Meet ABIGAIL ALCOTT. They are THIRTY-NINE years old and hail from CHARLESTON, SC. Abigail embodies the constellation, NORMA. They use she/her pronouns. Their faceclaim is ANNA KENDRICK.

Norma reminds me of a bubbling cauldron, ripped jeans & a flannel, quick-witted remarks, whispered deals, crying into your pillow at 3am, all day movie marathons, possessiveness, vacations to the family lake house, combat boots, dave matthews band, scarring on her hands, swimming to unwind after a long day, rain pelting against the roof, too many plants, shots of whiskey. .

BIOGRAPHY

(trigger warning: death, brief mention of struggles with infertility, drugs.)

For a witch, Abigail had an average, non-magical upbringing… likely because neither of her parents were witches. There was, of course, a great deal of shock and confusion when they came to find that she was inexplicably aging slower than all of the other kids in her class and could make a pot of water boil faster just by sheer will, but there wasn’t any kind of ill-will towards her or her sibling for it. In fact, her parents handled it very well, always ensuring that she felt loved and protected and trying to find the training she might need to harness her seemingly uncontrollable magical inclinations.

When she was ten, her parents divorced. Their separation wasn’t rooted in anything malicious, but rather a result of her dad being married to his career and her mother being tired of it. The reason didn’t really matter. An already emotional child, this sent Abigail into a state of turmoil, devastated by the breakup of her perfect familial unit and the sudden restriction that she could only see her father on the weekends. When her dad remarried and had another kid, though, she was set on an entirely new path–jealous, petty, destructive, and just an overall handful. Although her father had tried to maintain a connection at first, over time, his new family took precedent; whether that was a result of Abigail’s emotional responses or his own natural shift of priorities, she’ll never know. But weekend visits became rare, and Abigail got tired, and eventually she just became jaded and bitter about the whole thing.

Her tumultuous teenage years did bring about something positive, though–her sponsorship by Norma. Sure, Norma wasn’t known for choosing the most stable of witches, and it could have easily been seen as an affront, but for as little as she knew about the magical community, Abigail knew that this meant she was special. When she learned about Polaris at 23, there was no question in her mind that this is where she wanted to be. Although powerful, she quickly discovered that, as a water element, she was unstable; the more frustrated she got, the less control she had. And while Abigail actively did try and control herself, she found she preferred magic that she could control, such as herbalism and potions. In both respects, she was a natural, though rather average in every other discipline.

It was at Polaris where she met Daniel, and over the course of their schooling, they fell in love. They left the school shortly after their engagement, both feeling as though they were ready to start their lives. They got married, settled down, and while their marriage was good, they struggled with trying to conceive. For years, they tried doctors, potions, herbs–anything they could get their hands on. They weren’t really interested in leading any grandiose lives, but rather one full of love and comfort. As Abigail became more emotional about not being able to have kids, it put a larger strain on their marriage, which just led to her being more desperate to conceive, which put them in more debt, which caused more problems, and, well–they were in love, but toward the end, things were rocky. Abigail was devastated when Daniel passed away young as a result of a freak accident, and true to her history of not being able to control her emotions, Abigail spiraled.

A year after his death, Abigail was alone, a wreck, and broke. That’s when The Tether was able to convince her to come back to Polaris, to give her a place to live, a fresh start, and something to drag her back out of her mind. With no hope of being able to control her emotions, Abi threw herself back into Potions & Herbalism to keep herself calm. She still needed to pay for Polaris and her debt, so she began to grow special herbs and brew more complex, illegal potions to sell to a group of her trusted friends. This has since grown, and Abigail’s sense of self worth is now rooted in this little risky business she has for herself–she’s not sure if she’d get kicked out of Polaris if anything ever came to light, but it’s a risk.

To know Abigail is… not a bad experience, really. It’s not as though she breaks down every hour of the day. In fact, she can be good company–she’s quick-witted and her humor is dry, and she’s not necessarily drowning everyone around her in negativity. But to be loved by her? That’s more complex. She’s been abandoned before in many different respects, so she’s easily jealous and possessive of those who are in her inner circle. She also has a habit of putting herself in risky situations (she has a striking lack of self preservation), so she needs some protecting from herself as well, which is a burden that’s put on her loved ones. She’d go to bat for all of them, is even a pleasure to be around, but she demands a lot of emotional energy, to say the least

INCLINATION

Norma is a water elemental who is drawn to the moon. Norma is volatile, prone to jealousy, and their abilities can turn from boiling water to freezing snow in a split second. Norma selects those who have a tether, or someone who keeps them grounded in their emotions, so that they can stay stable. Typically, Norma is powerful, but not very reliable.

The Tether: Norma only sponsors someone who has a person in their life that can help keep them grounded, and this is, in a twisted way, that person for Abigail. This is also her dead husband’s best friend (or brother, if u wanna get more dramatic with it, whatever), which makes things more complicated. Regardless of the exact nature of it, these two have a co-dependent, somewhat unhealthy relationship. He’s her business partner in crime, her best friend, and the only other person in the world who is dealing with the same thing she is, yet a constant reminder of what they’ve both lost–a bad tether to have in the long run, but Abigail will take what she can get.

Half-Sibling: (Must be 9+ years younger than Abi.) This was a person that Abigail struggled with a lot growing up; when her dad remarried and had another kid, Abi was extremely jealous and likely acted out a lot as a result. Therefore, these two did not have the greatest relationship growing up. Maybe they’re doing okay now, or maybe there’s still a lot of tension, but regardless, they have a mixed past.

Clients: She’s selling drugs and brewing complicated potions for cash–she has a loyal clientele. Maybe they want something to help them unwind after a long day, or maybe they commission her for something with a little bit more of a kick. Frankly, Abigail doesn’t care as long as they keep quiet and pay her on time.

Rival: Pretty simple. Someone who is, at least to some degree, in the business of selling to Polaris & The Village. Abigail is stepping on their toes in a big way, and it could get ugly.

Best Friend: Aside from The Tether, this is one person who can put up with Abigail’s emotional, unstable demeanor–and, in return, Abi tries to keep her shit together for them. This person helps keep her calm and, for that, she loves them deeply.
