I hate the use of the word "defect" to describe someone with a birth abnormality. When a toy is defective, you send it back. Nobody wants a defective toy. Kids with birth abnormalities are often plagued with a feeling of inadequacy and self doubt, I know this first hand. There's nothing wrong with someone who looks different or maybe functions a little differently than somebody else. So why do we label these people defective? Just one word can make ALL the difference.
