After our offer on 19 Glendale Circle was rejected (see Part 3), we went out the following weekend on May 15th to see five different houses across three different towns.

The original plan was to see 4 houses but were were able to squeeze another one in at the last minute (more on that later).

Our first stop was in Andover at 86 Poor Street.

This house is a raised Ranch and the inside was alright.  The kitchen was absolutely stunning and you could tell that when compared to the rest of the house, the owners had really spent their time making the kitchen the stand0out bit.  Unfortunately the lower level wasn’t as finished as we had hoped and the yard was really quite lacking.

We drove about 8 minutes to the next house, 111 Greenwood Road.

This was another raised ranch, more square footage, more land, more finished space in the basement.  The upper level was pretty nice-nothing spectacular but definitely livable.  The finished space in the basement would have been a nice rec room, but the flooring seemed to have been installed without a subfloor, as it was quite uneven.  Another thing about this house which was that it had electric heat.  It wasn’t a deal breaker for us, but it also wasn’t really a selling point.

Our third house of the day was 52 Abbott Road in North Reading.

This house looked beautiful in the pictures, but we did not feel that the property in real life lived up to the photos.  The kitchen was gorgeous and wonderfully decorated but the layout of the rest of the house was odd.  It was really only a 2 bedroom house (the 3rd did not have a closet).  There was also a strange bonus room attached to the garage that the current owners were using for a bar/hangout area, but we couldn’t see any use for it to meet our needs so it wasn’t a selling point at all.

We hopped over to Wilmington to see 1 Rhode Island Rd.

This was the property that we squeezed into our schedule and boy was it worth it.  We did miss the open house but the sellers were kind enough to let us view it late.  This is a gambrel style house, which I was unfamiliar with, but do quite like.  This property was actually a lot better than the photos made us believe.  I really love the kitchen with it’s large island, as well as the front-to-back living room.  There’s finished basement space that would be good as office space for Chris but also serve a dual purpose as a rec room.  We thought that this home needed some decorating changes on the inside (paint colors, carpets, and lighting and door upgrades) but those are merely cosmetic.

We drove across Wilmington to 35A Crescent Street, our last showing of the day.

We saw this property during an open house.  It seemed as though we were the first people to arrive, which made me nervous since every other open house we had been to was slammed from the beginning.  Compared to the previous house (same architectural style) this one was a disappointment.  It was significantly cheaper than the previous house but also needed a good deal more work to be up to the style we are looking for.  Chris would like to point out that the basement of this house was like a time capsule-there was a room that was legit straight out of the ‘80s.  Like the owner close a door in 1985 and did not open it until the open house that day.  Crazy.

In the end we chose to make an offer on 1 Rhode Island Road in Wilmington.  In my next post I’ll go through the process of making an offer in much greater detail.
