Northside High School’s student newspaper, The HoofBeat, reports on a student’s efforts to bring a hoop house to the school. Kudos to Maeve Masterson!
One of the best aspects of Northside is that students are always looking for ways to better the community. Maeve Masterson, Adv. 804, recently found a way to contribute to Northside in a new and interesting way. She is in the process of creating a hoop house, a structure similar to a greenhouse, where students will be able to plant vegetables. “I am hoping that this hoop house can bring about a hands-on, experiential way of learning as they delve into topics such as ecology, food, water, energy, allocation of resources, conservation, health, sustainability, waste, and gardening; topics that may be unfamiliar, but have an enormous impact on our future,” says Masterson. After working at a farm in Michigan this summer and participating in a sustainability workshop, she saw the importance of being more environmentally conscious. She hopes that the school can serve as an example for others by creating the hoop house next to the celestial garden. Though this spot is not yet cleared, it will be ready for a “hoop raising” event that will take place in December and will be open to the Northside community.
