Erik greeted her in the doorway wearing a purple apron with the words 'Obey and kiss the cook' embroidered onto it alongside some skulls and flowers. The invitation was far too good to pass up, so Cecilé pulled him down for a quick kiss before he could even invite her inside.
âOh wow, hello to you too,â Erik mumbled, trying to keep his blush under control while he ushered her inside.
âIt smells delicious,â CecilĂ© flashed him a smile as he hung up her jacket for her. âIf they taste anything near as good as they smell you might be in the wrong profession.â
âLesson number 5 you learn as a parent: cookies are great bribery,â Erik chuckled.
âI'll keep that in mind.â CecilĂ© laughed and dusted some flour off his apron.
âCĂ©cile!â HalldĂłr cried in excitement and ran right into her legs, hugging her tightly.
âWhat a welcome committee!â CĂ©cile laughed as she lifted HalldĂłr up, lamenting the flour and dough stains he added to her clothes for just a brief moment. HalldĂłr was sporting a matching purple apron, with the words 'I make the rules' and with what CĂ©cile gathered had to be trolls embroidered onto his.
âDad's tying to put raisins in all the cookies, you have to stop him!â HalldĂłr said worriedly.
âRaisins?â CĂ©cile turned and gave Erik a look of disgust. âThat is a culinary no-no,â
âYou're siding with him?â Erik frowned.
âI'm siding with good taste, something you clearly don't have,â CĂ©cile stuck her tongue out at him.
âDoes that include my taste in women?â Erik raised an eyebrow and CĂ©cile gaped.
âOh my god,â she whispered. âYou are awful,â she added â cheeks red â she'd walked right into that one.
âI can't tell who's supposed to be more offended about that. Natalia or me...â she muttered.
âI'll give here a call and ask her later,â Erik laughed and leant in to kiss her cheek.
âYou don't deserve kisses!â HalldĂłr huffed and pushed Erik's face away from CĂ©cile before he could get too close.
âKeep that up or you're getting nothing but raisin cookies for a month,â Erik warned.
âThat is an awful punishment Erik,â CĂ©cile laughed. âYou can't do that to your own son!â
âFine. A week,â Erik grumbled and crossed his arms.
âHe's being mean!â HalldĂłr whimpered and CĂ©cile could see HalldĂłr was just as much in on the joke as Erik was.
Father and son were frighteningly similar at times.
âYes he is,â she agreed and patted HalldĂłr's head affectionately. âI'll punish him accordingly later,â she reassured him, winking at Erik when HalldĂłr didn't see.
âWith chains?â HalldĂłr asked gravely.
âYes,â CĂ©cile replied, trying to ignore the fact that Erik was now grinning like a fool at her.
âRight okay, fine,â Erik sighed. âChocolate chip cookies it is...â
âYay!â HalldĂłr threw his hands in the air and giggled.
âDemocracy wins once more,â CĂ©cile smiled.
âThat was nothing short of bribery,â Erik retorted coolly.
âShush you,â CĂ©cile waved him off after setting HalldĂłr down on the floor and watching the little boy run straight for the kitchen. âWe saved you from a bad decision,â
âBut I like raisins in cookies...â Erik mumbled.
âThen we make a small batch of nasty cookies for you, and HalldĂłr and I will eat the tasty ones, perfect plan or what?â
âSure,â Erik snorted.
âExcellent,â CĂ©cile hummed and headed for the kitchen, trying not to laugh at the mess of flour and dough that met her. Poor Erik. His nice and pristine kitchen would not recover from this for a good week.
âYou'd think his pale hair was white enough,â Erik sighed. âBut no, he has to go and shower himself and the kitchen in flour,â
âHe looks like a little snow child,â CĂ©cile giggled.
âThat's not necessarily a step up from his usual troll-child self,â Erik frowned. âHe's going to be dragging flour all around the house at this rate,â
âI'll help you contain and clean it up,â CĂ©cile reassured him.
âOh, that reminds me,â Erik lowered his voice. âUh, about that family dinner invitation...â
âHm?â
âYou don't have to attend if you don't want to...â Erik said.
âDon't you want me there?â
âWhat? No! I mean...â Erik bit his lip. âIt's just.. my brothers can be a bit, intense,â he sighed.
âYou're talking to the woman with French and Italian family members,â CĂ©cile laughed.
âDid your brother get you lost in the woods or take bets on who could break the most bones in one year?â Erik looked at her questionably.
âUh...â CĂ©cile paused. âNo... Francis mostly used me as a doll to dress up...â
âWell, Preben and Björn still have the bet going,â Erik frowned.
âWho's in the lead?â CĂ©cile asked and smiled.
âPreben actually,â Erik replied and rolled his eyes. âFell of his bike in January and broke his collar bone, left arm and five ribs, so he's now two fractures over Björn's total tally.â
âThey sound delightful,â CĂ©cile laughed softly. âSo don't worry,â she stood on her toes and kissed his cheek. âI promise not to run away,â
âBut if they make you uncomfortable in any way, you tell me and I'll give them both more fractures to add to their list,â
âMy hero,â CĂ©cile smiled brightly. âBut honestly, I'm looking forward to meeting them. But I might in retaliation drag you along to a family dinner with my side,â
âDo I have to wear a suit?â
âYes,â
âUrgh. Fair enough,â Erik sighed.
âJust because you work from home doesn't mean you should always walk around in jeans and woolly jumpers,â CĂ©cile stifled a laugh and tugged at his apron. âAlthough you should wear this more often. You suit it,â
âWith more or less clothes underneath?â Erik asked coyly.
âOnce your son goes to bed...well, then I think you should wear only the apron,â CĂ©cile smirked.
âRemind me to lock the bedroom door then,â Erik whispered in return.
Cécile tried to stop her ever-growing smile, but failed when Halldór tugged at her skirt and begged her to help him find the chocolate chips.
âWe're trying to be healthy,â Erik muttered, but his words fell on deaf ears.
âChocolate, chocolate, chocolate cookies for us all,â HalldĂłr and CĂ©cile singsonged and grinned at him.
âYou are both getting nothing but salad for the next week!â Erik grumbled and crossed his arms, trying to glare but looking anything but frightening in his apron.
âLittle dancers need chocolate to live,â CĂ©cile winked at him as she helped HalldĂłr pour a bag of chocolate chips into the cookie batter.
âWell if that's the case then tired fathers need coffee,â Erik grumbled.
âExcellent idea,â CĂ©cile smiled. âVisiting girlfriends won't mind some either,â
âYeah, yeah,â Erik waved lazily. âI'll get to it,â
âYou've got him well trained,â CĂ©cile whispered to HalldĂłr â just loud enough for Erik to hear.
âWho? Mt. Puffin?â HalldĂłr looked at her questioningly as he pointed to his stuffed toy that was covered in flour.
âMhm. Him too,â CĂ©cile giggled.
âMr. Puffin made it snow,â HalldĂłr explained.
âDid he now?â CĂ©cile glanced at Erik, who muttered something about kids and flour bags being a bad combination.
âYes. Like this,â HalldĂłr grabbed a handful of flour and tossed in the air before CĂ©cile could stop him â giggling as it rained down over them both.
Cécile frowned, glad she wasn't wearing anything dry-clean only as Halldór proceeded to do it again.
She should know better, but thanked Erik as he handed her a spare apron.
âDeath before Decaf?â CĂ©cile read the text and glanced at Erik.
âGift from my brothers, before Natalia made us these ones,â Erik smiled and pointed to the purple aprons he and HalldĂłr were wearing.
âHow fitting...â CĂ©cile snickered and tied it around her waist, knowing it wouldn't be long until HalldĂłr found another way to cover her clothes in flour.
By the time the cookies were in the oven and Erik had made them coffee, both her and Erik sported hair almost as white as HalldĂłr's.
The whole kitchen appeared to have had a snow storm rush through it, and while Erik tried to sweep and hoover it all up, Cécile got tasked with trying to contain Halldór's flour-covered body within the kitchen.
âAh, ah, ah!â she tutted at HalldĂłr when he tried run past her. âYou're going nowhere but the bathtub looking like that,â
âI need to hoover him too,â Erik laughed and watched at HalldĂłr's struggling just covered CĂ©cile in more flour, the apron to real use to her any more.
âHoover us all,â CĂ©cile scoffed and tried to shake some of it off her long braid. âI can barely see anything! My glasses are covered too!â
âStand still,â Erik commanded and brushed them both over, pausing to wipe CĂ©cile's glasses very carefully for her before placing them back on her face â smiling fondly at her.
âThank you,â CĂ©cile sighed.
âSnow!â HalldĂłr laughed happily.
âIt's off to the bath with you,â Erik laughed once he'd gotten most of the flour off himself as well. âYou need to be hosed down a little.â
âCĂ©cile is going to bathe too?â HalldĂłr asked and smiled hopefully.
âNo,â CĂ©cile shook her head and hoped neither of them noticed her blushing.
âCĂ©cile can shower once you're all done hogging the bathtub,â Erik explained.
âBut you bathe with me... why not CĂ©cile?â HalldĂłr pouted.
âBecause, uh,â Erik cleared his throat. âCĂ©cile isn't very fond of...â he trailed of and glanced at CĂ©cile for help.
âI'm not too fond of sharing baths,â CĂ©cile lied.
âBut if I don't bring any toys in the bath?â HalldĂłr asked and looked a little upset.
âThen your rubber duck and boats will be very sad,â Erik replied.
âOh... Okay,â HalldĂłr sighed dramatically. âCan you sing me a good night song then?â he asked CĂ©cile.
âYes, of course,â CĂ©cile smiled and kissed his forehead.
HalldĂłr smiled brightly at that, and didn't fuss about having to be scrubbed clean of flour and cookie dough at all.
There was no need to dress nicely around a child, because no matter what she wore HalldĂłr would find a way to ruin it.
First with food and then with water.
He eagerly wanted to show her his collection of toy boats, and halfway through an elaborate story about how the miniature race-boat and cruise-ship were actually a modern Viking ship HalldĂłr demonstrated the 'Viking' ships immense 'powers' by throwing them into the air â giggling as it splashed the both of them as the toys hit the water.
âYou knew this would happen,â CĂ©cile shot Erik a nasty look â but Erik just laughed, standing safely in the doorway as HalldĂłr proceeded to splash more water over CĂ©cile.
Erik had to help her dry HalldĂłr â because he kept trying to slip away and run naked down the hallway.
âTroll-children don't get cookies,â Erik warned, and CĂ©cile could only laugh at how quickly HalldĂłr turned and let himself be both dried and changed into pyjamas.
Three cookies and a glass of milk after the bath was all the bribery he needed before he almost skipped off to bed with Cécile in tow.
âWhat lullaby would you like?â she asked him.
âAny!â HalldĂłr giggled and wriggled happily under the covers.
CĂ©cile hummed thoughtfully for a moment before settling for one her own mother had sung to her â hoping HalldĂłr didn't mind being sung to in French.
To her delight he appeared to love it â if falling asleep with a smile on his face counted as love.
Cécile decided to interpret it as such anyway.
A happy HalldĂłr was a good HalldĂłr after all.
