Weathered Cardinal
I can’t help noticing how the eye sockets on this molting northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) resemble those of certain reptiles. There’s something in the shape and the exposed skin that hints at a deeper evolutionary story.

It turned out to be a great morning for birding today! With migration season here, many interesting birds are visiting the Greenbelt. I heard a peculiar call, which I thought was an Oriole, but it turned out to be a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak! Still cool! I hope to get a good shot of an Oriole someday.
