“THE TIMID”

Nova Santos was meant for better things. Despite being born as half the set of a pair of identical twins, she entered the world to a mother who already had four other children and a spouse that would barely ever offer his family any support. Erica Santos did the best that she could with the birth of her two new bundles of joy but when the situation became a little too much to handle, she figured that it was time to give her children a fighting chance to become someone in the world so she scooped up four year old Nova and Zara one evening when Santiago was asleep due to a drunken haze and carried them all the way to the local church where there was also an orphanage that was run by the local nuns. She looked at her two little girls with tears in her eyes as she placed a little name tag on each of them so that they would be able to tell them apart - despite the girls being able to identify themselves just fine if they were asked. The little girls didn’t understand what was happening at the time but when Erica said her final goodbye, the twins instinctively just held hands and sat down on the steps together as they huddled under a small blanket their mother had left them until morning. The next morning rolled around as the little girls slept at the door of the orphanage but soon enough, the nuns were waking them up with gentle tones and asking them question. While the little girls didn’t know a single thing as to why they were there, they were brought inside where they were given food, bed and plenty of new friends. It only took them a month of residing in the orphanage to figure out that they would never see their mother, father or siblings ever again.

A few years passed by and the girls seemed to be thriving happily in the orphanage, gaining themselves the reputation of being well behaved and developing perfect manners. They were eight years old when a couple came to the orphanage and fell instantly in love with them. However, the couple had not been looking for a set. They only wanted one little girl. They would talk to both Nova and Zara on their owns but ultimately, Zara won because of her more extraverted nature opposed to Nova’s natural shyness. After all, they were true ying and yang to a fault. It was a cold November day when Nova had to say goodbye to her twin sister forever as tears streamed down both their faces, holding her sister in a tight embrace before she was pulled away. The only remnant of her twin was a small necklace that said ‘thing 2’ while Zara’s happened to say ‘thing 1’. The day that Zara left her side was that day that Nova felt herself recede into herself and become a completely different person.

By the age of ten, Nova had chosen to stop talking. She would only talk to the nuns or people around her that she felt close enough to but anyone else? They were greeted with a silent stare as she began to scribble on a notebook whatever she had to say. The nuns all took note of her behavior and watched her to see if she showed any signs of distress or mental issues but Nova was actually happier mute than she’d ever been when she’d been willingly speaking to everyone around her. It almost seemed to work for her personality type despite underlying concerns. More years passed as Nova continued her path of selective speechlessness and she was soon breezing through her schooling since she didn’t have the distractions of the world around her. However, she had slowly but surely stopped forming friendships with other people her age and at fourteen, found herself completely friendless except for the teddy bear she had since she arrived at the orphanage itself. Or the nuns. To find a way to distract from that idea, Nova began to take an interest in astronomy (after looking up the meaning of her name) and anything that would allow her to be creative; painting, drawing, and especially photography. She looked at the stars and saw a vast world filled with silence but endless possibilities that nobody knew about yet - which was exactly how she perceived herself. With the little money she gained from doing small jobs for locals, Nova bought her very first telescope and spent her nights staring out the window with glee. When she wasn’t doing her homework or studying, she’d be found on her bed drawing in a sketchbook the nuns had gifted her or playing with an old Polaroid camera that she found at a yard sale. It all came natural as the nuns soon began to embrace her work and offer her more tools to develop herself even further since they saw just how content she was. Something that had never truly been lit in her eyes after Zara left.

Nova was sixteen when a vampire by the name of Lavender Thompson came to the orphanage - actually being one of the big contributors to ensure that it remained open for all of these lost children. Lavender was smitten by the works of art and photographs that hung on the walls of the hallowed halls that she asked to speak with the person who created them but it was safe to say that Nova didn’t say a word in response. But boy did she write. Her pen didn’t move from that paper one bit as she had her conversation with Lavender as happiness flooded her eyes at the chance to talk about something she adored. Lavender was taken so strongly by the seemingly mute teenager that on that very day, she began the process of adoption; something that Nova didn’t think she would ever be lucky enough to receive. It was a quick process and Nova was soon packing up the little belongings that she had, saying goodbye to the nuns with happy tears in her eyes and traveling with Lavender to the small town of Shadow Falls.

The vampire gave Nova time to adjust to the sudden change before she sent her on her way to the local high school. She was ridiculous overwhelmed. Nova had never quite been around others her age so she felt anxious and confused the first few months. Her teachers were well aware of the fact that she was not one to talk but fellow students also took note of that and she became the target of some very harsh bullying which caused her to go home crying almost every single day. It got to the point that remaining speechless wasn’t an option and the very first words she ever said to Lavender were ‘everyone’s so mean here, I want to go back to the orphanage’. The vampire mothers heart shattered because she knew that the world would only get harder for someone as fragile as Nova when people realized that she was a human being raised by a three hundred year old vampire but she offered Nova all the comfort she needed to push forward. And she did. Oh, she definitely did. Despite feeling uncomfortable, Nova made moves to start talking to others as her love for photography and astronomy only got bigger. She was never a popular girl but she had her tiny group of friends by the time that she graduated high school which was more than she could have asked for. It was more than she’d ever known. Nova knew that she didn’t want to go away for college so she settled for the local university so that she wouldn’t go back to her old ways, especially when she had grown very attached to her adoptive mother. Her first year of college was her worst year by far. It was a miracle that she even survived but it was all thanks to Lavender who never allowed her to give up on her dreams. No matter how scared Nova was. It was during that time that Nova also was gifted with the chance to change her last name so that legally she was Lavenders child even if she wasn’t biological. She took it. She held onto it. This was her new life and she had to own it with pride.

After recently graduating with a degree in Astronomy, Nova doesn’t quite know what to do with herself because the only job that has truly ever interested her was in a museum in the big city but her shyness got the best of her and she blew it. So, she’s settled to working as a receptionist at the Inn until she can manage to gather her courage to get a job where she can actually excel in a career she’s always dreamed of. Lavender has always told her that everything will fall in to place when the time is ready but Nova has never quite understood what that means.
