the protagonist, notik, is an orphan--nothing uncommon in their time--who's already part of a group of other orphans, misfits, Strugglers(tm) who are all just looking to get by--also not an uncommon thing for people to do. they're mostly a junk collector and aspiring mechanic, an approachable everyman and 'get shit done' sort, softhearted and open.
