Photo by @amivitale. Congratulations to Dan Hammer (@econohammer), winner of the first ever Pritzker Emerging Environmental Genius Award. Dan is the co-founder of Earth Genome, a nonprofit organization that seeks to put environmental data in the hands of decision makers. His current project, Overview News, would give journalists and other storytellers easy access to satellite imagery—and help them understand it. The end goal is supporting environmental news that is more lucid and reliable. I'm thrilled to have nominated Katie Rowe who is representing the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) in Northern #Kenya. She recognized one simple truth - without local communities engaged and leading the effort, no conservation effort, no social effort for that matter, will ever be truly sustainable. Her selflessness, her determination, her grit, and her unfailing faith that the communities she serves will protect that which she loves, has helped create a new model for #conservation. A new model that pushes the boundaries on what wildlife conservation looks like. It's not easy and for each step forward there is a step back, but in that complexity and inelegance, in that diversity and chaos, is truly the way forward.
