A few words about I Lost My Body
I’m a big fan of 2D animations. Especially the old Disney movies. And I wish Disney would make a beautiful 2D animated movie, like in the old days (I wasn’t alive back then, but you know, what I mean). I know 3D can look gorgeous, and it’s cheaper, but, you know, it’s not the same. Like, imagen Moana as a 2D animation. Right?
So lately I’m trying to support these kind of movies (because 2D animated series go out all the time), just to show, that there is public for that kind of entertainment. Shurly, I wouldn’t go to the cinema on a Barbie movie for little kids, but when, for example, Disney would have made a kids movie, you know, that you’ll probably have fun on it too.
This piece isn’t about any big movie or even about a movie, that was in the cinemas (maybe in a selected few), but about an Netflix original. Yes, Netflix lately released two animated movies, I Lost My Body (2019) and Klaus (2019). I’m pretty sure Klaus (2019) is 2D, so I’m gonna count it in. And I decided to watch both of them, even if they would be just average, just to show, you know, that it worth the money.
And boy oh boy, they both have good reviews, so I’m happy for that. Although I didn’t see Klaus (2019), I have seen I Lost My Body (2019) and it’s great.
I have to say it, it’s weird, to watch not in English, or polish, or even german. When I started to watch this, I was sitting with my phone, and a few seconds, after they started to talk (because this movie has a lot of dialog, but only for like a half in total), I realised, that I don’t understand any of it.
If I had to put my opinion in one word, it would be "beautiful". Beside of the art stile, which is gorgeous, the story is just life like. Without the walking hand, obviously. A guy, wanting a better life for himself, meets a girl, quits his job, finds a more satisfying one, to be closer, to the girl, he likes. Also moves moves out from his step family.
The story is sad, but you keep watching, since his live is getting a bit better and better every know and then. It's also beautifully mixed with his sad backstories. Mixed with scenes, where his hand is having some some crazy adventures, trying to get back to him. All it together was investing, entertaining and hearth touching at the same time.
Although, I have to say, stalking isn't a good way to go and I'm glad, they showed it.
The art is just outstanding. Truly gorgeous. Just a bit slowly. I mean, you can see, that they didn't have a lot of money, I'm not sure they have 22 fps, but it is not conspicuous that much. Also, it rewards you with the story.
I talked about the story a bit, and I want to ad something about the characters. They were solid. At least most of them. I still don't know, what was that guy's deal. He adopted him And he was just for a few seconds. Noufel was discussed in the story part, a reliable character. The same could told about Gabrielle. She listens to music a lot, works in a library, orders pizza alone. You can tell, that she's an introvert, like me, and I get her. So cool. The rest were just side characters, but they had a big role in Noufel's backstory. No one not important I guess.
The ending was a bit disappointing for me tho. I get, that it was open to interpretation and I should tell myself the rest of the story. And I do, and it has an happy ending. And in my ending the hand is living his own life as a adventurer. I'm not sure, how that would work, but since is just fantasy, this is mine.
Now it's time to watch Klaus (2019). Hope it's as good, as it is beautiful.
And Netflix, don't disappoint and invest more in 2D animated movies. It's a good idea. If you won't, who will?
