make it into the episode cut. it was the best part. sometimes camera work was notorious for being extraordinarily shitty. she didnât suffer with bruised legs for them to not catch it.
truthfully sunmi wasnât a fan of either song. though they were clearly supposed to represent 2 different vibes they were ultimately the same. although omona was more overtly feel good and cute, it still had these elements of maturity and sensuality that made the slow-paced song just a bit odd for sunmi. while hush was clearly supposed to be more sexy (at least thatâs what parts of the choreography suggested) but there were parts that were just....cute. or was it the way the girls sang it that it sounded very cutesy to sunmiâs ears?
she tried not to be pessimistic especially when she felt like the boys were going to have something more energetic and diverse in sound that the girls were going to pale in comparison. it wouldnât be fair in the end because these were songs they were handed but at least it would confirm to sunmi that the girls were always set up to fail in lieu of the boys taking centre of the entire project itself. it only left her to be annoyed as to why hyun bin would do all this but she couldnât get ahead of herself. they had two original songs to perform. so for just about 8 minutes, sunmi would have to put on a mask and perform as if sheâs all-in with the song. idols did it all the time. she can do it for her final live performances of the super nova project at the very least.
sunmi felt antsy.
she was glad to get their final performance out of the way but now this meant for their coaches and ceo to deliberate live in real time and deliver the results. there wasnât any doubt that hyun bin was going to drag this on for suspense but sunmi was really ready to get this over with.
she kept saying this. maybe if she convinced herself enough that she wanted this over with sheâd be less disappointed when it actually was. the mantra kept playing over and over in her head. sunmi even had a bit of trouble staying still in her spot. her bed was so close yet so far. she needed to know the nightmare was over.
then finally they got ready to start. this was it. it was time. sunmi figures itâll take just about ten or fifteen minutes for the final results and explanations to come out. then, after that they will be free to go. free to collect their phones and free to pack he hell up and sleep. she was ready she was so ready for it.
the minute the nova ceo got ready to speak, sunmi felt her stomach drop. maybe she was bullshitting herself. because in that moment, seeing the microphone in his hand she realised: sunmi wasnât ready to hear the final fate of her career. this was her last shot and his words had more weight than even he realised.
a part of her wasnât ready for this to be the end.
âďž.*ď˝Ľď˝Ąďž SN PROJECT INDIVIDUAL MEETING ËËË
assigned coach: Yonghwa
date: May 17th
they had spent the week learning their choreographies for the opening stages for the final live concert they were having to mark the end of the sn project. it wouldnât surprise sunmi if thatâs what yonghwa was interested in discussing. as expected, it was the first thing he asked.
âhave you ever noticed that when it comes to girls and boys stages thereâs a large difference between them? girlsâ choreography is usually to be sexy and to show off how pretty the girls are. theyâre eye candy even if the girls are famously amazing dancers. but boys: theyâre allowed to show off their technical excellence. theyâre flipping and jumping and showing off some great moves.â yonghwa narrowed his eyes and asked where she was getting at with the statement.Â
âi havenât seen the boys choreography but i will bet you right now that theirs will be more choreographically impressive in the group portion than ours. because as a choreographer, how dance is very sexy. very âlook at me iâm a pretty girlâ so i wouldnât be surprised if theirs was stronger.â
âso then what are you going to do with your freestyle? are you going to make it boyish?â
sunmi shook her head. âit isnât the fact of making it boyish. iâm going to show off that girls can do just as impressive technical dances as guys can. to show that companies can stop giving their female dancers the safe and pretty routine and give us something more challenging. i like to break the mold so thatâs what iâm going to do. it will be more aggressive but i resent saying itâs more boyish. iâd say the dance is more sunmi-ish.â
yonghwa nodded although not betraying any emotions on the matter. âdo you feel like itâs also to outshine the other girls?â sunmi knew what he was playing at. she wasnât going to give it to him.
âthe whole point of the opening dance is to show their colours. nova is a known for its dancing. each girl is going to show their specialty. popping is mine. iâve been dancing for as long as i could remember. so thatâs what my portion is going to be. i canât speak on the other girlâs dance because we havenât done a run through with everyone doing their freestyle yet. weâll be doing that tomorrow but i have confidence that all of the girls will do amazing.â

month: two
week: four CONCERT! - april 28th
canon list
this was something that made it feel all the more real. a concert. and it was a decent sized one for just a trainee concert. 500 people seemed like a lot more when youâre not in the position to regularly earn fans and increase numbers to stadium size. it was actually quite exciting. nova doesnât do stuff like this for them alone. it felt different than the jeju concert because they were using the trainee stages as a âwatch out for whoâs nextâ kind of deal. this was a full concert for themselves. they had just about an hour on this stage.
sunmi actually enjoyed getting dressed and ready. they really got to see the song concepts come alive. she was excited to perform, excited to see the reactions. it was a nice ....reward, almost? like a âhere, this was what you were missing out on all those years in novaâs basementâ. it didnât make up for the fact that while they were just fucking around doing nothing, their peers were debuting but it was about damn time they did something similar to the other companies.
she was especially excited for the reaction to their blood, sweat & tears stage. it was a remix to the original song that hyuna and wendy made. because the song was different, sunmi altered (greatly altered) the choreography to make it suitable to the new sound. sheâs not expecting to get praised for their creativity but she hopes itâs something to be considered when theyâre ranking everyone in the end.
it would be a lie to say that sunmi was 100% confident that they would do the best. there were other teams that probably had stronger set ups. at the end of the day, not everyone had the same arrangement of skills in their group. it wouldnât be the same for everyone. thatâs why sunmi was a little happy that they had a diverse lineup. the skill match-ups in each song varied. in one song the killing point was the dance, the other vocals, one had a rap and vocal killing point. it was diverse.
she had a good feeling about it. at least this time they had more of a choice with where things were going. sheâd be damned if she was going to hear hyun bin say their choices were weak a second time. but they were in territory of individual evaluations so it was very much so a possibility that hyun bin would destroy the esteem of whomever his target was and tell them that they were weak instead.
sunmi wasnât sure what content they were getting at this point during the concert. would they only show the performances and nothing else or would they catch shots of them getting ready in the mirrors, joking and playing around to calm their nerves? who knows what they were filming at this rate. someone might like it (maybe like one person) but how many people would want to know what they were doing back stage in between performances they actually wanted to see? then again, it was going on youtube. they could easily show a behind the scenes video.
every time her team goes up to perform, she says a quick âwe got this!â before going on stage just to keep morale up. though there was nothing to really bring them down. everyone outside was expecting a performance. they were getting the cheers regardless. it was a good feeling.
sunmi was obviously feeling good. she was nothing but smiles and good vibes all day both on stage and off. she wished everyone luck before their performances and she was genuinely proud when they came back downstairs looking accomplished. now for them to go back to the dorms for a few days and wait for hyunbinâs evaluations to burst everyoneâs good feelings.
at least theyâd have a day or two before that, right?
she loathes hyun bin and his dramatics. yet for the sake of her image, she doesnât roll her eyes when he calls them to order. she isnât surprised with the mention of eliminations although sheâs curious (and worried) to see who will go. she listens stiffly. though sheâs not anxious, she wishes he would cut with the dramatics and that they werenât forced to pause, wait and reset (remembering their reactions) for re-filming. filming the evaluations makes it feel a lot less authentic. sunmi would rather they get over it. however she keeps her hands clasped in front of her as the continue.
genuine surprise comes onto her features when he announces mvp. she didnât expect it for herself (she already saw what direction the âshowâ was going in so she wouldnât dare hope for mvp) but she wasnât expecting solji and jungwoo to be chosen. colour her impressed by their new mvps of the week. she nods in approval. sheâs sure solji doesnât look (or catch her) but she shoots her a thumbs up.
hearing everyone get their new positions was....something. there was a certain game hyun bin was playing here. sunmi could feel it. of course she wouldnât know until the episodes air (when are they airing anyways?) but the suspicion falls away to shock when wendy is told to move back into danger zone. she looks around at the coaches, the cameras anyone to give away that this was a joke.
then it came down the line to her again. the last person to be spoken of. thereâs got to be a reason why sheâs been brought up last both times because she doesnât think thatâs coincidental. and if it was what she thought it was, there was no fucking way she ranked bottom of all the girls because then hyun bin must be smoking something and whatever it was, sunmi needed a hit of it.
this time instead of pinning her against meiqi, they did so with kaeun. after some dramatic tension, sunmi was told to move to the danger zone. with a tongue in her cheek sunmi stepped back with the other danger zone people. she was clearly annoyed (read: pissed) because none of this has been making any sense so far. for the first time since coming, she truly felt like cursing purposely.
she knew she couldnât let the anger seep (at the moment) because once hyun bin left, it was like a breath was let out and all composure collapsed. sunmi had to put on her big girl leader pants and assure that everyone was okay including bambam. getting eliminated was not something ideal especially for someone like him. heâs been here so long and heâs worked hard. it was disappointing. she didnât want him to feel like he was forgotten in this collective buzz of tears and frustration (because he wasnât).
sunmi just knew she needed some space to breathe tonight or else the girls were going to see a really ugly side of her she didnât want to show.
month: three
week: two ( may 5th - may 11th )
location: dance studio
itâs late at night during the second week of the final month of the project. the large digital clock on the wall displays it saying itâs past 1 am. sunmi had been there since around 7 pm. she didnât go upstairs with the others to eat dinner. the numbers of girls in the room with her eventually dwindled as the night went on. by 1, she was left alone in the studio.
âmy initial plan was to just work on songs nothing more,â sunmi says to the camera while looking off on the mirrored wall. âi was going to keep practising singing and try to do what i can to sound good but...â sheâd paused to take a drink of water. âi donât want to strain my voice.â she pulls her knees to her chest, she (and the cameras) can see the bruises on her leg. they donât look too dark but thereâs a few of them. rather than ignore them, she chose to address them.
âiâm really skinny so i bruise easily in some places,â she explains. she points to her knees where the bruises are worse. âi dance really hard even when practising so if iâm doing drops and stuff repeatedly as i practice, i get bruises.â she wasnât fragile. she could take a hit or two, but she was definitely left looking darker marked than other people would be. âiâll be fine! it doesnât hurt or anything....â
she sits back to finish her water. the break takes all of 8 minutes before sheâs back up to at least dancing. she starts to sing again when she feels like sheâs rested her throat a little. she doesnât go back upstairs to shower and crawl into bed until itâs closer to 4 am. this repeats a lot. sometimes she goes to bed at 4, sometimes a little before. but never is she ever out of the practise rooms before 3 am. while this isnât an unfamiliar sight to the cameras (sunmi has been consistently sleeping late since the sn project started) itâs never been so bad that itâs continued like this for weeks on end without pause. usually, sheâd have a couple of days where sheâd called it in when training is over or only stay a little after (far before 3). sunmi has been staying late since the final month started.
it doesnât look like that will change any time soon.
