X-Factor didn’t typically reach out to any other groups for help. No, actually... That wasn’t quite right. Rictor didn’t usually reach out to other groups for help. He’d been very reliably informed that he was often needlessly reckless, told time and time again that he’d get himself killed if he didn’t ask for some help when he got in over his head. He wasn’t sure what was different about today, didn’t know why he felt compelled to call for a helping hand, but... He found he was kind of glad he did.

What was meant to be a simple case was now a shootout, with Ric crouched behind a metal storage container with Laura. “If I could see them, I could quake them to hell,” he said, “but it’s a little hard to see on account of all the bullets.” He didn’t sound particularly concerned by this fact. “What’ve you got, Wolverine? Hope your strategies are a lot better than Logan’s, because this is the part where he’d ditch me to go get a beer.”

It was far from the first time he’d heard it. Warren told him once, after far too many drinks and no small amount of takeout, that he’d tear himself apart someday. ‘You keep going like this, Scott,’ he’d warned, ‘and it’ll kill you. Nobody’s asking you to take the world on your shoulders. The only person who thinks you ought to carry that weight is you.’ He’d been right... but only to a certain extent. Nobody asked Scott to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders, but plenty of people expected him to. His father certainly had, back when he was a kid.

But Laura? Laura didn’t seem to expect it from him at all. In fact, Scott didn’t know what Laura expected of him. It was a little disconcerting. 

He’d been quiet a beat too long now, her words washing over him as he mulled them over. Finally, he offered her a wry smile that didn’t quite meet his eyes, a tiny shrug that was scarcely more than a twitch of his shoulder. “I don’t really know how,” he admitted. “Guess it’s easier said than done.”
