“I can’t do this right now. I’m going for a run,” Honey snapped. 

Damion and I are engaged, but we haven’t started planning our wedding. In fact, we still haven’t saved a date. I’m not sure if its patience or practicality that causes our delay. After all, we were engaged before our graduation day and waited longer still to announce the news. I suppose, even after all these years, even with my fancy job and my rocket scientist’s brain and my physics degree, I am still afraid. They day my mother ran from the altar on the day of her multi-million dollar wedding is still as vivid to me as the day I donned my flower girl garb. It was the only day I’d ever seen my dad cry.

I still think about my life before University, of course. The long nights I spent wandering the city to avoid my mother’s eclectic string of lovers. Gym trainers, maids, business men, concert pianists, and her guiltiest pleasure, her cocaine dealer. I fell in love with San Myshuno during those times. I’d skate to the noodle stand and warm my heart with dinner. It’s hard to believe I ever felt unwelcome in my own home. Yet, I did, penthouse or no. Now here I sit, between my dad and my fiance, on my own sofa. And as I sit, I know my dad does not care for Damion. He’s kind enough. But I can see in the way he holds himself that thought Damion would be a college boyfriend and nothing beyond.
