Kishimoto's initial draft of Gaara
Gaara was originally called "雲丸/Kumomaru" (hence the Kumogakure forehead protector) and was supposed to have a dog called "まんじ/Manji" (hence the 卍)
At first Kishi planned for Gaara to be a 7 yo kid who would go crazy due to drug usage... yikes. Thankfully the reason was changed to trauma and Shukaku's control. It looks like the drug idea turned out to be curse marks and was given to other characters. And Manji became Shukaku, a tanuki (raccoon dog), judging by the black fur around the eyes.
